Sanford, North Carolina: Outdoor Movies at Sanford's "Screen on the Green"

Outdoor Movies in Sanford, North CarolinaI showed up at the first outdoor movie at Screen on the Green Friday night because I had to. Armed with a camera, I was only there to get a few photos of kids watching movies and head out before the opening credits were done. To me, it was just work … get the picture and go. But a funny thing happened Friday at the outdoor cinema at Depot Park, under a clear sky on a particularly warm spring night sitting with about 100 men, women and children in front of the giant inflatable movie screen … darn if I didn’t get a bit nostalgic.

The event – the first of what looks to be yet another successful Downtown Inc. summer outdoor film series – reminded me of when I was about 5-8 years old and my parents took us to the old drive-in theater in little Richmond, Ohio.

Yes, the drive-in. I’m sure some of you remember them. Car full of family, sandy lot lined with polls that hung those little metal speakers that cracked and popped throughout the flick (these days, you just tune in your radio to a low FM frequency to get the sound).

My parents would pack my brother, sister and I into the car, pop open the back hatch, and we’d lay there and watch “The Goonies,” “E.T.” or whatever else was playing in the early 80s. I remember on a return trip to visit my grandparents, we saw “Honey I Shrunk the Kids.”

I absolutely loved the drive-in … everything about it, and it’s been sad that I’ve not been able to live near another in my 30-plus years. I recently Googled drive-ins in , and while they’re nearly extinct, there are a few good ones left in our state. I hope to one day take my wife and family to one so they can get the same feeling from it that I did.

Until then … Screen on the Green outdoor movies in Sanford comes awfully close. It didn’t hurt that the weather was perfect Friday, and there were dozens of kids running around and playing up until the ants started bullying each other on screen (I assume that’s what the movie was about).

If you didn’t catch this one, I suggest you try the next outdoor film, especially if you have children.

Durham, North Carolina: Obama's Election Victory Projected on an Inflatable Screen

Obama's Election Victory Projected on an Inflatable ScreenThe following is an excerpt from “Obama”, by Olivia Hayes. Read it here: http://linguisticallysmitten.blogspot.com/2008/11/obama.html

On election night, we all piled into the center of downtown . It was rainy and muddy, so we hid out in The Pinhook for a while, drinking beer out of plastic cups and checking our Blackberries and iPhones for updates. Anna managed to find an Obama volunteer from San Francisco who we chattered with the whole evening, pondering the possibility of going blue. And at a certain point, the crowd outside got louder, watching a live feed on a giant inflatable screen.

We moved outside, boots sinking into the municipal mud just in time to see CNN declare that the McCain campaign “didn’t see a path to victory.” By the time they announced Obama the winner, we were arm and arm under the misting rain, dancing, hugging, laughing, cheering…Tears were shed, strangers were hugged, and the country had begun stitching up the wounds, inking tentative treaties with hand shakes.

I watched Obama’s speech wrapped in the arms of one of my best friends, a tear slipping down my cheek when he repeated his famous mantra. It broke the fever of discontent and cynicism incubated in the ranks of my generation for the past eight years. And that night was the first night that we could say, without rancor, without irony, that we were proud to be Americans.

Davidson, North Carolina: Die-Hard Outdoor Movie Fans are Undeterred by Chilly Weather in Davidson, North Carolina

Outdoor Movies in Davidson, North CarolinaWho else but super community-minded Karen Toney of , would plan one of her wonderful outdoor movies (”Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”) on the Summit Big Screen and have temperatures drop into the 20s?

It must have been a hex from Severus Snape trying her patience as well as that of Barbara Freund of Main Street Books and the six shivering die hard fans huddled in the parking lot.

Undeterred, Karen has simply switched gears and will have “Rock Band” Wednesdays (albeit inside) instead of outdoor movies at Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Shoppe on Main Street from 5-9 p.m. for the rest of fall. Instruction is available. Call 704-892-0604 for more details.

Fall Festival in Denver, North Carolina Features Outdoor Movies

Outdoor Movies in Denver, North CarolinaThe Days Fall Festival Planning Committee has announced they will be featuring outdoor movies in a nostalgic Drive-in and Cruise-in, to be held on Thursday, Sept. 25.

