Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movie: Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”

Our first film on our Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movies is Tim Burton’s celebrated animation, “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.  The film was initially conceived as a poem by Burton while he was working for Disney in the 1980′s, but wasn’t considered for a major motion picture until almost ten years later.  Burton is acclaimed by both critics and the public alike, and this past year had his retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Ciy.  His work can be appreciated for its filmic and artistic qualities – which makes The Nightmare Before Christmas the perfect selection for your Halloween Party outdoor movie!  Here is the theatrical release trailer for the film:

The Nightmare Before Christmas is set in Halloween Town, the magical place where Halloween is planned and undertaken. Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), is the pumpkin king and leader of the town, and is frustrated with Halloween.  He solemnly wonders what the point of it all is, and goes on a walk with his ghost dog Zero (that has a lighted pumpkin nose).  He discovers some doors that lead to the magical worlds of other holidays where he discovers Christmas!  Jack is totally taken away, and desires to bring the spirit of Christmas to Halloween Town.

outdoor moviesHowever, when Jack gets home and tries to explain Christmas to his people, he isn’t able to give them the essence of the holiday.  Jack sets out to capture the Christmas spirit, and eventually to steal Christmas from Christmas Town!  Through the production of scary presents, the kidnapping of Santa Claus, and the staging of a new Christmas, Jack and his townspeople wreak havoc upon a world used to a certain way of doing things.  The Nightmare Before Christmas is a fun musical stop-motion animation about community, desires that are common to all of us, and true love. The film is a perfect pick for the entire family, or for your entire community! It will no-doubt entertain the children in your community, but it will also fascinate parents and individuals of any age!

outdoor moviesThe Nightmare Before Christmas is a great choice for your Halloween Party or Fall community Outdoor Movie! You could invite your community to come dressed in their costumes, and invite them to sing-along with Jack and his friends! Another great opportunity would be to have a haunted-house for children (not too scary of course), and Halloween themed concessions and classic games. Your event will certainly be the place to go this Halloween, and at the centerpiece of the evening will be a movie loved by all- The Nightmare Before Christmas!

If anyone is planning on screening The Nightmare Before Christmas at your Halloween event this year, please send us your images, or post them to the comments section below.  We’d really love to see how your event turned out!  Happy haunting!

Top 5 Fourth of July Outdoor Movie Ideas

One of our favorite holidays as outdoor movie enthusiasts is the Fourth of July! There is no better time to pull out your Cinebox System and watch a movie under the stars! The Fourth is about celebrating our country’s independence with family and friends, and spending time together has come to be one of the most important aspects Independence Day.

After watching the fireworks at your nearby community park, it is a perfect time to enjoy an outdoor movie with family and friends. The summer evenings are cool and comfortable, and the kids are often out of school the next day. So if the time is perfect to watch an outdoor movie, what flick is the best for the holiday event? We thought we’d assemble a list of a few movies in case you can’t decide what film will make this night memorable for everyone:

This is America, Charlie Brown
This fun movie for the entire family features the favorite comic strip character Charlie Brown in this 8 part miniseries that focuses on historical events in our nation. The movie is no longer manufactured, but can be found on ebay or amazon! This is a pick that is appropriate for all ages, and would be a great choice for a young family with small children.

The Crossing
This Peabody Award winning film starring Jeff Daniels tells the story of how General George Washington made a significant offensive move that turned the tables in the revolutionary war. This is a great movie for the entire family, and will help everyone remember why we are free! The movie has a PG rating.

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
This film based on the Pulitzer Prize winning classic novel by Hector Lee stars Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, a white lawyer in the South who defends a black man accused of raping a white woman. Against great adversity, Atticus chooses what is morally right as he defends the truth and equality for all. The film won 3 Oscars and a number of other awards, and is heralded by some as being one of the most memorable films of the 20th Century. Although the film does not have a rating, it might not be for small children as it deals with difficult and complex scenarios that might be hard to understand. It also would not be the most entertaining movie for children. We’d suggest it for an older audience or family who would appreciate the significance of the film’s values and testimony to what makes America a great nation!

