It's been a long time since Guyra movie buffs have been able to go to the cinema in their home town but it will be happening this weekend to celebrate Australia Day. The New England Credit Union (NECU) has provided $2,500 to sponsor three nights of outdoor movies at the Guyra Recreation grounds, at the corner of Ollera and Ryanda Streets, at 8 pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings.
Admission is free and the program includes Mamma Mia on Saturday, Surf's Up on Sunday and Get Smart on Monday and are all recommended for family viewing.
Patrons will need to take chairs and rugs but food will be for sale from a number of outlets on the grounds.
CEO Kevin DupГ© said NECU was pleased to respond to a request from Guyra Council to sponsor the event.
It wasn't all that long ago that people used to go to drive-in movies because it was so family friendly, he said.
Outdoor movies on big screens are more common now in the big cities and should become very popular here in the summer particularly for special community events like Australia Day and Guyra's famous Lamb and Potato Festival which coincide at the weekend.
We are delighted to be the sponsors of the inaugural outdoor movies at Guyra and wish all the weekend celebrations in the town every success.
The movies will be shown on a 7.5m x 6.5m inflatable screen and Guyra Council is hoping the screenings will become an annual event.
