Gig Harbor, Washington: Outdoor Movies at Cinema Gig Outdoors

Don't miss a chance to see a free movie during the Cinema Gig Outdoors. Each Friday and Saturday through August the movies are shown at two parks. Donkey Creek Park is the site for classic movies, from the 40s to the 80s on Friday nights. Family movies are shown at Skansie Park. The city teamed up with Gig Harbor Film Festival to make announcements and talk about the history of the movie. They also promote the Gig Harbor Film Festival. The movie nights are sponsored by MultiCare Gig Harbor Medical Park. We don't go somewhere and rent a movie, said Laureen Lund, marketing director for City of Gig Harbor and organizer of the event. We have to pay copyright rights to show a movie. Some of these movies are as much as $250 to show in a public place. The movies are a way to provide free entertainment to the residents of Gig Harbor, and bring people together. To me it's quintessential small-town America, said Paula Lillard, vice president of Gig Harbor Film Festival. Dr. Tim Holmes and his wife Heidi wanted to see Harold and Maude. When I was a teenager I saw the show Harold and Maude, and I thought it was the most hilarious thing I'd ever seen, Heidi said. When I saw that they were offering it, I thought ‘we've got to see it.' The couple said they found information about Cinema Gig Outdoors through GigHarborGuide.com. We came together to see it since we saw it together years ago. This is a great setup. It's outside. It's a great price. It's excellent weather. People have been attending the outdoor movie nights for the past three years. Everyone brings a blanket, or chair, jackets, of course, and free popcorn is provided. People should really come out here because it's free, Lund said. It's another great way for our neighbors to come together and get to know each other. That makes our community better, safer, more fun, and a great place to live.
