Riverfront Plaza Becomes Jacksonville's Open-Air Cinema, Hosts 'Movies in the Park' Series

Jacksonville’s Riverfront Plaza recently did that delightful civic trick where it becomes, for one evening, a place where strangers sit together in the dark and agree—quietly, reverently—not to talk through the movie. January’s “Movies in the Park” drew a crowd for an under-the-stars screening that mixed the magic of cinema with the simple joy of being outdoors with other humans who, at least for a couple of hours, aren’t yelling into their phones.

Afterwards, City of Jacksonville, Florida - Government popped onto social media to thank everyone for coming and made the sort of honest admission city governments almost never make: that the Downtown river views might have been “a little distracting” from the film—which is municipal-speak for We’ve accidentally built a pretty great backdrop and now it’s showing off again.

The “Movies in the Park” series is a cherished, free monthly event, inviting the community to watch crowd-pleasing films against Jacksonville’s riverfront scenery. And February gets two nights, because apparently one helping of wholesome outdoor togetherness isn’t enough for a modern calendar.

Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Feb 13 (Riverfront Plaza): The Princess Bride — romance, swordplay, and the comforting knowledge that true love is real, even if your hands are freezing.

  • Feb 20 (Artist Square): Artist Square hosts Remember the Titans — an inspiring, big-hearted film about teamwork, unity, and the kind of triumph-over-adversity arc that makes you sit up straighter without quite knowing why.

More than anything, it’s a series built to do what cities do at their best: give people a reason to gather, exhale, and share an experience that isn’t a meeting, an errand, or a password reset. If you missed January—or you just enjoy the rare pleasure of communal movie-watching under an open sky—consider this your gentle nudge to mark the dates. The city’s message boiled down to the simplest invitation imaginable: come to the next one.
