Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Claro Cine Screens Outdoor Movies in Rio de Janeiro

Outdoor Movies in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Swiss outdoor cinema company Cinerent OpenAir AG brought its annual open-air cinema concept to Rio de Janeiro for the 2008 edition of Claro Cine — 18 evenings of outdoor film premieres from November 19 through December 7 at the Jockey Club in Gávea, a neighbourhood in Rio’s south zone near the Botanical Gardens and the beaches of Leblon and Ipanema. Around 1,400 visitors were expected each evening.

The programme included Hollywood blockbusters and Brazilian features, among them seven exclusive Brazilian previews: Burn After Reading by the Coen Brothers and Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies were among the headliners. An additional 1,500 m² tent and stage hosted newcomer bands from different Brazilian regions, including Nação Zumbi, Moptop, and Canastra.

The 300 m² screen was the same structure used each Swiss summer at the Grosse Schanze in Berne, shipped to Brazil in three 40-foot containers totalling 40 tons of equipment. Local organisation was handled by Day 1 Entertainment, a Sony Music affiliate that had staged the Swiss concept in Brazil in 2002, 2004, and 2005. Title sponsor was the telecom company Claro; main sponsor was the bank Bradesco. The event was held under the patronage of Brazil’s Ministry of Culture.
