Outdoor Movies in Oakland, California

The Old Oakland Outdoor Cinema screened Kevin Costner’s 1989 baseball classic Field of Dreams at dusk — around 8:45 p.m. — on Washington Street between Ninth and 10th Streets. Admission was free. Street lamps were covered to improve visibility. The programme was preceded by a 17-minute short and a 3½-minute compilation of scenes from films shot in Oakland. Festivities began at 5 p.m. with a jazz combo, and every attendee received a free raffle ticket redeemable for prizes from neighbourhood restaurants, haircut vouchers, T-shirts, and retailer coupons. Free parking was available after 5 p.m. at Eighth and Washington streets.

The previous week’s screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark drew nearly 400 people. The series continued with Tootsie and a drag contest, and closed with Singin’ in the Rain.
