Kitsap Peninsula, Washington: Community Rallies Around Outdoor Movie Screening Despite Economic Hardship

Recently lack of funding and budget constraints has caused Kitsap county to cut the outdoor movies and concerts which were previously offered free to the community. But local businesses rallied behind the outdoor cinema events to bring them back to life. Residents in Kitsap county felt that the free community events were an important part of their towns, and were able to raise the funding needed to continue the screenings and concerts. Now we are happy to report that several cities on the Kitsap peninsula are screening outdoor films for local communities.

In Bremerton a few years back, town developers wanted to gain some attention to their services so they started screening movies on the roof of an old JC Pennys building. The outdoor movies were so popular that the series has continued until this day.

Similarly, downtown Poulsbo will enjoy an outdoor cinema series, hosted by a local bookstore. Several other nearby cities are offering outdoor concerts due to popular demand. Most of these events are free and a great way to interact with the community. Community organizers have realized how important these free events are, and it looks like outdoor films and concerts are here to stay.

Bellevue, Washington: Free Outdoor Movie Series at Bellevue Downtown Park

Bellevue Downtown Park

Downtown Park

What’s better than seeing a good movie for a good cause? What about seeing it for free? That’s the deal for the Summer Outdoor Movies in the Park series, which begins Tuesday with a “Hotel for Dogs” screening in Bellevue Downtown Park next to Bellevue Square. Summer Outdoor Movies will play Tuesday evenings at dusk through Aug. 25.

Instead of an admission fee, series sponsor Intelius Inc. is asking all moviegoers to bring one item of clothing, food or school supplies to each outdoor film. Items will be donated to nonprofits working to help the approximately 56,000 children living below the poverty line in King County.

The kid-friendly movies range from classics like “Ghostbusters” and “Back to the Future” to new favorites like “Kung Fu Panda” and “Bride Wars.” The necessities collected at each screening will go toward a different King County organization, including Hopelink, YWCA and the Eastside Domestic Violence Program.

The films are: Tuesday, “Hotel for Dogs” (benefiting Hopelink); July 14, “Bride Wars” (Overlake Service League); July 21, “Second Hand Lions” (Eastside Domestic Violence Program); July 28, “The Express” (Boys & Girls Club of Bellevue); Aug. 4, “Madagascar 2″ (Treehouse); Aug. 11, “Kung Fu Panda” (YouthCare); Aug. 18, “Ghostbusters” (YWCA); Aug. 25, “Back to the Future” (Hopelink).

The first five outdoor films will be screened at Bellevue Downtown Park. Beginning with the Aug. 11 screening of “Kung Fu Panda,” films will be screened at the Eastgate Park Ball Field at the South Bellevue Community Center and will begin at dusk, or about 8:30 p.m.

Bellevue, Washington: Free Outdoor Movies in Bellvue's Downtown Park

Free Movies at ’s Downtown Park

Outdoor Movies in Bellevue, Washing tonRemember how much fun it was to go to a drive-in movie theater when you were a kid? (Well, maybe we’re older than you are. Trust us, it’s fun.)

Bellevue is going to be capturing some of that spirit this summer with its first-ever showing of outdoor summer movies in Bellevue’s Downtown Park.

The movies are all family-friendly, and they start July 7 at dusk (around 9 p.m.) with “Hotel for Dogs,” which will be shown on an inflatable, 25′ x 14′ movie screen that makes viewing comfortable for people sitting on 1,000 blankets or 2,000 chairs.

The movies, sponsored by Intelius, are free, but the point is to raise money for a variety of human service agencies on the Eastside. If you come to the July 7 showing, you should bring food items to donate to Hopelink. (Check the summer movie link as the day draws closer to find out exactly what types of items they’re looking for.)

How about making it a picnic? Overlake Service League, the nonprofit that will benefit from one of the movie nights, has teamed up with Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill to put together a special movie-goers menu available for anyone wanting to grab a to-go order and take it with them to the park. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Overlake Service League.
