At this year’s 46th edition of the festival, there are some noticeable changes. For one, a stylized version of the symbol of Antalya, the Goddess Venus holding an orange in one hand, has returned as the golden award statuette for the festival. The Venus statuette was last used five years ago before it was replaced by a statue of a golden orange.

The festival will bring 150 films to town, with 16 Turkish and 12 international films competing for the golden Venus. There will be around 40 mobile cinema trucks screening various films around the city, thus creating an atmosphere just like an open-air cinema.

There were plans this year to create a “Eurasia International Film Festival” showcasing full-length feature films, but the name Eurasia was removed due to the large number of participants from all around the world.

The main theme at this year’s edition is cinema and its music from the 1960s.

In honor of this, veteran television anchorman Halit Kıvanç and young artist Nehir Erdoğan called many cinema artists to the stage during the Saturday opening ceremonies to thank them for contributing to Turkish cinema in the 1960s, when at least 100 films were shot per year. The highlight of the opening ceremony was the performance of Melahat Gülses, one of the most famous voices in Turkish classical music. She sang songs that had made movies memorable in the 1960s.

In comparison to other years, however, this year’s opening ceremonies were decidedly more low-key and directionless because there was no serious presentation of this year’s film line-up. In the end, such oversights were understandable given that the festival, organized by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and the Antalya Foundation for Culture and Arts, or AKSAV, has had a far lower budget than in previous years.

The ceremony hosted guests from Sweden, Syria and the US. “Even though we are tired when the festival ends each year, we can’t turn our back on Mardin,” says program director Zihni Tümer. The festival features both local and international films, and will feature outdoor cinema screenings as well.

The historic city of Mardin, home to art galleries, museums, open air cinemas and ancient churches, has become a center for cinema this week with the opening of the 4th Mardin Film Festival on Saturday. Festival director M. Helün Firat and program director Zihni Tümer welcomed guests at the ceremony, which was also attended by Mardin Governor Hasan Duruer.

Tümer said he was proud to be holding the fourth film festival in a city that had no movie theaters just two years ago, adding that he hopes to further expand the festival beyond the country’s borders. He is also looking forward to the open air cinema screenings, which will encourage local moviegoers to attend and give the audience an unforgettable experience of movies under the stars.

“This year the festival brings together two close cultures that have never come together before. The Turkish film industry and cinema have never had the chance to meet with Arab cinema although we only have the border as a barrier,” Tümer said.

With the collaboration of the New York-based cultural institution ArteEast, the festival’s focus this year is Arab cinema. “We are planning to start the festival here in Mardin next year and carry it to Damascus,” Tümer added. “There will be an opening here and three days later we are planning to travel with all the guests to Damascus and have another opening ceremony there at the Damascus Film Festival.” According to Firat, holding a film festival in Mardin is not as easy as organizing on in Istanbul or Adana because introducing a cinema culture in the southern city has been much more difficult. “Zihni and I never gave up, from the first day on,” Firat said. “We started organizing this festival here and even though we are tired when the festival ends each year, we can’t turn our back on Mardin.”

As has been the case at each installment of the festival, the opening ceremony was also kicked off with a speech from the city’s governor. Taking the microphone, Duruer noted that Mardin is the cultural capital of northern Mesopotamia. “Mardin, a nominee to UNESCO’s list of world cultural sites, will be purified of all kinds of pollution. We are doing our best to make this historic and charming city a center for cinema,” he said.

After Duruer’s speech, the festival’s open ceremony continued with a band’s cheerful tunes as the five musicians in the group The Nomadic Songs performed for guests. Lead singer Ayca Damgaci is also the scenarist of the first film screened at the festival, “My Marlon and Brando.” After the band, the youths in the Mardin Chorus took the stage to sing songs in Turkish, Kurdish and Syriac. The chorus made it to the finals in the televised competition “Clash of the Choirs.” After the concert, the film “My Marlon and Brando” was screened for an audience of nearly 60 people at the city’s Cumhuriyet Square in a setting that resembled a nostalgic open air cinema. The festival will hold more outdoor movie screenings at the square with the participation of local residents.

On Sunday, the film festival continued with conferences called “Regarding Other’s Pain” and “Focus on Arab Cinema.”

Starting Saturday, the festival will host internationally acclaimed filmmakers and screenwriters from Syria, Lebanon and Palestine throughout the week.

