Los Angeles, California: Film Aid Charity Event Brings Celebrity Appeal to Outdoor Movies

Outdoor Movies for a FimAid Event in Los AngelesLeave it to actress Kate Beckinsale and her husband, the director Len Wiseman, members of Hollywood’s reigning clique, to attract a powerful crowd to last night’s Martin + Osa FilmAid outdoor movie screening of All About Eve. An updated garden party at the Chateau Marmont, in , was the setting, and the cause was an organization that brings movies to African refugee camps and other vulnerable communities around the world. Beckinsale admitted that choosing a movie for the night wasn’t easy. “My husband and I are hosting it together, so it was actually quite tricky, since he’s a boy and I’m a girl, so we had a few arguments. But this one we both love,” Beckinsale said. “One of his favorite movies is Blade Runner, and I fell asleep during it.”

A press-shy Winona Ryder nursed a drink in the bar until the movie was set to begin, at which point she quickly made her way to her seat, accompanied by actress turned designer Tara Subkoff. Melissa George opted to forgo the screening altogether and instead retreated to the hotel lounge, where fellow Aussie Sophie Monk just happened to be enjoying a girls’ night out. Beckinsale took a brief reprieve from her hosting duties to play with Jacinda Barrett’s new baby daughter, whom Barrett and her husband, Gabriel Macht, brought along for the evening. Other guests included actor Gary Oldman, director Brett Ratner, and actress Sasha Alexander.

The charity event benefited Film Aid, and was co-hosted by Open Air Cinema, who provided the inflatable screen and equipment needed for the outdoor movie screening. Open Air Cinema has partnered with Film Aid in the past, including donating screens and outdoor cinema systems for the refugee camps and other humanitarian uses.

Waco, Texas: Entertainment Comes Closer to Home With Outdoor Movies

Outdoor Movies in Waco, TexasImagine an ideal night out on the town. For some, that would include an elegant dinner and a movie, followed by enjoying some live music. For others, perhaps a trip to an art gallery and watching a play would suit them. Until recently, enjoying these forms of entertainment would require a trip to or . But now, thanks to a community wide effort to change the environment and perception of ’s downtown area, can offer an ideal night out without having to trek up and down Interstate 35.

Waco businesses and officials are working to bring various forms of entertainment downtown as part of comprehensive remodeling efforts. In addition to the new infrastructure, downtown Waco is receiving a new cultural identity.

“We want to change the perception of downtown Waco,” Jonathan Garza of Heritage Events Waco said. “It doesn’t have a lot of foot traffic. We want people to realize downtown Waco is a fun and safe place to be.”

Heritage Events Waco is a local group that sponsors and promotes unique forms of downtown entertainment. It teamed with the Waco Chamber of Commerce this past summer to start “Movies in the Square,” where family-friendly outdoor movies such as “Shrek” and “Happy Feet” were projected on a 16-by-20 foot inflatable screen in Heritage Square at 330 Austin Ave. for the community to enjoy free of charge. The summer series attracted more than 2,500 people downtown. The fall movie series, which included “Talladega Nights,” saw similar success while catering more to Baylor students and young professionals.

Heritage Events also holds “Gridiron Grills” after Baylor home football games in Heritage Square. The outdoor event caters to football fans, with four big-screen TVs and inflatable screen broadcasting additional games and ESPN analysis. They also have food and drinks available and have been named the official Baylor post-game destination. The next “Gridiron Grill” after the Nov. 15 game against A&M University will feature a concert by country music star Mark .

“When I was at Baylor, the furthest downtown I ever came was for Ninfas. Now we hope these events, the new restaurants and the Hippodrome can change that,” Garza said.

“Three years ago, the biggest complaint heard about downtown Waco was there was nothing to do,” Garza said. “Now the biggest complaint is that there won’t be enough parking. That’s quite a shift.”

Davidson, North Carolina: Die-Hard Outdoor Movie Fans are Undeterred by Chilly Weather in Davidson, North Carolina

Outdoor Movies in Davidson, North CarolinaWho else but super community-minded Karen Toney of , would plan one of her wonderful outdoor movies (”Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”) on the Summit Big Screen and have temperatures drop into the 20s?

It must have been a hex from Severus Snape trying her patience as well as that of Barbara Freund of Main Street Books and the six shivering die hard fans huddled in the parking lot.

Undeterred, Karen has simply switched gears and will have “Rock Band” Wednesdays (albeit inside) instead of outdoor movies at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Shoppe on Main Street from 5-9 p.m. for the rest of fall. Instruction is available. Call 704-892-0604 for more details.

