Killeen, Texas: Outdoor Movies in the Park ends with ‘Oz'

Killeen, Texas Outdoor MoviesIt's not a conventional movie theater because the screen is outdoors and the floors aren't sticky, but it's not a drive-in movie, either. Movies in Your Park, a free outdoor movie screening series, will show its final movie of the season, The Wizard of Oz, at 8 p.m. Friday at the softball field behind the Killeen Community Center. Movie-goers are urged to bring blankets or chairs. The series, which started at the end of June, featured Breakfast at Tiffany's, Bee Movie and Hitch. The movie series was created through a partnership between Killeen's Parks and Recreation Department and Time Warner Cable. Vickie Carpenter, public affairs manager for Time Warner's Central Texas branch, said that before the movie, people portraying characters from the movie will be available for photo opportunities. Face-painting artists will transform children into their favorite "Oz" characters and a moonbounce inflatable also will be available. Activities start at 7:30 p.m. Families are very important to Time Warner Cable, Carpenter said. Being able to watch family movies on the big screen is one great way to enjoy an evening of outdoor quality time with your family. With school about to start, fun family moments are especially important. Megian Douglass, Killeen's recreation superintendent, said families can bring their own refreshments. Chick-Fil-A, Mama Soul's Catering and Fuddruckers vendors will be available. Douglass said that this year's success ensures that the program will entertain movie-goers next year. For one outdoor movie showing in this year's series, we would have upwards of 500 people come out, Douglass said. The great crowds of people that have come are definitely an exciting thing. So we expect to have this series continue next year around June so that our families can continue to enjoy wholesome entertainment.