SineMardin film fest to hit the east Once again, the southern city of Mardin is set to become a hub for cinema with its SineMardin festival, but this time the event will be an international experience. Organized for the fourth time, SineMardin is expanding its territory by collaborating with ArteEast, a New York-based cultural institution that focuses on Arab cinema. The festival has also invited internationally acclaimed filmmakers and screenwriters from Syria, Lebanon and Palestine – including Ossama Muhammad, Noma Orman, Orwa Nyrabia, Anmar Hijazi and writer Khaled Khalifa – as well as young cinema students.

SineMardin, which starts Saturday and continues until June 26, offers viewers a selection of feature films, shorts and documentaries, as well as interviews and conferences focusing on other nations’ cinema sectors and cultures. The festival’s scope is expanding each year as it draws interest from around the world. When the SineMardin Film Festival was first organized, there were no movie theaters in the city. The event’s efforts to develop a cinema culture in the city have led to the opening of the first and only film facility in Mardin last year. This year, the festival will also have open-air cinemas hosting film screenings. “We are trying to bring back the nostalgia of the old times, so we decided to set up two open-air cinemas in the city,” said Zihni Tümer, one of the event organizers. Tümer, who has been managing the festival since its first year, said if everything goes as planned this year, the festival will be expand to Damascus in 2010.

Important names in cinema

Besides films and conferences, the festival hosts important names in cinema, including Nuri Kino, a Swedish director of Turkish origin who has won the Golden Palm award with his documentary “Assyrisska” and also works as a journalist in Sweden.

Syrian cinema pioneer Omar Amiralay, currently living in Paris, is another participant of the festival. Amiralay was awarded with a special prize at the Locarno International Film Festival for his movie “A Plate of Sardines,” about the Golan Heights under Israeli occupation.

The SineMardin festival will screen a variety of films, including award-winning Turkish movies. It also has a special section focusing on Arab cinema, organized with the collaboration of the Mardin Cinema Association and ArteEast. The program includes screenings of feature films, documentaries and short films by Arabic directors. The Arab-cinema program also includes seminars and conferences with the participation of the films’ directors and screenwriters. Organized by the Turkish Cinema Laborers’ Union, or SineSen, and Screenwriters Association, or SENDER, the conference “Regarding Other’s Pain” will take place in the mornings from Sunday to Tuesday and will include discussions on documentary-film production in the Middle East.

Another conference organized by SENDER and the Mardin Cinema Association addresses “The Importance of Screenwriting in the Film Industry.”

Going international for the first time, the festival is hosting films from a nearby, but still very unknown, country. A selection of contemporary Syrian cinema will be screened at Babil Hall under the title “Focus on Arab Cinema.” Beside the screenings of selected films, SineMardin and the Damascus Higher Institute of Drama have collaborated to bring a delegation of young moviemakers to participate in the festival.

The festival will also provide space for people who want to participate in educational activities around film studies. As in previous years, the Mardin Cinema Association will host a Short Film Atelier under the name of the Mardin Film Workshop, an eight-week course.

In total, there will be 12 short films and 15 feature-length films screened at the festival. The event’s opening ceremony is being organized in the historic Erdoba Residence on Saturday and will include a screening of the film “My Marlon and Brando.”

The film festival’s program really kicks off on Sunday, when regular film screenings and the “Regarding Other’s Pain” conference start, and the festival features an American Documentary Showcase and the conversation with Swedish director Nuri Kino.

The following is a review of “Un Giorno Perfetto” by Elliott Stein of The Village Voice.
Ozpetek’s latest, A Perfect Day (2008), marks the first time the director has brought to the screen a story not written by him (and Gianni Romoli, his frequent collaborator), but one based on a pre-existing text (a bestselling novel by Melania Mazzucco). The main plot is a grim tale of domestic violence, an impeccably acted, intelligent drama (with a mesmerizing stint by Valerio Mastandrea as a nutcase, wife-stalking cop). But the pic gets stalled by a clump of badly integrated secondary characters and is burdened with an overemphatic musical score. The delicious Yilmaz turns up in a brief cameo near the end. Now, if only Ozpetek would cook up a starring vehicle for this treasure.

