Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is the next movie on our list of the Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time. The film is an action packed adventure that will definitely bring out a big crowd in just about any community. But before we tell you why, here’s the theatrical release trailer:

The film is the third stop in the Indiana Jones saga, and begins with the young Indiana getting into a scuffle on a scout trip in Utah with some grave robbers after he steals a jeweled cross out from under them. He eventually gives it back, but the leader of the robbers gives Indiana his hat, something that Indiana will keep as his trademark (along with his whip). Then, we fast forward to the adult Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), who is told his father Henry (Sean Connery) mysteriously disappeared when doing research for the holy grail. Of course, Indiana begins to search for his father, and is led through a series of clues that takes him on a nonstop ride of classic Indiana Jones adventure as he encounters ancient relics, Nazi enemies, and enemies that are right under his nose.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a classic film that is entertaining in ways that contemporary adventure films can’t compete with. The film doesn’t rely too heavily on CGI graphics or massive explosions or violence, but rather on quick paced mystery and adventure that makes Indiana Jones unique. The film was a difficult one to make and included filming locations in Spain, Italy, England, and Jordan. The movie is PG-13, and we wouldn’t recommend it for small children, but would be great for teenagers and young adults, or for a date-night outdoor cinema event! It is also a great selection for school groups and colleges, and will bring out plenty of people. This is a great pick because many will not have seen the film for some time, and will come watch it under the stars for nostalgia’s sake!

As with many of the films on our Top 25 list, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a great selection in part for the possibilities it brings for pre-movie activities. You could have a look-alike Indiana Jones contest, with audience members voting on the best dressed and best posed contestant! You could even have a “holy grail”, or other faux-treasure for the winner, along with sponsored prized from your nearby local businesses. In fact, getting sponsors for your events is a great way to pay for movie licensing, equipment upgrade, and for staff support! It is a way for local businesses to show that they care about their community, and there is no better opportunity to get in front of thousands of their potential customers.

As usual, if anyone at all has shown this film as an outdoor movie, we’d love to see your images and hear your story! Send us a note at community@openaircinema.us, and we’ll share your story with the global outdoor cinema community!

For our next Top 25 Outdoor Movie, Life is Beautiful (La vita è bella), a triple Oscar winning film, follows the story of an Italian Jewish man (who has a very funny persona) and his experience of falling in love with the woman of his dreams, only to experience the horror of the holocaust with his young son and wife.

But it is Guido’s (played by Roberto Benigni, also the film’s director) humor and optimism that keeps his young son and wife hopeful as they face the tragic experiences of the war in a Nazi death camp. As Guido works in the camp, he makes up a game whereby his son can earn points towards winning a tank- but really instructs his son to do certain things in order to keep out of danger.

The film is moving on many levels, and makes a great outdoor movie, especially for teenage audiences and up. We’ve listed it in our “date night” section, as it is best for teenage audiences and up. Back in 2008, we screened the film at the Bridal Veil Film Festival, and we got a really great turnout from our local community. Life is Beautiful is a favorite film of many, and you’ll certainly get a big audience and a great response if you choose to screen this at your next Outdoor Movie screening.

Life is Beautiful will have you laughing and crying, as you experience this phenomenal film. Has anyone else shown this movie in their community? If so, tell us your story! Did your audience enjoy the film? Would you recommend that others also screen it to their communities? We look forward to hearing what you have to say, and posting your responses to this blog.

The outdoor movie projections start at 9.10 pm and last until full night; open air screenings rise in the Arena “Parco del Poggio” (Hill Park), the fabulous and picturesque site near Capodimonte Area in Naples / Napoli NA Italy.
It’s a special delight in order to enjoy cinema beneath the stars on warm summer nights in an amphitheatre equipped with one of the widest projection screens in Italy which rises having an artificial lake all around. These events really make people revive the movies each night of the Festival!

The Regina Isabella Hotel is set to host a constellation of Hollywood stars this July, with the 7th Ischia Global Film & Music Festival in town from July 12th.

Hollywood’s elite will converge upon Ischia, a beautiful Italian island in the Bay of Naples, for the event – which will this year be chaired by multiple Academy Award winner Paul Haggis.

“I’m proud of the chairmanship, which I assume with much respect towards Italian cinema and its traditions,” said Mr Haggis, whose major film credits include Crash, Million Dollar Baby, Flags of our Fathers and Casino Royale.

This truly original awards ceremony has previously been attended by the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, Naomi Watts, Val Kilmer, Dennis Hopper, Diane Kruger, Joseph Fiennes, Brenda Blethyn Gerard Butler, Jean-Claude Van Damme and music legends Burt Bacharach and Harry Belafonte.

