West Palm Beach, Florida Hosts Outdoor Movies by Moonlight
por Nicholas Bazanov
Like the proverbial 5-cent cigar, the $5 movie night is a distant memory, except at the Kravis Center. Eager to offer something for everyone, the performing arts center in West Palm Beach has come up with a new series of outdoor movies: family-friendly films with a wallet-pleasing admission of $5.
If that were not bargain enough, every ticket buyer gets a complimentary bag of popcorn.
Called Movies by Moonlight, the program unspools 11 classic musicals, comedies and dramas at the Kravis' outdoor Gosman Amphitheatre, beginning Saturday with the 1950s high school songfest Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
The outdoor movie series is the brainchild of senior director of programming Lee Bell, who was looking for an affordable attraction for the center's outdoor venue. The task of choosing the movies fell to Gin Blische, Kravis programming associate.
Lee was really, really looking for something especially in these hard economic times that would appeal to families, Blische said. It's not just going to see a movie, it's a big community experience.
Movies by Moonlight is a casual, low-budget way for the center to reach out to those who have not attended the Kravis. Still, Blische rejects the suggestion that the series is a loss leader. It's never a loss for the Kravis if we're bringing in a new audience. I don't see any risk involved.
Blische's mission was to select films that would appeal to young and old, tell a good story and deserve to be seen on a big screen.
Grease fit all the criteria, according to Blische. That movie just struck me as this colorful ball of music and fun and the characters are just so much fun to relate to, she said. Everybody knows the songs to it and it's popular on Broadway again, so we thought it was a good kickoff to the season.
It will be followed by Monster House (Oct. 25); Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Nov. 15); Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Dec. 6); and Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Dec. 20).
After the first of the year, Movies by Moonlight continues with Funny Girl (Jan. 10); Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Jan. 31); The Sound of Music (Feb. 21); The Princess Bride (March 7); Singin' in the Rain (March 28); and Apollo 13 (April 18).
The Gosman Amphitheatre holds 1,400 people, 600 of those on permanent bleacher seats.
