Roseburg, Oregon: Outdoor Movies in the Park Comes to Roseburg

Outdoor Movies Come to Roseburg, OregonFamilies can gather around the big screen this summer for some family-oriented entertainment around a really big screen at Stewart Park in Roseburg. After months of negotiation and detailed planning, outdoor movies are officially coming to the city of Roseburg. A month-long outdoor Movies in the Park program will kick off on June 6, said Bruce Kehe, a public relations consultant for U.S. Cellular. This is the first time Roseburg will host the outdoor cinema event, which U.S. Cellular offers at no charge to various cities it serves, including Medford and Pendleton. This is a great opportunity for everyone in the city to connect and enjoy a little bit of Hollywood for free, said Mayor Larry Rich, according to a news release. Following on the success of the Movies in the Park in other communities across the Northwest, we wanted to work with U.S. Cellular to bring the same excitement and family atmosphere to our residents. We're looking forward to bringing everyone in the community together for free family-friendly entertainment, said Heather Owens, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Oregon. As part of the arrangement, U.S. Cellular provides a large, inflatable movie screen, equipment and the movies. The city provides the space and electricity. The outdoor films will be shown starting at dusk June 6 and June 13, both Friday nights, and on June 19 and June 26, both Saturdays, according to a news release. Kehe said the movies are all family-appropriate movies that are a mix of newer and older releases. They all are rated G or PG. Various pre-show activities will start at 7:30 p.m., said Barbara Taylor, the city's Parks and Recreation Program manager, this morning. Although details are still being pinned down, the entertainment will be geared toward youth and include things such as face painting and performances by local children's dance troupes. Taylor said the city will be setting up a hot line for people to call to find out the movie titles and the entertainment for each week as well as posting the information about the outdoor movie events on its Web site. The outdoor movies are open to all ages and families are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs, along with food and drink to the park. Alcohol is not permitted. The city also is working to provide free popcorn and soda pop, Taylor said. The local Pepsi distributor is donating Pepsi products. The city is looking for businesses willing to sponsor providing popcorn for the outdoor movie nights. They may call Taylor at 440-1188 for more information. U.S. Cellular has offered Movies in the Park in Medford; Pendleton; Kennewick, Wash.; and in cities in Kansas and Missouri. This year it will start offering them in Ashland too. Based in Chicago, U.S. Cellular is the nation's fifth-largest, full-service wireless carrier, serving 6.2 million customers across the country.
