There's no need to limit your moviegoing to the multiplex not when one historic theater is staying open late and a Chippewa Strip restaurant is showing movies under the stars. No, things are not the status quo when it comes to watching movies in the summer around here. Not only has the Hamburg Palace Theatre started a summer midnight movie series, but the Bacchus Wine Bar and Restaurant is again hosting weekly outdoor films with a touch of class.
Outdoor Movies Under the Stars
A recently remodeled patio is the new shine added this year to the annual outdoor movie series held Wednesday evenings through September at Bacchus (54 W. Chippewa St.). Guests can enjoy food, drink and al fresco movies by candlelight at tables dressed with linens, glassware and silver. A full dinner menu or simpler fare such as wine and cheese will be available.
Bacchus owner and chef Brian Mietus receives input from staff and customers before choosing the films. We look for a good diversity of comedies, classics, modern films and dramas, Mietus says.
Diverse definitely describes the movies in this series, everything from the classic Gregory Peck-Audrey Hepburn romance Roman Holiday, to Will Ferrell's comic foibles in Old School. Here's the schedule:
June: Chasing Amy, Wednesday; King Pin, June 17; Wall Street, June 24.
July: Rushmore, July 1; You Kill Me, July 8; True Romance, July 15; Happy Gilmore, July 22; and Grosse Pointe Blank, July 29.
August: Fargo, Aug. 5; The Departed, Aug. 12; Sex and the City, Aug. 19; and Old School, Aug. 26.
September: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Sept. 2; Star Wars, Sept. 9; Roman Holiday, Sept. 16; and Rudy, Sept. 23.
The Bacchus series, for guests 18 and over, is free. Movies begin at dusk, but won't be shown if it's raining. Be sure to make reservations so you'll have a seat. Call 854-9463.
