La Quinta, California: La Quinta Offers Open Air Cinema Summer Program
The city's Community Service Department kicked off its summer programs June 1 offering activities for all ages that are fun, economical and educational. The city staff is very cognizant of keeping the price of programs reasonable, said Community Services Director Edie Hylton. We have numerous programs for people to consider and have a staycation.
And even for those that itch to get out of town once in a while, the city offers super saver excursions that are great ways to enjoy the summer and watch your pocketbook, Hylton said.
The activities are listed in the city's summer brochure and include the following:
- Excursion: Temecula Valley Tour 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., June 27 Cost is $29, which covers transportation but excludes tastings and tours at the wineries. Residents 21 years or older may attend. Registration deadline is Friday.
- Excursion: San Clemente Ocean Festival 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 18 Cost is $29, which includes transportation. All ages are invited. Registration deadline is July 2.
- Excursion: Long Beach Tiki Festival & Polynesian Spectacular 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 22 Cost is $29, which includes transportation. All ages are invited. Registration deadline is Aug. 7.
- Open Air Cinema The free event features movies on a 20-foot inflatable screen in Old Town La Quinta, 78-100 Main Street Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is set to show at 8 p.m. Friday. Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius is scheduled for 8 p.m. July 10.
- 5-on-5 Adult Basketball League Registration begins June 26 for the league, which starts July 11 at the President Gerald R. Ford Boys & Girls Club gymnasium, 49-995 Park Avenue. Cost is $100 per team plus a $50 forfeit deposit.
- Fritz Burns Pool Summer Swim Program Lessons that range from parent-child sessions for children as young as 6 months to competitive training. Lesson times vary and are available from Monday to June 26; June 29 to July 10; July 13 to July 24; July 27 to Aug. 7; and Aug. 10 to Aug. 21. Cost is $55 for YMCA members or $65 for non-members.
