Locarno, Switzerland: Open Air Cinema Screenings at the Locarno Film Festival

The festival has become world-renowned for its exhibition of artistic and independent films, and for it's outdoor film screenings in Europe's largest open air cinema. Throughout it's 62 year history, the open air cinema has been the host to over 8,000 movie-goers, filmmakers, and critics to see radical films screened under the stars. The extraordinary setting of the Piazza Grande is a celebratory and magical occasion for all audiences. The Locarno Film Fest is not unlike other festivals worldwide that are feeling the pinch of the fiscal crisis. However, Locarno festival organizers are not worried about the festival's future; in fact, they are encouraged by the ingenuity and creativity that arises through fiscal crisis. "I haven't come across a crisis; I've seen a wide range of really interesting and inventive productions -- in both narrative and stylistic terms -- from all corners of the indie world," said artistic topper Frederic Maire. This year's outdoor cinema lineup includes popular titles such as "(500) Days of Summer", as well as international indie fare including a Cape Town-set drama "Shirley Adams," by first-timer Oliver Hermanus, about a mother struggling to care for her disabled son. Fest will also witness the return of Greek cinema with a comedy, "Akadimia Platonos," by Berlin-based Greek helmer Filippos Tsitos ("My Sweet Home"), and will see hot Blighty-based Chinese director-novelist Xiaolu Guo with "She, a Chinese." Film enthusiasts and filmmakers alike love Locarno for it's unique choice in film fare as well as it's world-famous outdoor movie screenings, and this year will be nothing less than than the pinnacle of their achievements, despite budget-tightening.
