Holmen, Wisconsin: Holmen Recreates Outdoor Movie Nights

The Holmen Area Historical Society is offering a chance to take a trip back in time to when free outdoor movies were shown in small communities all around the region.

The HAHS salute to free movies nights will be held Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Yahnke Antique Green, W6816 Village View Lane, Holmen.

Free outdoor movie nights were a tradition in many area communities, thanks to the late Dave Marck, who hosted the events for 44 years.

At 7:30 p.m. Jean Marck will give a brief talk on the history of outdoor movies. Beginning at 8 p.m. or as soon as it is dark, there will be a Woody Woodpecker cartoon followed by a 1940s newsreel. The outdoor movie feature, Road to Bali starring Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour, will follow.

Popcorn, cotton candy, Orange Crush, root beer and grape soda will be available for purchase.

In the spirit of the outdoor movie tradition, bring your own lawn chairs or blankets to sit on and mosquito repellent, said Marie Dummer, historical society president.

In case of rain, the outdoor movies will be shown indoors at the Antique Green.

Free parking with rides will be available from the parking area to the outdoor movie site.
