Guyra, Australia: Outdoor Movies on an Inflatable Screen Shown All Weekend in Guyra, Australia

Outdoor Movies in Guyra, Australia

Guyra movie buffs got their first chance at a hometown cinema night in years when the New England Credit Union (NECU) sponsored three free outdoor movie evenings at the Guyra Recreation Grounds (corner of Ollera and Ryanda Streets) to celebrate Australia Day. Screenings ran at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Mamma Mia on Saturday, Surf’s Up on Sunday, and Get Smart on Monday — all family-friendly. Patrons supplied their own chairs and rugs; food was on sale from several outlets on the grounds.

CEO Kevin Dupé explained the sponsorship:

“It wasn’t all that long ago that people used to go to drive-in movies because it was so family friendly. Outdoor movies on big screens are more common now in the big cities and should become very popular here in the summer, particularly for special community events like Australia Day and Guyra’s famous Lamb and Potato Festival. We are delighted to be the sponsors of the inaugural outdoor movies at Guyra and wish all the weekend celebrations in the town every success.”

The films were screened on a 7.5 m × 6.5 m inflatable screen. Guyra Council hoped the screenings would become an annual event.
