Los Angeles, California: New TeeVee Outdoor Movie Screenings on the Pier

The NewTeeVee Pier Screenings brought together online video creators and aficionados at Catchlight Studios in Los Angeles each summer, projecting user-submitted clips on a large outdoor screen with live judging and audience voting. The August 2008 theme was NON-HUMAN -- animation, puppets, animals, machinima, and other non-actor content. The live event ran 7--9:30 p.m.; top three audience-voted winners received G-Technology 320GB hard drives, with first place also receiving a 1TB drive and a free laptop engraving from Etchstar.

The series was a live test of how well online video survived the move from the PC to a large outdoor screen -- in 2008, a genuinely open question. Past themes included episodic content, parody, product placement, user-generated advertising, and citizen news.
