Open Air Cinema Brings Outdoor Movies to Burning Man

You can find anything and everything at Burning Man: glow in the dark banana cars, rolling brains, semi-truck art, and now inflatable movie screens. Yup. We did Burning Man this year, and it was — well, lets just say now we know that an Open Air screen can withstand anything Mother Nature can conjure up.

We hauled a 40-foot screen to the venue, a dry (and we mean DRY) riverbed over 100 miles from Reno, . And for good measure packed in a line array sound system just to be sure that Burners for miles around could hear us.

For two consecutive days the intense desert heat beat down on Open Air screen, with no ill-effect. That was easy. And then – out of nowhere – the duststorm, and accompanying 80 mph winds. Fortunately because the stakes had been pounded deep into the riverbed they did a great job of holding the screen in place until we could man the two back ropes. The screen simply folded in the middle making it much easier to hold down. We simply waited out the storm, and easily reinflated the screen with plenty of time for the next film screening. No damage done.

Open Air Cinema is looking forward to seeing what the ‘Man’ can throw our way next year.

Open Air Cinema Brings Outdoor Movies to the Hills of Rwanda

Open Air Cinema brings outdoor movies to RwandaSo there is no cinema in your neighborhood? No cinema in your city? Not even a cinema in your country? Well, that didn’t stop a group of young Rwandan filmmakers from screening their films in nearly every corner of their country.

With an inflatable movie screen from Open Air Cinema thousands of Rwandans have been able to enjoy a special new brand of cinema: Rwandan cinema. A wave of Rwandan films have been circling the world since Eric Kabera (a Rwandan native) produced a film entitled 100 days, a story about the years of genocide that plagued . That film heavily influenced a number of other movies including the award-winning Hotel . Rwandan cinema has been highly acclaimed in film festivals as prestigious as the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. But international success was not enough for Kabera, who felt that these films would have a much greater impact in rural Rwandan villages. Kabera immediately set up the Rwandan Film Center in the capital of Kigali as a space for young Rwandans to learn the skills needed to produce movies, films and documentaries about relating to Rwandan culture and history. Armed with a large inflatable movie screen from Open Air Cinema, the Rwandan Film Center has roamed through the hills of screening hundreds of films and movies, both foreign and domestic.

The lack of movie theaters in Rwanda has not at all hindered the growth of Rwandan cinema, with a portable compact cinema system, anybody anywhere can now enjoy the wonders of film!

Giant Outdoor Movie Screens in Peru, Illinois

Inflatable movie screen grows to 26 feet high, 40 feet long in about 12 minutes

Several cars slowed down Friday afternoon in Centennial Park to watch a giant black mass grow from the ground.

One moment it was just a flat piece of plastic. However, in just minutes – 12 minutes to be exact – a huge black and white screen dwarfing trees was standing erect.

The Parks and Recreation District rented the movie screen for a Friday showing of “Matilda.” Nearing dusk, families and even a few couples on dates brought lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the cool summer night at the screening, run by a local family-owned business.

“It’s cool. I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Mary Hammerich of Peru, who brought her 7-year-old daughter Taylor. “It’s just like years ago at the old drive-in.”

LaSalle-Peru residents Brian and Carrie Brown are fans of drive-in movies, too. They grew up when outdoor cinemas were popular. They now own Sunset Cinemas Inc., renting and operating inflatable movie screens, which bring the old drive-in movie atmosphere to any open area.

The Browns and their three children started in the movie business just about a year ago, and already it’s paying off.

“We’ve been booked solid,” Carrie Brown said, estimating the company will have done about 60 events by October.

She said the whole idea originated about 10 years ago when her husband, Brian, saw a group in Washington, D.C., enjoying an outdoor flick. Brian, an engineer, then started studying how it would be possible to bring that kind of entertainment on the road.

The couple then found a company in that sold the inflatable screens, and the Browns knew they had something special. They showed their first movie in April and have been busy ever since.

They have two screens. The super-screen, with a projection area 40 feet long and about 23 feet high, was used at Peru’s event. Carrie Brown said the screen is large enough for about 4,000 people to watch comfortably.

Though it looks massive, it can be deflated in seconds. Carrie Brown said that was one of the reasons they chose the screens.

“They’re very safe,” Carrie Brown said.

The other screen is 16 feet wide and about 9 feet tall and is usually used for schools and private or indoor functions.

Carrie Brown said she’s looked for other portable movie screen companies in the area but could only find one in southern and one in the Chicago suburbs.

The family travels all over the Midwest projecting movies for clients, mostly family-friendly pictures rated G, PG or PG-13. The movie choice is up to the client, but it must be licensed to be shown in a public place.

More information is available by calling (815) 224-2991 or visiting the Web site at www.moviesatsunset.com.

Carrie Brown said the experience is fun for the whole family, which rang true Friday night.

Peru resident Kathy Pyszka and her family were among the moviegoers, and she had only one regret.

“I’m just sorry they didn’t start this earlier in the summer,” said Kathy Pyszka.

Moorpark, California: Moorpark Hosts Outdoor Movies

Moorpark, California Hosts Outdoor Movies’s 25th anniversary celebration will continue this month with an outdoor movie event featuring the classic movie “WarGames” at Arroyo Vista Park on Sat., Aug. 16. Admission is free.

“It should be a great night. It’s a full moon and we will have vendors on hand selling popcorn and other movie treats,” said Jennifer Mellon, senior management analyst for Moorpark. CommCinema, an outdoor movie vendor, will start the entertainment at 7 p.m. and the movie will begin about 8 p.m.

“WarGames,” which hit the theaters in 1983, is a thriller about a teenager, played by Matthew Broderick, who accidentally hacks into the U.S. Department of Defense computer and nearly starts World War III.

The movie came out during the very early stages of the Internet, when access to the Web was limited and few people used personal computers. The scenario, which is much more plausible now, was a wake-up call for government leaders at the time, critics said.

“I think we picked a fun family movie that has relevance to the world today,” Mellon said.

The event is the first outdoor movie hosted by the city. People can bring chairs and something to eat or purchase food from a concession, said Mellon. She’s hoping a good number of people will attend the event so the city can continue to offer outdoor movies.

“This can be another community event where everybody spends time together with neighbors at the beautiful local park,” she said.