The Patriot
This film starring Mel Gibson is a fictional story based on the American Revolution. The Patriot is a large film that is packed with historical details, and will remind you and your audience of the sacrifices made by the founding fathers and members of our great country. Mel Gibson delivers a stellar performance as he portrays a humble American militiaman who fights against the British. The Patriot is rated R, and has some very violent moments, so is not for young children. Make sure you’ve seen the film before deciding whether or not to screen it with your family. It would make an excellent choice as a date-night holiday film!

Independence Day
Set in City, this action packed movie starring Will Smith will surely keep the holiday spirit, as Smith defends the earth from an alien attack, uniting all humanity in an epic struggle against life forms who wish to destroy planet earth. Independence Day is rated PG-13, and there are some moments that might not be suitable for young children, so make sure to watch the movie before deciding whether or not it is appropriate for your family or community.

Top 25 Outdoor Movie: Crocodile Dundee

Crocodile Dundee, is the next film on the Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time . This movie is a great pick for your next outdoor movie or backyard cinema screening, but before we get into any details, here’s the theatrical release trailer for the film:

Crocodile Dundee begins with Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), a Newsweek Reporter, who is on a search for the legendary man of the outback Micheal J. “Crocodile” Dundee (Paul Hogan). She has heard a number of fantastic stories about “Mick”, but soon finds out that many of them are exaggerated tall tales. However, Mick is afforded several opportunities to show off his outback skills, and saves Sue from a close encounter with a crocodile. As she wraps up her story, she invites Mick back to , and he decides to go with her. He is soon in a a foreign landscape, and he awkwardly (and comically) shows his naiveté in relation to modern life when he asks his African American taxi driver what tribe he is from, washes his clothes in a bath, among several other hilarious experiences. The movie is a great comedy that will entertain the entire community, as well as bring back a bit of nostalgia from the mid 80′s.

The most important reason why this film deserves a spot on our Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time list is because this film is loved by so many people, that it is sure to be a success in every community. In fact, the movie was created at a budget of under $10 million, because it was only meant for American audiences, but it quickly became a worldwide phenomenon- and ultimately became the highest grossing box-office movie in 1986! Make sure however, to keep your audience in mind with Crocodile Dundee.

The film is not for young children, and is rated PG-13 for several suggestive scenes, and adult humor. It would make a really great pick as a date night or college film, or depending on your community, you may want to screen it to the entire community, but just make sure that your community members understand what their kids will be watching. All in all, Crocodile Dundee is a must for the perfect outdoor movie season.

Has anyone screened this film as an outdoor movie? Email us your story to community@openaircinema.us and we’ll share it on our blog!

Top 25 Outdoor Movie: Wall-E

For our next Top 25 Outdoor Movie, we’re reviewing WALL-E, the hit animation from Disney / Pixar that will entertain every member of your community, both old and young. But as usual, here is the official trailer for the film:

WALL-E is a story about a little robot WALL-E (acronym for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class), who’s job is to clean up all the junk that humans have left behind after leaving planet earth. He is the last robot left on earth (as far as we can tell), and goes about his programmed duty of cleaning up and compacting trash. But one day he runs into another robot, named EVE, who is sent to earth to find any remaining plant life. WALL-E takes EVE back to his home to show her around, and she detects a plant that WALL-E recently found. She then turns into auto-mode, and waits for her mother ship to come back and retrieve her and the living plant. Once the mother ship comes, WALL-E clings on for dear life, and is taken to Axiom, the flagship of the BnL starliner fleet, and the place where humans now reside. EVE and WALL-E are then taken on a supensful yet fun ride as they try to save humanity by getting the human race back to earth.

WALL-E will make a great outdoor movie as it is filled with funny episodes that will make everyone laugh, as well as tender moments that make one reflect on our responsibility over keeping the planet clean. The film one an Oscar for the “Best Animated Feature Film of the Year“, and no-doubt, it deserved it. Again, as with any animation, WALL-E will project bright and crisp as it is high in contrast, with loud, crisp sound – all of which make it a great pick for your next outdoor movie. And even though many of your community members may have already seen this film a number of times, WALL-E will bring the crowd out. One way to encourage community members to come out for your screening is to emphasize the size of the screen. Let them know the image will be huge, and that it is just like seeing the film in the theaters again!

Another idea is to have a robot costume contest before the show! You’ll be surprised at how many people will come out in costume to try to win prizes from your local businesses. This makes the outdoor movie event fun and exciting, and will add to the experience in a way that will make it unique and memorable.

