Another signature event in the Jewel has been saved as La Jolla Parks and Rec, Inc. anteed up $2,500 last week to bring Movies By the Sea back - but this year, it will be one movie, not two.
Recently, the recreation council had announced that the popular family-oriented summer movie series was being canceled because it did not receive $7,000 in grant funding from county Supervisor Pam Slater-Price.
Until this year, an out-of-town entertainment company with a large inflatable screen had been paid to screen two movies during Fridays in August outdoors at Scripps Park.
Parks board Treasurer Hobe Schroeder said a local company stepped in to save the event at the last minute. It will be held on Aug. 21.
"I got a phone call from a guy asking how much we paid for movies," Schroeder said. "I said roughly $9,000 for two movies. He said, 'I can do it for less than half of that.' "
Schroeder identified the company as CommCinema, which does outdoor movie screenings throughout San Diego. He added that renting the projector screen for one night will cost $1,400. The remaining $1,100 will go to pay associated expenses such as hiring a live band to perform before the film, a clown to entertain children and do face painting, and other expenses.
"In the spirit of the community, we have to do something to save the movies," Schroeder said.
Parks board President Chip Rome agreed. "That's what we're here for," he said.
Schroeder said it hasn't been finalized, but the classic film "The Wizard of Oz" is the one they're trying to get for this year's outdoor screening.