Telluride, Colorado: A Lack of Theaters Yeilds an Impromptu Open Air Cinema at the Telluride Film Festival

Open-Air Cinema at the Telluride Film Festival, ColoradoNearly a century ago, immortal talents such as the Marx Brothers, Sarah Bernhardt, Houdini and Lillian Gish journeyed to the remote mining town of , to entertain the miners in the Sheridan Opera House. Today, the venerable Sheridan still stands and welcomes the show people of our times. In this restored, historic, antique gem beats the heart of the Telluride Film Festival: it is that building’s antique sign, reading simply “SHOW,” that inspires so many of its traditions.

Since the Opera House is one of only three existing year-round theaters in the town, six more must come alive each Labor Day weekend for the Telluride Film Festival. A Victorian-flavored theatre emerges from the town’s Masonic Hall, a high school auditorium is transformed into the state-of-the-art Palm Theater, the middle school gym morphs into the Meliés-inspired Galaxy, intimate spaces on opposite sides of town form the Pierre and Backlot Theaters, and the Mountain Village Conference Center puts on its bunny ears to become Chuck Jones’ Cinema. There’s even an open-air cinema built in the park to enjoy the hot new films in the cool mountain nights. Out of necessity, they’ve been built, but we’d like to think that each theater has its own special character; unique spaces that infuse the films shown there with a little extra zest. Each venue is distinct, and like great character actors, each fleshes out the whole of the film-going experience. That’s just another part of The Show.

Marfa, Texas: Wide-Open Plains and Starry Skies Make the Perfect Backdrop for Outdoor Movies at the Marfa Film Festival

Outdoor Movies at the Marfa Film Festival, TexasThe Second Annual Film Festival will be held April 29 – May 3, 2009, screening over 50 features, shorts and experimental works. Because ’s wide-open plain, distant mountains and incomparably starry sky are part of the draw, Film Festival will have outdoor movie screenings during the festival. Indoor screenings will be anchored at the state-of-the-art Goode-Crowley theater. Festival headquarters will be at the famous Paisano Hotel (where James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor lived during the filming of “Giant”).

We’re in the high desert out here which means it gets chilly at night. If you’re coming to one (or more) of our five outdoor screening events, be sure to dress accordingly. You can bring chairs and blankets if you want, though chairs will be available to rent for three bucks (really comfortable chairs I should add). Still, there’s lots of room on the good Earth, so don’t be shy about bringing what you need to make a nest to watch the movie from. We’ll also have food and beverages, including beer and possibly margaritas for sale.

For the intrepid, Far West is an unforgettable place, far from the world, urging visitors back time and again to its awe-inspiring wildness and serenity. Particularly, there is Marfa, home to Marfa Film Festival, coming April 29 – May 3, 2009.

Marfa is a small town alone on a high plateau, a place defined by a history of separation, where life proceeds at its own distinct pace as a harmony of antithesis: cowboy culture and high-art. Designed as a gasp of fresh air, Marfa Film Festival is a retreat far away from the chaotic and competitive environments found on the festival circuit. It’s a get-a-way that is truly WAY out there.

Where else can you experience the unexpected magic of riding a bicycle in the moonlight through a desert town’s only (blinking) stoplight, find a hidden garden party through maps projected on the town’s 1800′s-era walls, take a school bus excursion to ancient sites and expansive western vistas, or watch movies under stars so close you can touch them?

Farmington Valley, Connecticut: Outdoor Movies Pop Up in Metropolitan Cities and Small Towns Alike

Outdoor Movies in Farmington, ConnecticutA balmy night, a friendly crowd, a night sky freckled with stars and a classic outdoor movie: What more could you want?

I was casting about for family-friendly things to do in the area last week when I came upon a bright yellow flyer at the Shoppes at advertising the center’s upcoming movie nights.

According to the schedule, the free outdoor movies include “The Wizard of Oz,” “Shrek the Third” and “Ratatouille.” A different flick will be shown at dusk every Saturday night from now till Aug. 30.

Long a tradition in Europe, outdoor movies have become a summertime staple in big cities throughout the United States. Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago are among the dozens of places that show films in public parks. In Washington, the Mall becomes a giant, open air screening room every Monday night in July and August. And in City’s Bryant Park, movie lovers begin staking out blanket space hours before the film rolls.

Smaller towns from to are also discovering that they can promote a sense of community and bring people with little more than some projection equipment and a patch of grass. West Hartford tried the idea in 2005, showing “The Incredibles” on the lawn outside the Faxon branch library.

Like the weekly farmer’s markets that have sprung up everywhere, it’s an old-world idea that captures vaguely nostalgic notions of small-town life, before the arrival of the 20-screen multiplex.