Picture a 1950s-style drive-in movie theater complete with classic cars. The outdoor movie show will include a “family friendly” film projected on a large inflatable movie screen. No drive-in movie would be complete without those old-time dancing hotdog commercials, so prepare to go back in time! The event will be held on the Denver Days Fall Festival grounds on Hwy 16, behind Century 21 Hecht Realty. As in previous years, the festival will also host Student Fun Night Thursday in the amusement area. The amusement rides will be accessible to all attendees and will provide a festive background while not disturbing our movie goers.

Festival gates will open at 5 pm on Thursday and parking is $5 per car. Movies will begin at nightfall, at approximately 7:30 pm. Attendees should bring their own lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the evening, similar to the festival’s concert nights.

With the help of modern technology, including a high resolution digital projector, powerful audio speaker system and local area FM broadcast equipment to enable visitors to tune in to the show on their car radio, we’ll transform the fairgrounds into an old-fashion drive-in movie theater.

To add to the atmosphere of the evening a classic car cruise-in is being organized; classic cars and hot rods will park “drive-in movie style” in front of the big screen. Visitors don’t have to have an old car to get in on the fun though; everyone is welcome! Non-classic cars will park in the regular festival parking area and visitors can bring their lawn chairs and blankets to sit in front of the classic cars and hot rods for a great view of the big screen. To further add to the atmosphere a family friendly outdoor movie will be shown complete with cartoons to start, and those campy old intermission film clips just like the good old days! Before the movie there’ll be music and dancing along with the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful cars and the exciting assortment of amusement rides.

With the old cars, Drive-in Theater, Popcorn & concessions, amusement rides, music, dancing, and more… it’s guaranteed to be a fun evening with a big crowd.

In the Denver Days spirit of serving the community the Denver Days Cruise-In Drive-In Movie Night will benefit a worthy cause. Because the event features beautiful old cars and hot-rods it is fitting that we have teamed up with National Drag Race Champion and local businessman Doug Herbert, to support his BRAKES program.” The BRAKES program, which stands for “Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe”, promotes safe and responsible driving to young drivers and their parents. The organization’s goal is to save lives and keep children safe.

“We wanted to provide a festive and nostalgic family night that complements our regular Student Fun Night amusement rides”, said Doug Rohr, Denver Days planning committee”.

Second Outdoor Movie Celebrates Football in Benson, North Carolina

Outdoor Movies in Benson, North CarolinaNow that football season is underway, pigskin stories will be swapped over dinner tables and door steps across the country. Area residents hoping to cap the weekend off with a sports tale can head to the Singing Grove in for an outdoor movie showing of “Remember the Titans” Sunday night.

The second film in the inaugural season for the Singing Grove Cinema is sure to be a crowd favorite. Last month’s showing of “Shrek the Third” drew an estimated 175 people. Ben Murphrey, Benson’s downtown development coordinator, said it was a great turnout for the first event.

The movie, shown on the town’s inflatable 16-foot wide screen, is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., but is dependent on the sunset. This weekend, a trivia game will entertain guests waiting for the show to start.

Admission is free. Concessions will be available for sale at the park. While the Singing Grove has plenty of space, seating is limited so guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. In case of inclement weather, the movie will be shown at the W.J. Barefoot Auditorium in the municipal building.

Raleigh, North Carolina: Outdoor Movies Mark Triangle Summer

Summer in means plenty of outdoor fun. When the sun goes down, towns across the Triangle roll out low-cost movies and concerts to entertain all ages.

In ’s North Hills, we found the sound of the beach on a Thursday evening. At American Tobacco Campus in , musicians pounded the bongos. Most concerts around the area are free and kid-friendly.

The North Carolina Museum of Art offers a series of outdoor movies in a variety of genres with admission just $3. Museum directors try and chose titles with artistic merit, though that doesn’t mean the films aren’t entertaining and fun.

Jasmine Gardiner and Heather Willoughby liked the price and the venue. “There’s something about being in the city, being able to go watch a movie outside on a huge screen,” Gardiner said.

The outdoor movies are shown Friday and Saturday nights, weather permitting, through the end of September.
