Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movie: Session 9

As we begin to wrap up our Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movies list, we’d like to review Session 9, the 2001 Horror film that is considered by many to be one of the scariest movies ever. Although not appropriate for young children (due to the sheer scariness of the film), Session 9 is the perfect selection for your Halloween outdoor movie screen party! Here is the theatrical release trailer for the film:

We need to reiterate something. This movie is really scary! We recently screened it on our OAC outdoor screen, and couldn’t have been more scared. Session 9 is set in the abandoned State Hospital in , and was filmed on-site in the historic structure. An asbestos removal company has been contracted to clean up the State Hospital, but as they begin to work, they discover dark history in the objects left behind. Then, when one of the workers disappears, the crew is increasingly spooked. Session 9 continues in a psychological narrative that will truly scare your audience!

Session 9There are some really great things you can do to make your outdoor inflatable screen event special and memorable. Many towns have abandoned old mental institutions near them (here’s a link to historic Kirkbride Plan mental institutions), and setting up your OAC Home system next to an old, dark building will totally heighten the scare factor!

Session 9Also, bringing refreshments and seating or cushioning will create a special experience for you and your guests. Hot apple cider and fresh sugar cookies are always welcome during Halloween! And most important, don’t forget to snap a picture of your setup, as you’ll want to remember all your hard work. You’ll be able to use the documentation to recruit more guests for your Halloween outdoor movie party next year!

If you are interested in investing in an Open Air Cinema outdoor movie system, contact us today! We’ll be in touch with you right away, and will help you find an outdoor movie screen and outdoor projector that fits your needs.

Happy Haunting!

Top 25 Halloween Outdoor Movie: Shutter Island (Leonardo DiCaprio)

Shutter Island, a 2010 film by Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio is next on our list of Top 25 Outdoor Halloween Movies. The film is based upon Dennis Lehane’s 2003 novel of the same name, and is a psychological thriller that will keep your guests on the edge of their seats! Here is the theatrical release trailer for the film:

U.S. Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are assigned to investigate the strange disappearance of Rachel Solando at the Ashecliff Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island located in Harbor. They begin working with Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), and quickly come face to face with the many fears and paranoia of the patients.

shutter islandDaniels begins to suspect a conspiracy on the island, as things aren’t quite adding up. Yet his several efforts to expose the mis-deeds of the doctors by leaving the island are thwarted by the hospital staff and natural phenomena. The rest of the film continues in a psychological thriller with twists and turns as exciting and original as any movie we’ve seen in a long time.

shutter islandShutter Island makes a perfect pick for your outdoor movie at your Halloween Party! The film is probably too intense for small children, but is the perfect selection if you want your friends to be genuinely scared! And if you want your audience to be extra scared, inflate your Open Air outdoor movie screen in a setting that will add to the psychological atmosphere of the film, such as in the woods, in or near an old abandoned building, or if you’re near the ocean, on the beach! Then, come prepared with Halloween treats for your audience to munch on, and you’ll have the perfect formula for a Halloween party that your friends will never forget! We’re willing to bet that outdoor movies will become an annual Halloween tradition, and the highlight of your celebration.

If anyone has screened Shutter Island as an outdoor movie, let us know how your event turned out by posting to the comments section below.  We’d love to hear about your experience!

Outdoor Movie Review: The Social Network

The upcoming film The Social Network will be opening in theaters on October 1.  The Social Network is directed by David Fincher and has a pretty great cast including the likes of Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Brenda Song, Rashida Jones, Max Minghella, Rooney Mara, Malese Jow, and Joseph Mazzello. Here is a pretty interesting trailer for the film:

The Social Network has garnered quite a bit of attention, as it focuses on the founding days of the social networking site Facebook.  The film portrays founder Mark Zuckerberg’s early years with Facebook, and accounts the tumultuous experiences that followed the explosive growth of the revolutionary website. Zuckerberg quickly made millions (and eventually billions), but initially was drawn through a series of legal battles that apparently (and ironically) staged him against his friends as many sought to bring his empire down.

We’ve heard and read some interesting reports that say there seems to be quite a bit of animosity from Zuckerberg and Facebook about the film, with little cooperation and support. It will no doubt be interesting to see how successful The Social Network is at the box office, and alternatively how the film affects public perception of the ever present Facebook. We’re excited that there are finally films being made that attempt to catalog the beginnings of the social networking era, as it has no-doubt been an important part of web (and general) history.

Once licensing is available, The Social Network will make a really great choice for your high-school or college campus outdoor movie event! Almost every kid uses Facebook on a daily basis, and so the screening of the film on your local campus will surely draw a big crowd, and will be a popular event that will show your students that you understand what they’re interested in.

