San Angelo, Texas: Classic War Movies Shown Outside in Downtown San Angelo

No, the Texas Theatre hasn't reopened, but the big movie screen will flicker nearby with stars such as John Wayne, Cary Grant and Gary Cooper.
Three war classics will be shown on a portable movie screen in a parking lot on East Twohig Avenue south of the Cactus Hotel as part of a local Tribute to our Military.
The movies feature soldiers in World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War.
In picking the movies, we chose films that weren't filled with terrible, graphic violence and language, said Rick Whitworth, manager of radio station KCSA 95.7 FM. They are more centered around family entertainment.
The movies include:
8:30 p.m. Friday Sergeant York (1941), starring Gary Cooper.
8:30 p.m. Saturday Operation Petticoat (1959), starring Cary Grant.
8:30 p.m. Sunday The Green Berets (1968), starring John Wayne.
The event is organized by KCSA, Downtown San Angelo Inc. and the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council.
It's an idea that has been in the works for several years, Whitworth said. It's something to give back to the community.
Organizers will give away free popcorn. Soft drinks and hotdogs will be available for purchase. No alcohol is allowed.
Before tonight's movie, the Cactus Hotel and the Mesquite Bean Cafe will be serving SOS, a meal consisting of creamed chipped beef served on toast. The meal is free to veterans.
Del Velasquez, executive director of Downtown San Angelo Inc., said the event is a chance to honor the military while getting reaquainted with downtown.
It will draw people downtown to entertain them while educating them about what's going on downtown.
What: Tribute to the Military outdoor movies. Three war classics will be shown this Memorial Day weekend.
When: 8:30 p.m. each night.
Where: Empty parking lot on East Twohig Avenue, south of the Cactus Hotel.
What else: Bring your own seating. The movie and popcorn are free.
