Liverpool, UK: Shakespeare Outdoor Movie Festival

The 2008 Liverpool Shakespeare Festival followed its Globe production of A Winter's Tale with three nights of outdoor movies in the gardens of Liverpool Cathedral, each film connected to Shakespeare in its own way.

Shakespeare in Love opened the run -- a romantic comedy starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow that takes liberties with history but delivers wit and charm. Al Pacino's Looking for Richard followed on Friday, a documentary exploration of why Shakespeare's Richard III still resonates with modern audiences. The festival closed Saturday with Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, which relocated the play to a gun-toting modern city and brought the story to a new generation.

Screenings ran August 7-9 at Liverpool Cathedral, 20 Saint James Road. Tickets were £6 / £4. Tel: 0151 727 1703.
