Greer, South Carolina: Outdoor Movies Return to Greer City Park

Late-night Shock Theater, with all its classic horror and monster movies, will be relived on the big screen at City Park next month with “Thursday Thrillers,” a four-week movie series that ends the night before All Hallows’ Eve with a true cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“Fans of these movies have very likely only seen showings in movie theaters or on television. Bringing the thrillers in an open-air venue presents a completely new viewing experience,” said Laurie Campbell, City of Greer events coordinator.

Thursday Thrillers builds on the successful Moonlight Movies summer series, at which crowds topped out at more than 600 viewers in the 500-seat City Park amphitheater, Campbell said.

The Halloween series opens Oct. 8 with “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” the 1956 science-fiction horror film about a small-town doctor who discovers that townspeople are being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates that have killed and disposed of their human victims.

“The Birds,” a classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller, will be shown Oct. 15, followed by a double-feature monster marathon Oct. 22. “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” introduces audiences to a creature lurking in the deep, black waters of the Amazon, while “The Wolf Man” will have viewers wandering the forests of Wales when the full moon rises.

“Twilight Zone: The Movie,” a 1983 film based on tales from Rod Serling’s television series, will be shown Oct. 29. A costume contest will precede the show with prizes for the best dressed.

Concessions and beer sales will begin at 6 p.m., and movies will be shown at 8 p.m.

Thursday Thrillers concludes on a Friday, Oct. 30 to be exact, with a rare outdoor showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” restricted those who are 18 years old and older. Viewers will be swept into the bizarre world of Dr. Frank N Furter, the sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.

Concessions and beer sales will begin at 9 p.m. that evening, followed by preshow activities and an 11 p.m. show time.

Charleston, South Carolina: Eye Level Art Presents Summer Outdoor Movies on the 103 Green

Outdoor Movies in Charleston, South CarolinaA lot of the outdoor cinema events happening around the country this summer are pretty run-of-the-mill: a family-friendly movie in the park, usually “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” or “Shrek”. Which is great – a cost-effective family activity under a beautiful summer sky; an opportunity to get out into our parks and downtown areas and associate with our neighbors and friends in a community experience. It brings people together, it revitalizes public spaces, and I affirm these outdoor movie events wholeheartedly. But the truth is: there’s only so many times you can see “The Bee Movie”. Or “Dark Knight”, even. That’s why I’m always excited to see outdoor film screenings that break the mold, the guerrilla screenings that take place in impromptu parking lots and show subversive shorts, or museums and galleries that use outdoor cinema as an art form. And tonight, , is being treated to one of these more unusual screenings as Eye Level Art Presents an outdoor movie on the 103 Green.

Eye Level Art is a contemporary art gallery in Charleston, and this summer they will be hosting outdoor movie screenings of some of the lesser-screened films: vintage classics, local and independent films, and the occasional cult classic (because you can never see “Donnie Darko” too many times!). Tonight’s premier screening will show Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest”. Doors open at 8:00pm; the film will begin at sundown. Guests are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Beer, wine, and food will be sold throughout the open air cinema screening.

Where: 103 Spring St.
When: TONIGHT, July 21, 8:00pm
Movie: “North by Northwest” (1959)
Description: New York advertising executive Roger Thornhill is kidnapped by a gang of spies led by Philip Vandamm, who believe Thornhill is CIA agent George Kaplan. Thornhill escapes, but must find Kaplan in order to clear himself of a murder it is believed he committed. Following Kaplan to Chicago as a fugitive from justice, Thornhill is helped by beautiful Eve Kendall. In Chicago, she delivers a message to Kaplan that almost costs Thornhill his life when he is chased across a cornfield by a crop-dusting plane.

Greenville, South Carolina: Movies at the Park Back With 'Mystery' Film

Movies at The Park back with ‘Mystery’ Film

Outdoor Movies in Greenville, South CarolinaHeritage Park will launch the second season of its popular summer outdoor movies series, Movies at the Park, with a bit of a mystery. Organizers won’t release the name of the movie that will be featured first when the movie series opens July 14.
They said they’re forbidden to announce the name of the flick publicly, though they can print fliers and have permission to show the movie.

