Montalbán Theatre Rooftop Screening
La La Land Under the Stars
Come spend an evening on a rooftop watching La La Land the way it was surely meant to be seen: outdoors, under the Hollywood night sky, with the city twinkling below you like it’s trying very hard to be romantic on command.
Doors open at 5:00 PM, which gives you time to admire the views, take a few photos you will never look at again, and locate a seat before the collective human instinct to “just stand right here” kicks in. The film starts promptly at 7:00 PM, which is event-speak for: we will begin with or without your dramatic entrance.
Between 5:00–6:00 PM there’s Happy Hour featuring buy one, get one free beer and wine—a gracious arrangement that acknowledges two important truths: (1) love stories are best enjoyed with a drink, and (2) Los Angeles is much easier to adore when it comes with a discount.
This screening also marks the film’s 10-year anniversary on the rooftop, which is both delightful and faintly alarming if you remember thinking “La La Land just came out.” Time, as ever, is a ruthless pickpocket.
Whether you’re revisiting the movie or seeing it for the first time, this is essentially the ideal date night: music, romance, a skyline, and the comforting knowledge that if you say something awkward you can always pretend you were just quoting the film.
Need-to-know (the part where magic meets policies)
-
Seating: First come, first served (so arrive early if you’re attached to having a backrest and a sense of control).
-
Outside food/drink: Not allowed. (The rooftop is a benevolent kingdom with borders.)
-
Tickets: Non-refundable.
-
Weather issues: If canceled/rescheduled due to bad weather, you’ll be offered credit toward a future screening.
-
Be decent: Respect the venue and each other—always a good rule, but especially in close proximity to popcorn and romance.
-
Preservation fee: A $3 fee is added to each ticket by The Montalbán Company to help preserve the The Ricardo Montalbán Theatre.
-
Accessibility note: No elevators on premises. (Hollywood glamour, like much of life, involves stairs.)
Get your tickets and make a night of it—ideally one you remember fondly, even if you later discover you’ve been humming the soundtrack in the grocery store for three straight weeks.
