This Saturday at Sweetwater Park near Thomson, area families have the opportunity to watch a baseball movie on a baseball field. The outdoor film screening of The Rookie, which stars actor Dennis Quaid, will be shown on an inflatable screen at Field 9 beginning between 8:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m., according to Bristol Tiller, program coordinator for the Thomson-McDuffie Recreation and Leisure Services.
“This is a great way to spend family time together,” said Mrs. Tiller. “It’s really a great movie.”
The outdoor movie will actually be shown on a 30-foot inflatable screen. As families spread their blankets or set up chairs to watch The Rookie, they also are invited to picnic with food and non-alcoholic beverages.
“It’s going to be a whole lot of fun,” added Mrs. Tiller. “I’d like to see a lot of families enjoying themselves at the ballpark this Saturday night. I think it will create a great family atmosphere and also a great way to create memories that will last a lifetime.”
Admission is only $3. Children, ages 5 and under, will be allowed entrance to the outdoor cinema for free.
“When you consider that you don’t have to pay a lot of money for admission and drive out of town to see a great movie, it’s really a great deal,” said Mrs. Tiller.
This weekend’s baseball movie is the second one of a three-movie open air cinema series. A third one, Angels in the Outfield, is scheduled to be shown on Saturday, June 27 – again at Sweetwater Park.
The movies are being made available to the public thanks to a $2,000 grant that the local recreation department applied for and received from the Grassroots Arts Program of Georgia.
“I actually applied for this grant, because I think this is a wonderful way for parents to do something together with their children,” pointed out Mrs. Tiller. “It’s a great way to have fun without having to spend a lot of money.”
Families can start arriving to picnic before the movie as early as 7 p.m. this Saturday.