Again, as with all Disney Movies, remember to make sure you check with Swank Motion Pictures about the special circumstances in screening Disney films. Top 25 Outdoor Movie: Monsters Inc.

Monsters Inc. is next on our list of Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time. The animated film from Pixar Animation, although released in 2001, is already a classic film that brings joy and entertainment to families everywhere. Before we talk more about why this is a great pick for your next outdoor movie screening, or backyard cinema event, check out this clip from the film:

The story follows several monsters that have the occupation of scaring human children in order to get their scream energy, because human screams power the city where the monsters live (Monstropolis). Two monsters named Sully (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) accidentally let a small girl into Monstropolis, and try to quickly return her back to her room, only to run into one obstacle after another. The result is an entertaining yet smart and well directed story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

There are a couple things that really make Monsters Inc. an awesome pick for upcoming outdoor movie event. First, the film is of course loved by kids, but also has some really funny parts for the rest of the family. In other words, no one will be bored watching this movie, and the more audience members, the better. The movie is sure to draw a crowd. Even though most of your community members have probably seen this film dozens of times, Monsters Inc. is guaranteed to make your event a success.

Technically, the film makes a great choice, as it is high in contrast with bright colors. In other words, the image will appear brighter and cleaner than your average film because of these qualities. It will make your event producer’s night go that much smoother, and if you have a little bit of peripheral light, you’ll still be okay. Also, the soundtrack is bold and loud, and will easily be heard by everyone. Sometimes certain films will swing up and down from being too quiet or too loud, but with Monsters inc, you’ll be good to go the entire time.

Last of all, make sure you check with Swank Motion Pictures about the special circumstances in screening Disney films. There are specific dates set aside when you can screen Disney films, so make sure to check ahead to see what the dates are for 2010. With the right planning, you’ll be able to screen your favorite Disney film with no problems. Click here to see the link for Monsters Inc. on Swank’s website.

Has anyone recently screened Monsters Inc. as an outdoor movie event? We’d love to hear your story, and see the images from the screening! Send us an email to community@openaircinema.us, and we’ll pass your story on to the rest of the readers here at the blog. Thanks for reading!

Iron Man 2, A Must-Have For Outdoor Cinema

In a follow-up to our previous post from earlier this week, and post-Iron Man 2-screening, we have to say we are more excited than ever about seeing this film as an outdoor movie! Iron Man 2 certainly delivered, and we have to agree with A.O. Scott’s NY Times review on one point: although IM2 neglected to follow in the solemn footsteps of recent Batman or Spiderman blockbusters, it was certainly funny, even enjoyably so.

That is probably what we enjoyed the most – the comic relief brilliantly interspersed throughout the narrative. Witty remarks laced with pop-culture references made the film appreciable to an older audience. When Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) turns his company over to his assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), he cracks open a bottle of champagne and urges Potts to “drink, not think”.

Iron Man 2 does not leave you un-wowed, as the special effects take the saga to an entirely new level. This Times article details
how the film commissioned Rolls-Royce to construct two identical vehicles for the movie (apparently the only twin RR autos in the company’s history at a price tag of $438K), only to be destroyed for an exhilarating scene where Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) and Stark duke it out as freshly formed enemies. But it doesn’t end there, as the entire film is spotted with believable and breathtaking special effects that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson deliver excellent performances as Justin Hammer -the CEO of Hammer industries, Stark’s chief competitor- and Natalie Rushman -Stark’s new personal assistant. In fact, the movie is filled with brilliant performers, all who act between the lines and significantly assist in making the film a success. Robert Downey Jr. shines as Tony Stark, especially as Mr. Stark re-discovers his purpose amidst chaos and identity crisis.

We give Iron Man 2 an outdoor-movie rating of four and a half stars, as the film will be an excellent pick for almost any community. It offers something for every member of the family (with the exception of small children), and is entertaining and substantial without being too long or drawn out. Most of the film is bright and high in contrast, and should project well in almost any outdoor movie setting.

Have any readers seen Iron Man 2? What did you think of the film, and of it’s potential as an outdoor movie? We’d love to hear your thoughts, so please, post a comment to the blog, or send us a message at community@openaircinema.us.

