Houma, Louisiana: Outdoor Movie Series Features 80's Classics in Houma, Louisiana

Outdoor Movies in Houma, LouisianaMake a break in your Friday night routine by catching a cool breeze and movie at the same time. Better yet, make it more fun and make it a retro night. It is "Back to the '80s" night as the Houma Regional Arts Council and Downtown Development Corporation begins the popular Outdoor Movie Series at twilight April 17 at Memorial Park in downtown Houma, with the movie "Sixteen Candles." "The Outdoor Movie Series was very popular last year," said Glenda Toups, executive director of the Houma Regional Arts Council. "We had a lot of requests to do different varieties of movies and we had a request to do something from the '80s. We decided to do 'Sixteen Candles,' and we wanted to see if we could make it an '80s night." "Sixteen Candles," released in 1984 and rated PG-13, stars Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall and Michael Schoeffling. Organizers said those who lived through those days will get a kick out of the snapshot in time. However, some things remain the same with the passage of time. Even today's teens could empathize with the main characters as they watch Samantha Baker's "sweet sixteen" birthday become anything but a special day as she suffers through every embarrassment possible from her friends and family. Organizers invite people to become part of the fun by wearing their leg warmers and acid-wash jeans or parachute pants. Bring your Madonna look or wear your Cyndi Lauper makeup and don't forget your Jellies. Men can sport their mullets and Wayfarers or come as a preppie or a geek. It is all set for fun. Remember excess was the key to the look. "We are encouraging everyone to come out because it is something different," Toups said. "It is a good chance to do something outdoors and a good way to support the downtown area. People bring out lawn chairs or just sit and picnic. Some people get takeout from the surrounding restaurants and sit in the amphitheater. We just want everyone to come out and have a good time." The Outdoor Movie Series presents movies on an 18-by-10-foot screen on the third Friday of month. The movies are presented in the Memorial Park amphitheater on Main Street, across Bayou Terrebonne from the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum, 7910 Park Ave. Parking is available in the museum's lot. In case of rain, the event will be canceled. The series will continue through the summer. The event is free and open to the public. "It (Movie Series) is something people don't do much anymore," said Chelsea Goddard, an Arts Council employee. "This is for families and young people - basically everybody getting together."
