Top 25 Outdoor Movie: Crocodile Dundee
Crocodile Dundee is the next film on the Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time. This movie is a great pick for your next outdoor movie or backyard cinema screening, but before we get into any details, here’s the theatrical release trailer:
Crocodile Dundee begins with Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), a Newsweek reporter on the trail of the legendary man of the outback, Michael J. “Crocodile” Dundee (Paul Hogan). She has heard a number of fantastic stories about “Mick,” but soon finds that many of them are exaggerated tall tales.
Mick is nonetheless afforded several chances to show off his outback skills, and saves Sue from a close encounter with a crocodile. As she wraps up her story, she invites Mick back to New York City, and he decides to go with her.
He’s soon in a foreign landscape, and awkwardly (and comically) shows his naivete about modern life — asking his taxi driver what tribe he’s from and washing his clothes in a bath, among other hilarious moments.
The movie is a great comedy that will entertain the entire community while bringing back a bit of mid-80s nostalgia. The most important reason it deserves a spot on our Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time list is simply that it’s loved by so many people that it’s sure to be a success in every community.
In fact, the movie was made on a budget of under $10 million, meant only for Australian and American audiences, but it quickly became a worldwide phenomenon — and ultimately one of the highest-grossing films of 1986! Keep your audience in mind with Crocodile Dundee, though: it’s not for young children, and is rated PG-13 for some suggestive scenes and adult humor.
It would make a really great date-night or college film, or — depending on your community — a broader community screening, as long as families understand what their kids will be watching. All in all, Crocodile Dundee is a must for the perfect outdoor movie season.