With the 2009 event being led by Paul Haggis, it is certain that a wealth high profile guests will be in attendance this year.

Regina Isabella is located in a pretty bay near the town of Lacco Ameno, with the majority of films being watched al fresco from across a small natural lagoon.

This year, Ischia Global Film & Music Festival will showcase international productions, promoting the Old Continent and South African cinema in the global market.

Guests can spend their days soaking up the sun before enjoying an aperitif and the best of South African, Hollywood and European cinema.

All film screenings are free with more information here.

When Deborah Young took over as executive director of the Taormina Film Festival three years ago, she knew it had little chance of competing with such well-established, deep-pocketed behemoths as the Festival de Cannes, Sundance and Toronto as a top film marketplace. If the festival hoped to capture Hollywood’s attention, it would have to exploit its beauty by publicizing the wonders of its showcase outdoor cinema, the Teatro Greco (Greek Theater), a 2,000-year-old amphitheater overlooking the Ionian Sea: a perfect venue for outdoor movie screenings for the film festival.

“They put up this huge screen and you see the volcano (Mount Etna) in the background and the sparkling lava, with the moon and the sea,” says Silvia Bizio, a Los Angeles-based correspondent for the Italian newspaper La Repubblica who serves as a consultant for the outdoor film festival.

“The effect is extraordinary,” Young adds. After director Michael Bay watched his action blockbuster “Transformers” unspool at the Greek outdoor cinema in 2007, “(He) told us it was the best screening of his life.”

Director Norman Jewison echoes the sentiments. He describes the screening of his 1973 film “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Greek Theater in 2000 as “the most incredible experience.” “Everybody was lighting candles and dancing in the aisles,” he says. “It got standing ovations. And I think it was really the venue and the fact that we were under the stars and that moon.”

In February, Young, who also is The Hollywood Reporter’s chief international film critic, flew to Los Angeles and made the rounds of the studio marketing departments with Bizio, selling them on the idea of using the 55th edition of Taormina as an international launching pad to rollout their big summer films. They showed them photos of the spectacular venues and told of its glory days in the 1960s, when it was the most glamorous festival in the world alongside Venice and Cannes.

“It was a famous vacation destination in the ’50s and ’60s,” Bizio says. “It has a beautiful sea and there are a lot of amazing five-star hotels. But not many people think of it as a possible junket location, and that’s one of the things we’ve been trying to change.”

Young added extra sizzle to the sales pitch with the announcement that Taormina would be expanding across the island of Sicily this year, with open-air screenings in three other spectacular locales. In the town of Palma di Montechiaro, films will be projected on a big screen set up in the Piazza Santa Rosalia while guests watch from their seats on the giant staircase leading up the Chiesa Madre (Mother Church). In Syracuse, screenings will be held at the 13th century Castle Maniace; in Palermo, in an 18th century botanical garden.

All four cities will be connected via a live satellite hook-up provided by fest sponsor Videobank for a 45-minute nightly prescreening program featuring noted Italian conductors and talk-show hosts introducing the evening’s films and interacting with special guests in the various locales. In recognition of the expansion, the festival will henceforth be known as the Taormina Film Fest in Sicily.

“It’s totally unique and I expect several important film festival directors to come by and take a look at us, because it’s a model that could be easily exported to places like Brazil,” Young says.

Whether the expansion had any effect on Hollywood’s involvement in the current fest is debatable. This year’s most notable studio entries will be Warner Bros.’ “The Hangover” and New Line Cinema’s “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” which will screen in Palermo as part of the Young American Cinema section. The Hollywood film community will also be represented by actress Jessica Lange, who will be on hand to accept a Taormina Arte Award and introduce her HBO film “Grey Gardens,” and a closing-night screening of a reworked version 1985 historical drama “Revolution” (retitled “Revolution Revisited”), starring Al Pacino and Nastassja Kinski.

That’s better than 2008, when the list was topped by “Street Kings,” starring Keanu Reeves, but not as impressive as 2007, when it had “Transformers,” or in 2000, when Tom Cruise came with “Mission: Impossible II.”

The problem is everyone wants a piece of the Hollywood action, and Taormina is rarely first in line to take its cut.

“We’re competing with some pretty big cities,” Bizio says. “Sometimes we have films that are promised to premiere in London, for example, so we can’t have a premiere right before London.”

Taormina’s wooing of Hollywood hasn’t come at the expense of filmmakers in the region. Since taking the reins at the festival, Young has put an added emphasis on Mediterranean cinema, each year highlighting the works of a different country. This year, France will be feted as a “guest of honor” with a program of contemporary French films. It will also feature tributes to French actresses Catherine Deneuve and Dominique Sanda, who will both receive the Taormina Arte Award at the Gran Gala France on June 19.

