Tribeca Film Festival Brings Outdoor Movies to Doha, Qatar

The Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) and New York's Tribeca Film Festival announced a partnership to launch the Tribeca Film Festival Doha, with the inaugural event scheduled for November 10–14, 2009. The festival was set to take place at Doha's Museum of Islamic Art and in cinemas across the city, featuring approximately 40 films, outdoor screenings, and children's programs. The announcement was made by QMA Chairperson Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani and TFF co-founders Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff.

Modeled on the annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York — itself founded in 2001 in response to the September 11 attacks — the Doha edition was designed to showcase both Qatari culture and global filmmaking. “I invite film enthusiasts from every country to share their passion for this art by visiting the Tribeca Film Festival Doha,” said Her Excellency Sheikha Mayassa.
