PKP Polish Railways, the Orange mobile phone operator and Outdoor Cinema have introduced a special ‘cinema carriage’ on what is one of the longest train routes in Poland – at 15 hours long – between 1 July and 31 August.

Up to six films will be shown, including such box office successes as Slumdog Millionaire, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Lost in Translation and Pulp Fiction.

As part of the project involving the sister cities of Sopot and Zakopane, the same films will be shown in open-air locations in both towns, also free of charge. Known as Poland’s summer and winter capitals, Sopot and Zakopane are by far the most popular tourist destinations in Poland. (mk/pg)

Summer in the City…

Yoga in the park, outdoor cinemas and Chopin in Lazienki Park – for free – are just a taste of what Polish metropolitan areas have to offer their residents.

While summer means vacation for many, it also means balmy evenings with not much to do. Fortunately, Poland’s cities provide much in the way of free entertainment for those stuck in their metropolis.

Movies in the Park

Warsaw:

Starting on 23 June, the biggest outdoor cinema in Poland kicks off in Warsaw’s parks. For ten weeks, sixty feature films from all over the world will be shown in six different parks in the capital. Many of the movies will be premier publicly for the first time in Poland. Every night of the week (with the exception of Mondays) will feature a new film. Details are available soon on the website.

On Tuesdays, at Pole Mokotowskie, the movie theme will be ‘Bollywood’: movies filled with music, dance, color and Indian culture.

On Wednesdays, in the amphitheater of Park Sowinski, the best British comedies, including the Monty Python cycle, will be shown.

Thursdays, in Art Park Frascatti, by Buffo Theater, will feature French films.

Fridays, film buffs will have the opportunity to learn about Colombian films in Ogrod Saski, and there will be “meet and greets” with prominent directors Sergio Cabrera and Harold Trompetero, who are flying in for the movie festival to present their latest films.

On the weekends, starting with Saturday in Park Skaryszewski, there will be an ‘author’s cycle,’ that includes the most interesting films from Polish cinema of the past two-three years plus the world’s greatest classics. The movie that will kick off the event is Cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe Tornatore.

Sundays will feature a cycle of films from the Balkan region in Park Praski.

Poznan:

A similar idea in Stary Browar (‘Old Brewery’), in Poznan, will commence on 10 June at 9:30 pm. The first movie to be shown is The Big Blue directed by Luc Besson and will be presented on an original projector film tape. A number of movie classics will be presented throughout the summer until 28 August.

This festival takes place under the “Lato na Dziedzincu” program which also includes concerts.

Krakow:

This summer, Teatr Slowacki will host June-July movie viewings “under the stars” with a theme titled Paris-Moscow-Berlin Summer Traveling…in time. For the next three Mondays, starting 22 June – 6 July, the movies presented will be a ‘virtual journey’ through Europe before the 90’s.

To add to this theme, the movie soundtracks to the films will be presented and performed “live” by famous musicians in Krakow. For more information, see the website and entrance is free.

Yoga in the Park

An organized project called “Yoga in the Park” offers free yoga classes focusing on the joy of life and lessons on health and well being. The classes have already started in Warsaw at Pole Mokotowskie on 31 May, and on 7 June they started in Szczecin, northern Poland. Starting on 27 June there will be additional lessons held in Park Skaryszewski in the capital, and on 28 June, outdoor classes will begin in Bydgoszcz, Lodz, Krakow, Torun, and Wroclaw providing plenty of places to catch a moment of relaxation and zen, even if you live in the city.

50 Years of Chopin in the Park

Starting in May and going all the way to September, Chopin concerts are held in Warsaw’s Lazienki Krolewskie Park every Sunday. The concerts, given by world-class piano players, take place by the statute of Fryderyk Chopin and take place at noon and at four in the afternoon.

The high level of performers is guaranteed by the Fryderyk Chopin society that engages pianists from around the world for the whole concert season. The Chopin concert started on 16 May 2009 and the concerts include classical, jazz and rock interpretations of Chopin. For more information, check the website.

