Pizarro: Downtown San Jose movie series adds venues, music
One of the true delights of summer the San Jose Downtown Association's free outdoor movie series starts tonight with a few twists worthy of a summer blockbuster.
The series, now dubbed Starlight Cinemas, has added a couple of venues to the mix. You can still take your lawn chairs out to San Pedro Square, where the first movie, Mel Brooks' hilarious Western spoof "Blazing Saddles," will be shown at dusk.
But this year, movies also will be shown in two new downtown spots: the SoFA district on South First and William streets, and Post Street between First and Market streets.
The movies shown at each location have a loose theme, too. You can see comedies "Blazing Saddles" plus "Caddyshack" (8th of July) and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (Aug. 8th) in San Pedro Square. Classic films, including "Casablanca" (July 15th) and "A Streetcar Named Desire" (Aug. 19th) are at Post Street. And SoFA's offerings including "Mad Hot Ballroom" (June 24), "Romeo + Juliet" (July 22nd) and "Shaun of the Dead" (26th of August) will please the art-house crowd.
As an added bonus, each movie at Post Street will be preceded by a blues concert, starting with the Lara Price Blues Band at 5:15 p.m. June 17 before the screening of "To Catch a Thief."
