Greenville, South Carolina: South Carolina Cities Offer Free Outdoor Movie Nights

The city of Greenville is offering an inexpensive night of family fun once a month this summer with its movie under the stars events. Beginning tonight with the animated film Cars and continuing every third Friday through August, the city will show a free family film on a giant screen at Boyd Lee Park.

The city was approached by Carolina Outdoor Cinema to hold the events, said Shana Kriewall, recreation superintendent for the city. She said the recreation and parks department could not afford to start a new program this year, so the company found sponsors for the events and they will be free to the city.

There will be concessions available or families can bring their own food and chairs to sit on the grass. We are very excited it is our first attempt to do this in Greenville, Kriewall said. The other films that will be shown have not been named. The town of Winterville hosts a similar program over the summer.

The Winterville program, now in its third year, shows six movies over the summer at alternating locations, Hillcrest Park and Winterville Recreation Park. The films for the Winterville events will be determined by a recreation board. Contact Josh Humphries can at jhumphries@coxnc.com or (252) 329-9565.