New York City, New York: A Retrospective of Video Artist's Work on MTV's Outdoor Screen through February

At 44 1/2, Creative Time’s presentation of video art on MTV’s outdoor, gilded screen located in the heart of ’s Times Square, will showcase the work of legendary artist Bruce Conner (1933-2008) in a mini-retrospective from February 1-28, 2010.

Bruce Conner has influenced generations of artists, and his oeuvre spans more than 50 years. Creative Time will present three of his film works At 44 1/2 from the early years of his output to the year of his death: TEN SECOND FILM (1965), CROSSROADS (1976), and EASTER MORNING (2008).

“For years we have dreamt of showing the films of Bruce Conner,” said Anne Pasternak, president and artistic director of Creative Time, “an artist who has been enormously influential to so many other artists and whose videos have done so much to shape video art, independent film, and music videos as we know it. And what could be a more interesting place to show a short survey of his emotionally charged and visually stunning works than in the heart of popular culture, Times Square?”

TEN SECOND FILM
1965, 16mm, b&w/silent, 10 seconds

Bruce Conner’s TEN SECOND FILM was commissioned by the 1965 Film Festival, and Conner intended for it to act as a television commercial and a prelude for the film programs in the theater. It is comprised of just ten film strips, each 24 frames long, of “countdown leader”—the universal cinematic signifier that announces the imminent start of a film, causing a hush to fall across the audience as it tics off the final, suspenseful seconds. With his agile re-editing, Conner manages to heighten the energy and exhilaration of this now-obsolete convention. This fervency was lost on the festival, however, which rejected the film for being “too fast.” It seems only fitting that TEN SECOND FILM ushers in this series of Conner’s work, shown on a screen of cinematic proportions amongst the breakneck speed of Times Square.

CROSSROADS
1976, 35mm, b&w/sound, 36 minutes
Original music by Patrick Gleeson and Terry Riley

On July 25, 1946, “Operation Crossroads” detonated Baker, the first underwater atomic bomb test, 90 feet under Bikini Atoll. The bomb forever altered the course of human events and it yielded a horrific vision of the apocalypse documented by 500 cameras on ships, on land, and in the air. Conner’s editing and composition of 27 individual shots from declassified U.S. Government footage of this event from the National Archives transforms nuclear holocaust into hypnotic abstraction, rendering a real-world tragedy amidst the corporate pitch of Times Square.

EASTER MORNING
2008, 8mm/Digital, color/sound, 10 minutes
Music: “In C” by Terry Riley

Departing from an inimitable film repertoire of tour-de-force editing technique, visual comedy, and apocalyptic themes, avant-garde master Bruce Conner envisioned EASTER MORNING (2008)—a metaphysical quest for renewal beyond the natural and ephemeral worlds—to be his last finished masterpiece. Keeping with his ritualistic reworking and re- imagining of his films, the image source originates from the 8mm Kodachrome footage of EASTER MORNING RAGA (1966), expanded in duration, gauge, and frame rate to devise an effect of visual transcendence. EASTER MORNING celebrates Conner’s reverence for experiential cinema, aleatoric sound, and discoveries within the realm of the spirit. EASTER MORNING will be screened At 44 1/2 concurrently in a solo show of Conner’s work at Susan Inglett Gallery, NY, opening January 28.

Creative Time kicked off At 44 1/2 with the overwhelmingly successful presentation of Shallow by Malcolm McLaren in June 2008, and was followed by selections from Mark Tribe’s Port Huron Project; early work by the legendary Gilbert & George; a series curated by artist Marilyn Minter; the work of acclaimed artist Steve McQueen; and two series by young artists.

The larger than life, high definition 44 1/2 screen is located on Broadway between 44th and 45th Streets, directly across the street from MTV’s offices and studio. At 44 1/2 is part of Creative Time’s long history of presenting public art in Times Square.

Bruce Conner (1933-2008) was born in Kansas but spent most of his active career in San Francisco, . Conner worked in multiple mediums and often combined collage, prints, tapestries, and film in a single piece. He was one of the first to fuse popular music and video and collaborated in his later career with several musicians including Terry Riley and David Byrne. He often incorporated found footage into his films as a way of dealing with media and its effects on culture and society as a subject.