The Divan Talya Hotel and Convention Center was the venue for the official opening of the 45th Golden Orange Film Festival, the oldest national film festival in Turkey. The “al fresco” element- the outdoor movies- added to the magic of the evening. Turkish guests, foreigners and the people of Antalya gathered on a terrace overlooking the Gulf of Antalya on Saturday. The invitation said “black tie” but, like most society events in Turkey, jeans and T-shirts were as prominent as graceful evening dresses. Dagger-heeled shoes, however, were the regulation.

The climax was the parade of stars in convertibles that set out from the Divan Hotel and inched along the main thoroughfare of the city, past the iconic fluted minaret to Konyaaltı and the open-air theater at Beachpark. Antalyans responded magnificently, lining the streets, jostling, blowing kisses, shaking hands and applauding the stars in the 20 convertibles. Heavenly stars also appeared, and the moon came out for a sneak preview. Opposite Atatürk Park, a colorful “Dancing Waters” display featured fountains swaying in time to music. Breezes wafted mist and droplets over stars and spectators. There were perfect conditions for the outdoor movies.

The open-air performance was hosted by Ceyda Düvenci and Levent Üzümcü and kicked off with a mini concert by Turkish singer Candan Erçetin. An honorary award was presented to Turkish actress/singer Hülya Avşar. Cult film director Yılmaz Atadeniz, Müşfik Kenter, a prominent stage, screen and voice artist, and legendary actress Filiz Akın also received awards.

A gala on Sunday evening opened the fourth Eurasia International Film Festival at the Antalya Culture Center (AKM), an unforgettable evening of awards, suspense and the up-tempo spirit only a film festival can generate. Venerable composer Zbigniew Preisner was honored for the original scores he composed for Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy. Michael York then accepted an honorary Golden Orange statuette, mentioning in his speech that this was a dream come true for him because he has wanted to come to Antalya all his life! Paul Verhoeven, Dutch-American director and head of the festival’s grand jury, was also honored. In his speech afterwards, he said, “This is my third time in Turkey, and my second in Antalya.” He also revealed that he will be in Antalya again. “We are making the sequel to the ‘Thomas Crown Affair,’ and it will be filmed almost entirely in Turkey. Presently, we are scouting for talent, crews and local extras in Antalya and in İstanbul. This is a country with so much to offer, especially the wonderful location of both cities,” he added. The awards were presented by Antalya Mayor Menderes Türel and Engin Yiğitgil, the president of Turkish Foundation of Cinema and Audiovisual Culture (TÜRSAK), which organized the festival.

The cast of “Un Giorno Perfetto” (A Perfect Day), the opening-night film, put the spotlight on Turkish director Ferzan Özpetek, who received an energetic ovation. Producer Domenico Procacci stated that it was the first time he had worked with Özpetek and that it would not be the last. Also present were actress Isabella Ferrari, who played the recklessly distressed Emma, and Valerio Mastandrea, who played her psychotic husband, Antonio. Ferrari has almost 50 films to her credit and has been directed by Özpetek in other films. “Ferzan Özpetek absolutely inspired me as an actress,” she told a packed audience of 600. Child actor Gabriele Paolino, who played the cheeky Kevin, also worked with Özpetek in a previous film. The film is a chilling family drama, and only the plot could be considered perfect. But for those at the festival and its star-studded opening ceremonies, the whole weekend was perfetto.

While the famous faces of the silver screen – cinema critics, artists and directors – walked the red carpet and saluted to cameras and people waiting to see them as they exited their limousines, the locals who were invited were left waiting at the back door of the Konyaaltı Open air theater, where the opening ceremony was held Friday night.

The shuttles took press members and guests who were invited to the ceremony and brought them to the back door, which has traditionally been open for them to enter the outdoor movie venue without having to weave through the crowds on the red carpet. This year a closed, guarded door greeted locals in lieu of a welcoming committee.

“We cannot let you in from this door,” said the security guard, whereas the locals objected, shouting that the entrance was the one used for entering the theater for the opening of the outdoor film festival for many years. Some locals left in disappointment, while others waited until they were let in – 40 minutes after the start of the ceremony.

“I have attended all the opening ceremonies of the festival for the past 10 years and I have never experienced anything this rude,” said Sıdal Işık, one of the guests who stayed out. “I hate telling this kind of things, but I am the wife of one of the founding members of this festival, Melih Işık. I attend the festival every year and we are always invited to the opening ceremonies of the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival,” said Işık, standing next to a close friend with disappointment written all over her face.