Let us know what you think when you see the film – we’d love to hear what you have to say! Post your thoughts to the comment section below.

Braintree, Massachusetts: Three Free Outdoor Family Movie Nights in Braintree

Coming Soon in : Three Free Family Outdoor Movie Nights

Outdoor Movies in Braintree, MassachusettsBeginning on July 15, families in town are invited to three free outdoor movie nights at the high school Carson Soccer Field.

“Mayor (Joseph) Sullivan wanted to add some more to our already busy summer activities calendar, and we both felt that free family-friendly full length open air movie nights would be appreciated,” Director of Recreation and Community Events William Hedlund said.

The first open air movie night that is being sponsored by the Braintree Electric Light Department and its BELD Broadband division will feature the Disney release “Bolt” featuring the voices of John Travolta and Miley (“Hannah Montana”) Cyrus.

Next, “Shrek 2,” featuring the voices of Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy, will be shown on July 22 on the huge, inflatable movie screen with professional sound for literally hundreds to enjoy outdoors similar to the days of drive-in theatres, Hedlund said.

Pixar’s “Toy Story,” featuring the voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, will be shown on Aug. 4.

In each case, a rain date has been scheduled for the following evening.

Residents are asked to arrive early to get the best parking spots near the football stadium and bring lawn chairs or blankets to spread out to enjoy the outdoor movies.

It is suggested that families also bring mosquito repellents to use since each open air movie will begin at about 8:15 p.m. when mosquitoes can be annoying, Hedlund said.

No alcohol or smoking will be permitted on the high school grounds during the open air movies, and any family who brings a cooler onto the grounds will be subject to inspection by the show staff to ensure compliance with this policy.

A concession will be operated during the outdoor movies with soft drinks, candy, and other pre-packaged consumables, along with hot dogs, at the Buck-A-Buy stand to be operated by the town’s recreation summer staff.

“There will be sufficient room for hundreds of people to get a great viewing spot on the soccer field, and we hope that these events will give families another opportunity for some fun this summer in Braintree,” Sullivan said.

“With the concerts at Sunset Lake each Tuesday night and the three movie nights on two Wednesdays and one Tuesday as well, there will be ample family oriented entertainment this summer in Braintree,” Hedlund said. “The cost is right for all.”

Hull Village, Massachusetts: Fort Revere Park Offers Outdoor Movies in Hull Village, Massachusetts

When is the last time you watched an outdoor movie with your family — on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, your picnic blanket planted firmly on a patch of American history? Fort Revere Park, in , lets you do just that.

The Fort Revere Park and Preservation Society was established in the early ‘ 90 s as a nonprofit organization to support the park. The state Department of Conservation and Recreation and the society work in partnership to preserve the history and maintain the site.

Matt Tobin is the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s site supervisor for the fort. A history buff, he wears many hats: groundskeeper, graffiti exterminator (Tobin notes that the fort has had its share of troublemakers ), and event programmer.

In 2001 Tobin, who had enjoyed watching outdoor movies at the Memorial Hatch Shell in , made arrangements with the DCR to show the same movies at the fort.

“Most movies are second-run box office hits; all are family friendly. The movie truck pulls up in the middle of the field — families spread out their blankets and picnic baskets in front of the outdoor movie screen — and the preservation society sells drinks and snacks,” says Tobin.

“Fabulous Flicks at the Fort” begins Saturday and runs until Sept. 1. The outdoor movies begin at sundown and the titles remain a surprise until the film starts rolling. Veteran attendees know to bring blankets, chairs, a flashlight, and bug spray.

“By 1947, the military started to decommission most of the coastal defense systems,” says Tobin. The fort remained vacant for a long time, until the town decided to formally turn it into a park. “There was a big push in ’76, in concert with the bicentennial celebrations, for the town to restore the site,” says Tobin. That was when the amphitheaters were installed inside the batteries to accommodate the festivities being held in the park.

Hull has always been a destination spot, a summer colony, a respite from the humidity and concrete of Boston. Families have been arriving here — by carriage, steamboat, station wagon, and now hybrid — to take in the views, run their toes through the sand, and swim in the ocean. And now families can come for outdoor movies as well.

It’s not difficult to see why the population swells during the summer months. Locals know there’s more to Hull than Nantasket Avenue and the throngs of beachgoers that sprawl across the sand and congest the boardwalk from May to August.

For more information: www.mass.gov/ dcr/parks/metroboston/ftrevere.com or www.ftreverepark.org. The Officers Quarter Museum, operated by the Fort Revere Park & Preservation Society, is open for special events throughout the season and available to groups for educational or family functions.
