Upper Arlington, Ohio: 'Movie in the Park' Outdoor Cinema Series Features Kayaking Documentaries
por Michael Maltsev
Water-sports enthusiasts needn't take a kayak to Upper Arlington on Friday. A blanket will do just fine at the "Movies in the Park" outdoor cinema series. The "Movie in the Park" series will show the Reel Paddling Film Festival under the stars at Thompson Park, off McCoy Road. The paddling films, along with the other films in the outdoor film series, will be shown on an inflatable screen.
The collection of six short films -- including footage of sea and white-water kayaking and canoeing plus documentaries shot worldwide -- will make its lone Ohio stop on a 75-city tour of North America.
"We have a lot of films from Europe and Australia as well as the United States and Canada," festival coordinator Russ Schroeder said. "They show the spectrum of what you can do on water. You don't have to be a crazy kayaker going down a 100-foot waterfall."
One 20-minute film documents a marathon canoe race in which apparently pain-loving competitors engage in "15 hours of nonstop paddling."
The most strenuous activity surrounding the 24-foot inflatable screen will probably be Hacky Sack.
"Movie in the Park," through Sept. 4, will include screenings of Kung Fu Panda (June 19), The Express (July 10) and Iron Man (July 16).
The outdoor films will start at sundown, with free admission. Any movie postponed by rain will be shown the next evening.