She was not the only one who was outraged. An elderly woman with an injured leg was told by a security guide to walk to the main gate, where the red carpet leads the guests inside the open air theater. A guest from Cyprus, Murat Obenler, was surprised that such a thing could happen at one of the biggest festivals in Turkey. Having been invited for the first time, Obenler said, “This is an unbelievably rude attitude toward the guests.” Obenler, who is organizing film festivals back in Cyprus, emphasized that no organizer listened to what they were saying. “The door was shut to our face, and from the other side of the fences we heard the security guards saying, ‘We cannot let you in; you have to walk to the main gate.’”

İsmail İzgi, who is responsible for security, told the Turkish Daily News they were instructed not to let anybody in the back door this year. Saying there was no one responsible for warning the guests or the shuttle drivers not to come to the gate, İzgi acknowledged there was a lack of communication.

Most of the guests left the venue saying they would never attend to the festival again, and others were let in by İzgi later. He apologized after the ceremony started.

Int’l Eurasia Outdoor Film Festival kicks off

The opening of the Golden Orange Film Festival was followed by the opening ceremony of the fourth International Eurasia Film Festival. The ceremony was held in the beautiful outdoor film venue: Festival Palace Atatürk Culture Center, or AKM. After the ceremony the Turkey premiere of celebrated director Ferzan Özpetek’s latest film “A Perfect Day” took place. Presented by actress and beauty queen Azra Akın, the ceremony started with a performance delivered by renowned musicians Barbaros Erköse and İlhan Erşahin. The president of the festival and the TURSAK Foundation, Engin Yiğitgil, presented the festival’s honorary award to composer Zbigniew Preisner, famous for the original scores he composed for Krzysztof Kieslowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy and “Dekalog.” The presentation of the awards continued with actor Michael York, who is celebrating the 44th year of his performing career. The president of the fourth International Eurasia Film Festival Grand Jury, storyteller and master director Paul Verhoeven, presented the honorary award of the festival along with Antalya’s mayor, Menderes Türel, and Engin Yiğitgil. Saluting the audience in his speech, Verhoeven said he had been working on a film set in Turkey and had perused locations in Antalya and Istanbul. Before the launching of the festival’s opening film, film director Özpetek, star of the film “Isabella Ferrari” and producer “Domenico Procacci,” greeted the audience.

Summer is about to end. These days are the last chances to enjoy open-air cinema excitement. Istinye Sadi Gülçelik Sports Complex’s Enka Eşref Denizhan open-air theater, which opened the season in the beginning of August, offers this chance until Sept. 15. So bring your blanket and catch a cool flick on a giant outdoor movie screen.

Open air cinemas have been among the essential pleasures of summer nights for years. Seeing the sun go down while sipping a Coke and watching one of the latest movies or a good oldie is a fabulous way to pass the time. It is summer in Istanbul go out and enjoy it while it lasts.

The Turkish Daily News has visited one of the city’s open air theaters and forecasts a great night out. So bring your blanket and catch a cool flick on a giant outdoor movie screen.

This year’s Enka Summer Event in Istanbul runs until Tuesday at the Istinye Sadi Gülçelik Sports Complex’s Enka Eşref Denizhan open air theater. There are just two days left to experience this open air cinema, so don’t wait.

The first showing Friday is “Zohan” at 9:15 p.m. Then, at midnight, the screen will show “Pathology.”

Saturday’s closing show is a Turkish film called “Kabadayı.” It will also begin at 9:15 p.m.

This event is organized and hosted by Tılsım Yılmaz. It is the first time we did this. We rent this theater for the summer and screen different movies every night.

Turkish people as well as foreigners can see the screenings because movies are screened in their own language with Turkish subtitles, said Yılmaz.

Tickets can be purchased at the entrance or through Biletix and cost YTL 10.

Refreshments and snacks are available just outside the theater area. Just follow the flaming torches on the side to reach the snack bar. There is a nice terrace with colorful pillows spread around. Lie down and relax during the intermission to complete your summer night out.

Directions

Take the metro to the final Levent stop and from there take a taxi or dolmuş to Istinye Park Shopping Center. From there walk up (about a hundred meters) to the left until you arrive at a sports complex. Walk down the hill and you will see the amphitheater on your right.
