Valletta, Malta: Kinemastik International Short Film Festival Features Open Air Cinema Screenings
Kinemastik International Short Film Festival will enter into it's fifth year running this year in Valletta, Malta. The film festival is an important cultural event for the nation, as well as a fun community celebration. The festival is held over several days in July at various venues around Malta and Gozo. The highlight of the festival is the Westside Selekt weekend, open air cinema screenings held at the spectacular Gnien Il-Gardjola, a ravelin within the Valletta bastions overlooking the Grand Harbour. The venue has a 1,000-person capacity.
The festival began in 2005 as a simple al fresco film screening, and has grown in popularity ever since. There are three components of the program. The first features all-Maltese films and is called It-Talkies. The second section features more-traditional film festival fare, with local and international directors submitting films. Finally, a third venue will screen cult classics to appeal to a wider audience. But the outdoor movie screenings are still the main focus of the festival, true to it's roots.
