Outdoor Movie Series at the University of Nevada, Reno

Outdoor Movies in Reno, NevadaThe Movies on the Lawn series will continue to show outdoor movies this fall at the University of Nevada, Reno with blockbusters such as The Dark Knight and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The series will shift from Tuesday nights (as it was in the summer) to Thursday nights at 9 p.m. The outdoor movies will continue to be shown on a large inflatable screen outside the Joe Crowley Student Union. Once it gets too cold, it will move into the student union theater on the third floor. I think we're going to get a great turnout, said Casey Stiteler, who helps coordinate the movie series. It's going to continue to grow. Everything will remain free for students. This includes cotton candy, popcorn, drinks and the movie itself. They (students) have something that's fun and free for them to do on campus, Stiteler said. It's something that they can do that's not going to get them in trouble, that's in a safe area (and) that they don't have to pay for. We're all starving college students. Movies that have yet to be released on DVD will continue to be shown, which ASUN purchases the rights to play for just one night. The movies were also chosen by students in a survey conducted by Flipside Chairperson Caitlin Gunn. We want to show movies that students want and we know we're doing that if there are a lot of people there, Stiteler said. We want to serve as many students as possible. If they're there, then we know we're doing something right. Over the summer, some outdoor movies had more than 150 students in attendance. That number is expected to increase this semester, especially when The Dark Knight is shown. Flipside usually picks good movies that everyone enjoys, said Christine Grieve, a 21-year-old International Affairs/Spanish major from Las Vegas. It's a great way to hang out with friends without breaking the bank. Plus, watching a movie outside lying on a blanket is just so much more relaxing than an uncomfortable fold out chair. The movie series has potential to expand beyond one day a week. ASUN President Eli Reily said he hopes the series will become more than once a week and include a night dedicated to less mainstream, independent films. There are a lot of great independent movies that come out that no one really sees that are fantastic, Reily said. (We want) to always cater to the largest array of students possible. That means showing those bigger movies, but also those other movies that people want to see but we just haven't provided it for them. The movie series will be every Thursday, other than a few exceptions like Welcome Week and finals week. For scheduling updates on the movie series, visit www.asun.unr.edu.