All they’ll say is it’s a movie about a teenage wizard and his adventures and is based on a best-selling book. They’re leaving the actual title to show-goers deductive powers.

“It’s going to be that movie that leads into the movie that’s premiering around the country the following day involving a teenage wizard,” said Russell Hawes, Simpsonville city administrator. “It’s the fifth installment of that series. That’s what we’ll be showing Tuesday night.

“That’s the way we’re advertising it,” Hawes said.

Contractual obligations forbid the city from releasing the name of the movie, though it can describe in depth the movie’s details, said Cindy Ogletree, Heritage Park Amphitheater manager.

Ogletree said Warner Brothers, which owns the rights to the movies, placed a moratorium on the title in advance of the sixth installment’s release.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” opens in theaters nationwide July 15.

“They said, ‘You can do fliers. You can pass out fliers. You can have a poster on site, but you cannot put it on your Web site or (advertise),’” Ogletree said.

The movie-title mystery ends this week, however. The rest of the movie schedule will be posted at www.heritageparkamphitheater.com.

Simpsonville will show seven movies in the Tuesday evening series this summer. All movies are free. Gates to the amphitheater will open at 6:30 p.m. with children’s activities and inflatable rides before the movies start after sunset, by about 8:45 p.m., Ogletree said.

Attendees can bring food and non-alcoholic drinks into the park and are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Concessions also will be sold on site.

The rest of the schedule includes:

July 21: “Kung Fu Panda”

July 28: “Hotel for Dogs”

Aug. 4: “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” sponsored by Hillcrest Memorial Hospital

Aug. 11: “The Tale of Despereaux”

Aug. 18: “Get Smart”

Aug. 25: “Iron Man”

Charleston, South Carolina: Cinebarre Theater Goes on Location Throughout Charleston

Cinnebarre On Location in ,

Outdoor Movies in Charleston, South CarolinaDinner-and-a-movie dates everywhere were already one-upped by Cinebarre providing a restaurant-style menu, service and drinks to its theater experience. And just when you thought going to the movies couldn’t get any better, Cinebarre went and outdid itself.

Now, Cinebarre is portable.

Cinebarre On Location is a multifaceted entertainment machine. The theater, on Houston Northcutt Boulevard in Mount Pleasant, is taking movies to you.

Going to areas throughout Charleston, Cinebarre On Location will show movies outside for the whole community to enjoy. The party and all-you-can-eat menu will be themed to the movie being shown, beer wagons will accompany the food and DJs or live music will entertain for two hours before showtime.

“The coolest thing about this venture is that rarely, if ever, can you go to the movies and hang out with people and sit and eat and have some social time,” said Cinebarre’s Director of Special Events Christina Callison.

“My generation didn’t really get to experience the drive-in movie phenomenon and I envy that. This is the modern drive-in. Parking won’t be an issue, we have a lot of space, the sound quality is great, we’ll have surround sound around the whole area, you’ll feel like you’re in the movie. It provides a lot more excitement and the entertainment factor is much bigger.”

Most scheduled locations will be able to accommodate around 2,000 people and every location is selected just for the showing. Attendees also will be asked to bring their own seating. This means anything from blankets to chairs or even couches. In addition to surround sound, the movie will be shown from an actual feature film projector and the reel will be built just like it is in theaters in the portable projection trailer.

“And the screen is 31 by 46 feet. It’s huge, it’s tremendous, it’s so much bigger than our normal screens in the theater,” Callison said. “It inflates in six to eight minutes flat and goes up seamlessly. It doesn’t blow over, it’s weather resistant. Our CEO believes in doing it right the first time. It definitely is the sturdiest thing. And the inflation of the screen will be part of the show. It’s a really cool thing to watch happen.”

On-location showings will start with the “Midnight Special,” which will be showing the most-anticipated movies at midnight the night before their official release. Future shows will include old movie classics, new releases, children’s events, a pet event where you can bring the family’s best friend and holiday events showing relevant favorites.