Summer with Opera

From 12 June until 5 July, the XIII Annual Summer Opera Festival in Krakow will take place. For the fourteen nights of the festival, the spectators will be able to see the most interesting positions of the Krakow Opera scene, an outdoor spectacle, and a musical sighting composed of Polish and world opera singers. The festival will also hold two spectacles Poland’s neighbours: one from the Czech Republic Gianni Schicchi/Suor Angelika and one from Slovakia, Madame Butterfly. The festival is set by Zamek Krolewski on Wawel hill and by the new Krakow Opera building. More information is available here. (mmk/mmj)

A movie distribution company has revived the old practice of outdoor movies with touring cinema, and is taking the new film about Solidarity priest Father Popieluszko out on the road. Many cinemas throughout the country are closing, leaving rural areas without access to film, so the touring cinema program brings outdoor movies to them. It was especially important to the program to feature films made in and about their native land, which is why they chose to feature “Popieluszko, Freedom is Within Us” (2009). The film depicts the true story of the life of Father Jerzy Popieluszko, the priest called “The Solidarity Chaplain”, murdered by communist secret police. The following is a review of the film presented by Polskie Radio. You can read the original blog post about the outdoor film event here.

The movie depicts the life and a martyr’s death of Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko, chaplain of the Solidarity freedom movement abducted, tortured and brutally murdered by functionaries of the communist regime twenty five years ago.

The story starts with the childhood of the priest, moves on to show his youth when he was drafted to the obligatory communist military service, becomes a priest and heroic chaplain of the Solidarity movement, who defies the regime by preaching the truth, peace and justice. The story is set against the historic background: nationwide strikes and freedom rallies brutally crushed by communists during the martial law.

It took seven months to complete the movie. “Popiełuszko. Freedom is within us” was shot in 14 Polish cities and featured over seven thousand actors and extras.

More than fifty localities in all regions of Poland are on the itinerary of the touring cinema which hits the road with “Popieluszko, Freedom is Within Us”, a feature film on the life, pastoral work and the murder of the Solidarity priest, Father Jerzy Popieluszko, which premiered this month.

The first Outdoor Cinema screening is in a school in Ząbki near Warsaw, which was Father Popieluszko’s first parish, in 1972-75. The tour is organized by Outdoor Cinema, a Polish company which draws on the tradition of touring cinemas of the 1970s and 80s in this country. Its president, Adam Adamski, told the Polish Press Agency that at a time when many small cinemas are being closed, the inhabitants of the regions with no multiplexes have virtually no chance to see the latest productions. Outdoor movies, and touring cinema, is an ideal solution to this problem.

Still from "Popieluszko, Freedom is Within Us"

Polish Television is the media sponsor of the outdoor film project, with extensive publicity on its information channel TVP Info.

“Popieluszko, Freedom is Within Us” goes on general release in Polish cinemas on Saturday, 27 February. It is one of the most eagerly awaited Polish movies of the last two decades. A full-length feature film debut by director Rafał Wieczyński, it took seven months to make and involved almost seven thousand extras in the scenes of the priest’s funeral and of Solidarity demonstrations.

ERA NEW HORIZONS is a festival of films that go beyond the limits of conventional cinema, from the kinds of films chosen to the new addition of outdoor movie events. Deciding about the formula of our festival, especially of its competition part, we asked ourselves a question: is there in the 21st century cinema (shaped by the mass audience and its tastes) a place for directors who go against the current, for individualists who use their own style, their own inimitable language.

Such haughty artists still exist in different parts of the world, although they find it ever harder to realise their projects. And yet their art does have its lovers – it is for those lovers that the festival is organised.

Guided by our own taste, from among hundreds of films that are screened yearly at festivals all over the world, we choose those that due to their unusual form and force of expression will not let the audience forget them. All over the world, they give rise to polemics and discussions, praise and protest. And yet it is such films that usually set the newest trends in world cinema art.

