Staten Island, New York: Outdoor Movies at the Drive-In Recreated With an Inflatable Screen in Staten Island

Photo Credit: AWE -Bill Lyons. Need family entertainment with some heavy bang for no buck? Or maybe just a little nostalgic heavy petting? Either way, this annual outdoor film series, sponsored by Sen. Diane J. Savino and Richmond County Savings Foundation, runs weekends throughout June on a massive inflatable screen in the parking lot of Richmond County Bank Ballpark at 75 Richmond Terr., St. George. The outdoor movie screenings are free, but reservations (and a car) are required. Food will also be available for purchase. JUNE 11 8:30 p.m. "Moulin Rouge" (2001) -- A Brit poet (Ewan McGregor) falls for the beautiful nightclub headliner/courtesan (Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman), whom a jealous duke covets. Director Baz Luhrman's visually stunning musical is set during the Bohemian revolution in Paris, circa 1899, but features loads of 20th-century pop jams (everything from David Bowie to Nirvana to Elton John). Rated PG-13 for light sexual situations. 127 min. JUNE 12 8:30 p.m. "Happy Feet" (2006) -- Into the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song, is born a penguin who cannot sing. But he can tap dance something fierce! This animated hit features the voices of Hugh Jackman, Robin Williams and many more. Rated PG for mild peril. 109 min. JUNE 13 8:30 p.m. "Grease" (1978) -- Good girl Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and greaser Danny (John Travolta) fell in love over the summer. But when they unexpectedly discover they now attend the same high school, will these kids from opposite sides of the track rekindle their romance? This adaptation of the Broadway hit features enough audience sing-alongs ("Summer Lovin'," "There are Worse Things I Could Do," the title track) to pack a karaoke catalogue. Rated PG for mild language. 110 min. Midnight, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975) -- Leave the kids at home for this good-naturedly kinky cult classic about newly engaged Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon), who breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of "Sweet Transvestite" Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). Rated R for language and sexual themes. 98 min. JUNE 14 8:30 p.m. "Mamma Mia!" (2008) -- Not even the subpar singing of Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep can sink this infectious schlockfest about a bride-to-be trying to find her real father told using hit songs by the popular '70s group ABBA. Rated PG-13 for sex-related comments. 108 min. More information: 718-273-6369; DowntownSI.com.
