Huntsville Texas: Outdoor Movies Featured at Winter Celebration in Huntsville, Texas
por Caleb Mitchell
The second annual Winter in the Park event, sponsored by the City of Huntsville recreation services department, will be held Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. in the Eastham-Thomason Park. The first part of the event will include several activity booths, holiday treats and photo opportunities, followed by a chance for attendants to bundle up and watch a short outdoor movie.
We're going to show a 30-minute movie on this giant outdoor blow-up screen we have from a previous movie marathon, said Megan Bryant, City of Huntsville recreation department intern. Everyone should definitely bring blankets, chairs and coats for that part of the event, because we will be outside, and they will need them.
Around the winter time, there really aren't that many public events that bring the community together to celebrate the holidays, Bryant said . This is just a chance for community members and families to come together and enjoy some holiday activities.
Last year, we had the event dispersed over different locations and times, and this one is different in the fact that it's focused on one day at Eastham-Thomason Park.
From 3 p.m. through 5:30 p.m., the recreation services department will provide several booths where attendants can decorate cookies, take pictures with Santa or participate in other holiday traditions.
Starting at 3 p.m., we'll have a station system set up where we'll have cookie decoration, tree decorating, pictures with Santa and a lot of winter-themed races, Bryant said. We'll have things like Santa bag races, wheelbarrow races with antlers and other activities.
We'll also have a man doing balloon art, a moon walk, a candy counting contest and refreshments and snacks on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Wynne Home will be sponsoring Art in the Park, a chance for people to make clay ornaments, picture frames and candles, Bryant said. Also, the Boys and Girls Club of Walker County will be doing games of Christmas bingo and basketball with the elves as well as serving hot chocolate.
At 6 p.m., or whenever it is adequately dark, Bryant said a special Christmas outdoor movie will be shown.
The Winter in the Park event is free to the public and there will be door prizes.