Except here’s the twist: These movies are being screened at newfangled lifestyle centers such as the Shoppes. (East of the river, the Promenade Shops at Evergreen Walk also hosts a movie night on Fridays.)

Drive-in theaters have largely disappeared from the American landscape; outdoor movies are closest most kids will get to that experience these days. So bring a lawn chair or a blanket and a bucket of popcorn and get ready to enjoy the show.

Felton, Delaware: Last Drive-In Theater Still Showing Outdoor Movies in Felton, Delaware

Outdoor Movies in Felton, DelawareAs Amanda Burck, 14, of Ridgely, Md., gathered with her family in the Diamond State Drive-In Theater’s snack bar for popcorn, candy, cheeseburgers and ice cream last Friday night, it could have been an autumn evening in 1967.

“I’m, like, really excited,” Burck said. “I’ve seen them on TV and heard stories, but I’ve never seen an actual drive-in.”

Diamond State, a 300-car theater on U.S. 13, is the last drive-in remaining in . As the 2007 season winds down, theater operators Donald Brown, 44, of , and Patricia Creigh, 36, of Lincoln, Del., are uncertain if their piece of post-war Americana will be around much longer. The theater’s founder and owner died in June, raising questions about whether the heirs will renew the lease on the 8-acre commercial property when it expires in 2008.

“We haven’t made a final decision,” said Robert Steele of Coatesville, Pa.

His parents, the late Mildred and Albert Steele, developed the theater in 1947. He has a written appraisal from Dover Consulting Service valuing the commercially zoned land at $1.2 million.

If the property is developed, the Felton drive-in would go the way of many of the nation’s outdoor theaters since the 1980s, said Susan Sanders, co-author of The American Drive-In Movie Theatre.

The biggest reason for the decline of drive-ins has been the rising value of the land, although escalating insurance costs and high property taxes haven’t helped, said Sanders, of Grapevine, .

The downtrend of drive-ins has had little to do with their popularity, according to Jennifer Sherer Janisch of Las Vegas, co-founder of the website www.drive-ins.com. Many were still profitable or even selling out when they closed, Janisch said.

At their peak in 1960, there were at least 5,000 drive-in theaters throughout the country, Sanders said. Today, there are roughly 400 drive-ins in the nation, Janisch said.

The number, she said, has stayed fairly stable in recent years, and there are still new ones opening. Texas has been a hot spot for new theaters in the past two years, she said.

In early September, James Chenault, 47, of Tyler, Texas, opened the Sky-Vue Drive-In Theater in Tyler with his brother-in-law and nephew. The total cost to open the theater, including the 35- by 70-foot screen, was about $300,000, he said.

Chenault said they invested heavily in the food operation, a known profit center for drive-ins. Not only does Sky-Vue make its own pizzas, the owners spent $25,000 for two popcorn machines.

Chenault said he’s bullish about the future of Sky-Vue because his research shows “you can make a pretty good living.”

The first drive-in movie theater was opened in 1933 by Richard Hollingshead in Camden, N.J., who wanted to attract customers to his auto parts company and gas station at night, Sanders said. His experiments in outdoor movies included hanging a sheet between trees.

More than a dozen drive-ins popped up before World War II, but the real growth came in the 1950s as families moved to suburbia, Sanders said.

Kenneth Steele writes in a history of the Diamond State Drive-In that the original sound system used by his parents was two 24-inch bullhorns. On a clear night, the sound could be heard 2 miles away. The Steeles quickly added the legendary in-car speakers.

Today, most outdoor theaters broadcast the soundtrack through the car radio or a portable radio, although some theaters retain the old window speakers to add to the atmosphere, Janisch said.

Bill Walton and his wife, Paula Smith, of Felton take their daughters, Nolah, 8, and Aylish, 11, to the Diamond State Drive-In once every two or three weeks. The family comes prepared with pizza or fried chicken, a cooler full of sodas, chairs and sleeping bags. The girls usually bring pajamas.

The family is so attached to the drive-in, they fantasize about winning the lottery and buying it. They say they also dream about reopening the closed roller rink on the property and decorating the restrooms in the 1950s style.

“We’d have Pink Ladies and poodle skirts,” like the movie Grease, Aylish Walton said.

Steele said he and his brother Robert plan to reach a decision about the drive-in before the end of the year. Brown said if he and Creigh are unable to renew their lease they will try to open a new one in western Sussex County, Del.

Since its rebirth in 1995, the Felton theater has largely been profitable, with the exception of the first few years, Brown said. At its peak in 2004, ticket sales totaled in the low six-figure range, Brown said.

“It’s a small business. We’re able to make a living from it,” he said.
