Basel, Switzerland: 'Art Basel' International Art Festival Features Outdoor Movies in an Open Air Cinema

Outdoor Movies in Basel, SwitzerlandThe world's premier international art show for Modern and contemporary works, Art Basel features nearly 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. More than 2,500 artists, ranging from the great masters of Modern art to the latest generation of emerging stars, are represented in the show's multiple sections. The exhibition includes the highest-quality paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned works. Art Basel was the first art show to create an ideal setting for films. Since 1999, a varied program of films by artists has been shown at the Stadtkino Basel (Klostergasse 5, entrance via garden of Kunsthalle Art Hall). It features films by internationally renowned artists as well as by young talents that the audience has not yet discovered. For Art 33 Basel, Art Film came up with a new addition. In the square outside the Stadtkino, an Open Air Cinema with 100 seats was set up, weather permiting, every evening from June 11 to 16 (except Saturday, when the ArtZappening culture festival takes place). These outdoor movies has become a trademark tradition for Art Basel. It shows various cinematic portraits of artists. For example, in his film "Pecker", John Waters tells the fictional story of a boy from Baltimore who takes up photography as a hobby, is then discovered by a gallery and - virtually against his will - makes a meteoric rise in the art scene. The American director Michael Hoobooms presents an impressive film on the life and death of the AIDS-sick performance artist Tom Chomont ("Tom"). On one evening, the two DJs clovis & ephemere presented their "Archivbeat" project. It combines cinematic material from past eras with modern rhythmical music and offers the audience a surprising and amazing visual and acoustical experience. The supporting program is an experimental film on the artist Laurie Anderson. This yearВґs program for "Art Film" includes films by successful artists such as Paul McCarthy, Pipilotti Rist, Roman Signer, Dan Graham and Г–yvind Fahlstöm. The younger generation of artists is represented by Doug Aitken, Brice Dellsperger, Angus Fairhurst, Emanuelle Antille, Hiroyuky Oki, Joshua Mosley, Marine Hugonnier and many others 60,000 people attended Art 39 Basel, the last edition of this favorite rendezvous for the global artworld, including art collectors, art dealers, artists, curators and other art enthusiasts. The New York Times has called Art Basel the В«Olympics of the Art World.В» Le Monde named Art Basel В«La meilleure foire du mondeВ» (В«The best fair in the worldВ»), and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung observed В«Die beste Kunst ist gerade gut genugВ» (В«The best art is barely good enoughВ»). Art 40 Basel takes place June 10 14, 2009.