ERA NOWE HORYZONTY is a festival of film visionaries, of uncompromising artists who have the courage to follow a path of their choice against the current trend and to tell about the most important things using their own unique language.

Era Nowe Horyzonty (Era New Horizons) Film Festival began life in 2001 in Cieszyn in the West of Poland, with the ambitious mission statement of showcasing cinema that ran against contemporary trends. A flavour of what to expect can be gleaned from the types of ground-breaking films shown at previous editions of the festival – such as Almodovar’s ‘Talk to Her’, Ozon’s ‘Eight Women’ and Sokorov’s ground-breaking ‘Russian Ark’, which was shot in one take in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg.

Growing in popularity, scope and ambition, the year 2006 saw New Horizons move to Wroclaw, where the event continues to support and expose the most interesting works being made from all around the world. With so much of today’s cinema directed towards the mass audiences and the box office, high brow film lovers will be delighted with the chance to see movie-making at its rawest and most inimitable… It is exactly for these purists that this event is organised!

2008 saw a winning formula of competitions, reviews, retrospectives and a host of exciting accompanying events come once again to Wroclaw in the form of the ENH film festival. The international competition as always forms the backbone of the event but an intimate look at both Brazilian and New Zealand cinema proved fascinating, whilst concerts in Wroclaw’s opera house and hip parties in the Arsenal building no doubt helped to heat up the atmosphere. Audiences loved the outdoor movie events, put on by DobreKino on a giant inflatable screen.

The Lublin Summer Film Academy kicked off in November with a variety of outdoor movie events. For 10 days film fans had an opportunity to see 330 films from 5 continents and 55 countries. Feature films, documentaries and cartoons were viewed on 8 outdoor movie screens in eastern cities of Zwierzyniec, Biłgoraj and Zamość.

Main figure of film retrospectives will be Carlos Saura, Eric Rohmer and Theo Van Gogh. Initiator and chancellor of the Academy Piotr Kotowski is not afraid to compare the outdoor cinema event with another prestigious Polish film festival “TWO RIVERSIDES” in Kazimierz Dolny and Janowiec.

As one of the organisers of the Academy, Barbara Szymańska, points out, the festival gathers people from all around Poland. Screenings are accompanied by lectures by film critics and discussions with the authors.

After the outdoor movies, theatre performances and concerts take place.

The Summer Film Academy is one of the largest events of that kind in Poland. The festival is prepared mainly by volunteers.

Outdoor movies are shown which include the great composer’s work. In 2006, the festival put the spotlight on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with a Music Film Festival in the square in front of City Hall with operas and classical music films projected onto a giant screen, free of charge. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra opened the festival with a live performance.

Given the great success of the Rathausplatz Film Festival, the Vienna Mozart Music Film Festivals 2006 was organised in selected Eastern European cities as a kind of European urban project. The major cities of Prague (Czech Republic), Brno (Czech Republic), Bratislava (Slovakia), Zagreb (Croatia), Belgrade (Serbia), Warsaw (Poland), Ljubljana (Slovenia), and Bucharest (Romania) participated in showing outdoor movies. Every evening for a period of time during the summer months, a highly frequented square in each of these cities was turned into a large open-air cinema, screening music films with free admission. The majority of the music was by Mozart, but the programmes also included operas by other composers, and even musical theatre. An excellent selection of culinary specialties rounded off the programme.

For more than one week outdoor movies and music by the unforgettable genius captivated thousands of viewers on Bratislava’s main square in the old city. From a very early age Wolfgang “Amadé” Mozart was a much-travelled artist. As part of the Vienna Mozart Year 2006 the open air Film Festival, following the system successfully applied in front of Vienna City Hall, set out on a tour of nine central and east European cities. The Festival, which started in June in Brno, came to a festive closure on October 1st with outdoor movies in Zagreb.
