Dundalk, Maryland: Outdoor Movies Reach Out to Dundalk Community

Saturday marks the commencement of the Main Street Outdoor Movie Series, a project the Renaissance Corp. started last year.

“It’s a community-building strategy,” said Amy Menzer, executive director of the DRC. “People don’t need to go to White Marsh to go to the movies.”

The summer open air movie series has expanded from last year’s three films (one of which was rained out) to six. The DRC purchased its own 4,500-foot Lumen projector and an 11.6-by-19.8-foot screen to have for future use.

The outdoor movies will be shown in the parking lot behind the Patapsco Masonic Lodge on Trading Place, directly across from Heritage Park, where they were viewed last year.

“We rented the sound equipment from Dundalk Music right here on Main Street. This way, we are supporting local businesses,” said Main Street manager Jordan Hadfield.

The idea for the open air cinema series arose from a monthly Promotion Committee Meeting held by the DRC. Citizens wrote down several ideas for community events, and the outdoor movie series was born.

Menzer sees the outdoor movies as potentially beneficial to current and prospective residents of Dundalk. “It makes for a more attractive place to live and adds to the character of the community,” she said.

The series — with movies rated PG and PG13 — caters to families. The goal is “for children and families to be on Main Street after dark. We are creating memories for kids too,” said Hadfield.

The first open air movie in the series Shrek III (June 7) was selected by last years first audience. The Main Street Movie Committee chose My Fair Lady (June 21), Spider-Man III (July 12) and the 2007 version of Hairspray (July 26).

To involve more children in the community, the series will also feature two school-sponsored outdoor movie nights. Students from Dundalk Elementary selected Ratatouille (Aug. 9), and students from Logan Elementary chose Bee Movie (Aug. 23).

Hadfield said the DRC made some improvements since last year. The committee will introduce pre-show entertainment that begins at 7:30 p.m and runs until dark, including live music, face painting, balloon animals and karaoke.

Part of the funding for the open air movies comes the Baltimore County-backed Rediscover Campaign. The DRC also subsidizes the costs with an advertisement trailer before the outdoor screening.

Several local businesses have donated items for raffles, and the DRC is negotiating with nearby restaurants to arrange for food delivery during the movie showings. The DRC is also using the outdoor movie series to attract people interested in bringing a wider range of retail stores to Main Street.

Menzer said if the community is going to make the businesses that already exist on Main Street more viable and bring in future businesses, it needs to entice non-locals.

“The more we get people coming here, they’ll see that there is stuff here,” she said.

Open Air Cinema Brings Outdoor Movies to Burning Man

You can find anything and everything at Burning Man: glow in the dark banana cars, rolling brains, semi-truck art, and now inflatable movie screens. Yup. We did Burning Man this year, and it was — well, lets just say now we know that an Open Air screen can withstand anything Mother Nature can conjure up.

We hauled a 40-foot screen to the venue, a dry (and we mean DRY) riverbed over 100 miles from Reno, . And for good measure packed in a line array sound system just to be sure that Burners for miles around could hear us.

For two consecutive days the intense desert heat beat down on Open Air screen, with no ill-effect. That was easy. And then – out of nowhere – the duststorm, and accompanying 80 mph winds. Fortunately because the stakes had been pounded deep into the riverbed they did a great job of holding the screen in place until we could man the two back ropes. The screen simply folded in the middle making it much easier to hold down. We simply waited out the storm, and easily reinflated the screen with plenty of time for the next film screening. No damage done.

Open Air Cinema is looking forward to seeing what the ‘Man’ can throw our way next year.

Giant Outdoor Movie Screens in Peru, Illinois

Inflatable movie screen grows to 26 feet high, 40 feet long in about 12 minutes

Several cars slowed down Friday afternoon in Centennial Park to watch a giant black mass grow from the ground.

One moment it was just a flat piece of plastic. However, in just minutes – 12 minutes to be exact – a huge black and white screen dwarfing trees was standing erect.

The Parks and Recreation District rented the movie screen for a Friday showing of “Matilda.” Nearing dusk, families and even a few couples on dates brought lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the cool summer night at the screening, run by a local family-owned business.

“It’s cool. I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Mary Hammerich of Peru, who brought her 7-year-old daughter Taylor. “It’s just like years ago at the old drive-in.”

LaSalle-Peru residents Brian and Carrie Brown are fans of drive-in movies, too. They grew up when outdoor cinemas were popular. They now own Sunset Cinemas Inc., renting and operating inflatable movie screens, which bring the old drive-in movie atmosphere to any open area.

The Browns and their three children started in the movie business just about a year ago, and already it’s paying off.

“We’ve been booked solid,” Carrie Brown said, estimating the company will have done about 60 events by October.

She said the whole idea originated about 10 years ago when her husband, Brian, saw a group in Washington, D.C., enjoying an outdoor flick. Brian, an engineer, then started studying how it would be possible to bring that kind of entertainment on the road.

The couple then found a company in that sold the inflatable screens, and the Browns knew they had something special. They showed their first movie in April and have been busy ever since.

They have two screens. The super-screen, with a projection area 40 feet long and about 23 feet high, was used at Peru’s event. Carrie Brown said the screen is large enough for about 4,000 people to watch comfortably.

Though it looks massive, it can be deflated in seconds. Carrie Brown said that was one of the reasons they chose the screens.

“They’re very safe,” Carrie Brown said.

The other screen is 16 feet wide and about 9 feet tall and is usually used for schools and private or indoor functions.

Carrie Brown said she’s looked for other portable movie screen companies in the area but could only find one in southern and one in the Chicago suburbs.

The family travels all over the Midwest projecting movies for clients, mostly family-friendly pictures rated G, PG or PG-13. The movie choice is up to the client, but it must be licensed to be shown in a public place.

More information is available by calling (815) 224-2991 or visiting the Web site at www.moviesatsunset.com.

Carrie Brown said the experience is fun for the whole family, which rang true Friday night.

Peru resident Kathy Pyszka and her family were among the moviegoers, and she had only one regret.

“I’m just sorry they didn’t start this earlier in the summer,” said Kathy Pyszka.

LA Film Festival

Open Air Cinema was pleased to produce the outdoor screenings at the LA Film Festival. Audiences packed the open air venues to enjoy the screening of “The Filth and the Fury” a documentary about The Sex Pistols, “West Side Story,” and “The Incredibles.” More info below about the festival:

An interesting fact about the setup at one of the venues: a different outdoor screen was used the night before one of Open Air Cinema’s productions. It took 6 of their staff members 2.5 hours to install a 30ft. wide screen. The next night we got involved and it took 2 staff members less than 30 minutes to fully setup and secure a 40ft. wide screen! In terms of screens, they’re not looking back! Inflatable screens really are the best solution!

WHAT IS THE FILM FESTIVAL
