Fontana, California: Dive-in Theater Features Outdoor Movies by the Pool
For people seeking great entertainment in Fontana Fontana, this has already been a summer to remember - and we still have another month to go.
Fontana's new Center Stage Theater opened to rave reviews last weekend (July 25-27), bringing a whole new level of prestige to the city and its downtown area.
Right behind Center Stage is the new Miller Park Amphitheater, a prime location for holding outdoor concerts. Hundreds of Fontanans have set up their lawn chairs on the grassy slope for the City of Fontana's Concert in the Park series on Thursday nights.
Another big attraction in Fontana has been the Dive-In Movie Night series at the Heritage Pool (see photo above). When I checked out this event on Friday, July 25, I was amazed at how successful the Dive-Ins have become.
The event, which offers lots of swimming enjoyment along with a family-oriented movie on a huge screen, officially begins at 6:30 p.m. But as I found out, you'd better get there very early and wait in a long line (which forms at 5 p.m.) or else you're out of luck.
Well, check that actually, you ARE in luck, because if you come back the following night (Saturday), the pool will be open once again and the same movie will be playing.
Yes, folks, this is the little secret of the Dive-Ins: They are so popular that the city is offering repeats every week, but the Saturday repeats aren't officially listed in the city's brochures or advertisements. I don't know why the city recreation people aren't publicizing this more; maybe they already have enough swimmers attending on both nights.
Whatever the case, the Friday Dive-Ins routinely sell out with 300-plus attendees, and hundreds more stop by on Saturdays.
If you want to join in the excitement, be there on Aug. 1-2 to see The Lion King, on Aug. 8-9 to see Mulan, and on Aug. 15-16 to see Happy Feet.
It's a great bargain; the cost is just $1.50 for children and $3 for adults. The pool is located at 7350 W. Liberty Parkway (south of Baseline Avenue) in northwestern Fontana.