“It is way more awesome because of every aspect,” Callison said. “Where else can you go and get all you can eat food, beer, watch a concert or have a DJ, hang out with your friends and see a movie? It’s a night where you would go to six different places, but here, it’s all in one. It’s pure and total entertainment. It’s the entire experience. There’s not anything like it.”

Different Experience in Outdoor Movies: from China to Columbia, South Carolina

Outdoor Movies in China and Columbia, South CarolinaWhile the newest Harry Potter movie was shown in the most cutting-edge digital theaters around the US, an open-air theater also attracted hundreds of people to a small park in downtown , to watch outdoor movies.

I’m not talking about a drive-in theater, but a “real” outdoor cinema. No roof, no chairs, no lights. Everybody sits on the lawn, facing a medium size screen set up temporarily, with a couple of huge speakers on each of its sides. Every Friday evening, when the last sun light disappears, the outdoor movie starts. The show is free, sponsored by a local church in the summer months, and it has become a favorite Friday night activity since last summer.

Watching outdoor movies used to be popular around , both in cities and rural villages, at a time when movie theaters were still rare. I remember going to such movies with my parents as a little girl, which were usually shown on an outdoor basketball court in the university campus where my parents worked. The screen was just a huge white cloth, decorated by a few small holes, hung from trees or poles or whatever agents available.

I was too young to understand the movies, but was truly impressed by the crowds. Once the movie was over, people stood up in the bitter darkness, with a small stool—mostly wooden, plastic ones were not widely available yet—in everyone’s hand, grandma or young kid, student or professor. Everyone was surrounded by many others, and it was hard to move. It took a long time for the crowd to disperse to different directions, when everybody finally made the way home.

While outdoor movies were pretty much a cheap entertainment in China, those in today’s United States are more about outdoor fun and family activity, although sometimes such movie shows are as cheap as free. People bring their kids, along with a bunch of lawn chairs, plenty of blankets to sit and lie down on the lawn, and sometimes picnic basket to enjoy a good meal before the movie starts.

The park is beautiful and the air is cool and nice at summer night. But there is one thing troublesome, the weather. Columbia in July and August is constantly under thunderstorm threat and rains often in the evening. One evening the movie just started when it started to down pour. Another day saw people hurry to pack up and leave in the middle of the show because the lightening and thunder were getting closer and closer. There were still other times when we had to give up the plan to go all together simply because we felt tired of guessing the rain chance.

But whenever we went down there, it was always fun and refreshing. I just hope that next week we don’t have to watch the sky all the time.

Rock Hill, South Carolina: Outdoor Movies a Hit in Rock Hill

Outdoor Movies in Rock Hill, South CarolinaSome skeptics said local residents wouldn’t show up for outdoor screenings of classic movies in downtown .

They were wrong.

About 300 people turned out Friday to see “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (the 1971 version, not the Johnny Depp remake). A week earlier, a similar audience of 300 viewed “Some Like it Hot,” the Billy Wilder masterpiece featuring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe.

That crowd reportedly was full of young adults, many of whom may have seen this 1959 film for the first time. The experience no doubt was a revelation: “Some Like it Hot” was voted by the American Film Institute in 2000 to be the funniest American movie of all time.

Even more people, however, went to see “E.T. — The Extraterrestrial,” Steven Spielberg’s charmer from 1982. We bet many older viewers took the opportunity to watch this great film with their children and grandchildren.

Organizers got cooperation from the weather, with no rain to spoil any of the screenings. While admission was $3, many took advantage of the deal where a receipt from a downtown merchant would get you a free pass — which also was a boon for the merchants.

Candy Randall, the city’s downtown development manager, gets much of the credit for this venture. Outdoor movies have been so successful that more screenings are planned for the near future.

This is more than just another way to entice people to spend time and money downtown. It’s an event, a communal experience that heightens our sense of community and enhances the city’s image.

Congratulations to all involved. We’re eager to see what the next outdoor flick will be.
