When Ariel Zylbersztejn founded Cinepop, which organizes free outdoor film screenings for people living in rural , he didn’t consider himself a “social entrepreneur.” After studying mass communication and film, he says he simply realized he needed a creative way to solve a social problem. Outdoor movies, he discovered, was the solution. “Because the price of a movie ticket is often 20 percent of a family’s monthly income, 90 percent of the Mexican population doesn’t have access to the movies,” says Zylbersztejn, 27. “We began by acting as a bridge between corporations from the big cities and low-income families in rural communities. Along the way, I discovered the huge impact we could have in one event.”

After a successful outdoor movie screening in 2004, Cinepop shows more than one film a week in Mexico, reaching upwards of 350,000 people a year. The showings are occasions to promote social programs, like free or low-cost medical consultations and education on self-employment. “At one show, we were able to start 250 lines of microcredit for those wanting to start a business or in need of working capital,” says Zylbersztejn. “By bringing a lot of people to the same place, we’ve found we can do many different things.”

Leaders of organizations in and are interested in starting their own branches of Cinepop, so Zylbersztejn sees huge potential for his business. But he’s adamant about getting the outdoor cinema formula right before expanding to other parts of the world. “Our audiences trust us,” he says. “We have to be very cautious about what we offer them and how we partner with companies. It’s a huge responsibility. People are learning a lot from what we are doing, and it’s inspiring them to start social enterprises. We hope that we and others can do something good for the world.”

Outdoor Movies in Guanajuato, MexicoThe Expresión en Corto International Film Festival is an annual international film festival, held since 1997 during the final week of July in the cities of San Miguel de Allende and , , . It is famous for its varied settings for outdoor movie screenings.

As a state-sponsored, non-profit organization and cultural event that does not charge admission to its viewing audience, the festival estimates an attendance of over 77,000 total audience members and receives over 1,500 works from more than 88 participating countries in its international competition. It presents a variety of films, conferences, workshops, outdoor movie screenings, tributes and activities at no cost to the visiting public.

More than 400 films are screened from 10am until 4am each day in 18 venues, which include outdoor movies in such unusual locations as: the Jardín Principal (main square) of San Miguel de Allende; the classical open-air staircase of the University of Guanajuato; the subterranean streets and tunnels beneath the city of Guanajuato where underground films are screened; as well as horror films in the infamous Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato and both municipal graveyards (panteónes). There are also screenings in more conventional spaces such as Teatro Angela Peralta (SMA), Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramirez – El Nigromante (SMA), the Teatro Santa Ana (SMA), Hotel Villa Jacaranda (SMA), Galería Kunsthaus Santa Fe (SMA), the Auditorio del Estado (GTO) and the Teatro Principal (GTO).

Movies with Mummy

From the stroke of midnight onward, both San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato City open their graveyards for the outdoor movie series “Cine de Terror”, where horror films are screened among the tombstones, the mausoleums and the dead. The appropriately dubbed “Movies with Mummy”, screens horror films in Guanajuato’s infamous Museo de las Momias.

Midnight Madness

Galeria Kunsthaus Santa Fe in San Miguel de Allende and the subterranean streets and tunnels beneath Guanajuato City are converted into make-shift theaters for outdoor movies in a celebration of sexual diversity called “Midnight Madness”, which includes gay, lesbian, transgender and erotic films.
