U.S. Marshal Edward "Teddy" Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are assigned to investigate the strange disappearance of Rachel Solando at the Ashecliff Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island located in Boston Harbor. They begin working with Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), and quickly come face to face with the many fears and paranoia of the patients.
Daniels begins to suspect a conspiracy on the island, as things aren't quite adding up. Yet his several efforts to expose the mis-deeds of the doctors by leaving the island are thwarted by the hospital staff and natural phenomena.