Deneuve’s latest film, “The Girl on the Train,” will be screening in competition along with 21 other Italian and international premieres in the three juried sections — Mediterranea, Oltre il Mediterraneo and Sicilian Shorts.

Homegrown filmmakers will be represented in the festival’s business and market section Spazio Taormina, which will unite about 25 producers, distributors, buyers and festival directors from around the world to view the latest in Sicilian audio-visual production in closed-door competitive screenings. The development of up and coming Sicilian talent is promoted through Campus Taormina, which will unite students from the universities of Palermo, Catania and Messina for a series of daily meetings and workshops with established Italian talents in a variety of cinematic fields.

“It’s designed as part of our program to bring young people to the festival, and so far it’s been extremely successful,” Young says. “Last year, Campus had 350 university students from Sicily enrolled. This year, we’re already up to 600.”

More significantly for Taormina, the overall number of films will be increasing, from 30 last year to about 60 this year thanks to the fest’s expansion into other Sicilian towns. Young expects attendance to increase, too.

“Just in the little town of di Montechiaro, we’re expecting 3,000 people every night,” Young notes.

In spite of all this encouraging news, Young still has her work cut out for her. Even a big fan of Taormina like Jewison admits that it wouldn’t be his first choice to launch the international release of a new film.

“I’d head to Toronto, to tell you the truth,” Jewison says.

While Taormina may fall short as a marketplace by Hollywood standards, Bizio insists it’s still a great place to take care of business.

“It’s a really good networking place because it’s so low-key,” Bizio says. “There’s not the usual kind of pressure that sometimes you have in festivals. You have time during the day to enjoy the sea. In the evening, you go for a drink at the Timeo, which is a five-star hotel that overlooks the bay with the volcano in the background. Then everybody goes to the Greek Theater and sees the movie. Afterwards, they go for dinner, and it’s always fantastic food. I mean, what’s there not to like in Taormina?”

Rome’s Tibernia Island Summer Film Festival

Every year between June and September visitors to the ancient city of Rome can break from the crowds to enjoy films on Tiberina an Island near Trastevere at the L’Isola del Cinema film festival. Don’t be surprised if you rub noses with a famous Italian film star, the festival is extremely important to Italian culture but not a pretentious as other film festivals.
The boat-shaped island is the only island in the Tiber River that runs through Rome and has always been associated with medicine. The perfect cure when elbowing your way through the crowds and standing in long lines in the heart of Rome gets the best of you.

The L’Isola del Cinema film festival features new and classic films, workshops, guest appearances, and also a favorite of many festival film goers, the cult classics such as Italian comedies and westerns. Most of the films are dubbed in Italian, but you should have no problem understanding the content or message of the director.

The open air cinema under the stars of the Roman nights is near Ponte Rotto named for its slanting position. The bridge was prone to water damage, and half of it was destroyed by a violent flood in the late 16th century. This is why it is called Ponte Rotto (broken bridge). Today Ponte Rotto can best be seen from the Palatino Bridge, a magnificent sight when the starts light up the evening sky.

After the film, the real festivities begin and the island transforms into an open party. Take a walk along the banks of the river and find the perfect bar or café to enjoy a cocktail or meal. There are also many vendors along the embankment selling gift and souvenir items such as DVDs and photos, and artwork.

After the festival stroll through the Trastevere region of Rome known for its charming cobble-stoned alleyways, quaint piazzas, friendly locals, and excellent Italian restaurants.

Tip: Before the film festival, stop by Santa Maria in Trastevere church. According to legend, on the day Christ was born a stream of pure oil flowed from the earth on the side of the church, signifying the coming of the grace of God. A column next to the altar marks the spot.

How to get to Tiberina Island:

* From Termini Train Station take Bus H.
* From Ostiense Train Station take Bus 23 (CLODIO).
* From Metro A – Ottaviano take Bus 23 (PINCHERLE/PARRAVANO).
* Take Tram 8 to Santa Maria in Trastevere church.

In rural regions of Africa, where a whole village shares one old TV, movies and Public Service media are rare. Open Air Cinema traveled to Africa to bring film entertainment and also educational media to these rural areas.

There are screenings in cinemas all over the city, but the centre of the action is the open air cinema in the Lido area. Held every September, the outdoor movie festival is part of the Venice Biennale, a major biennial exhibition and festival of contemporary art.

The Mostra is made up of four sections: Venezia; Out of Competition; Orizzonti; Corto Cortissimo. They run alongside International Critic’s Week; Venice Days and Film Marketplace. While the Venezia features 20 feature films in competition, the Out of Competition section showcases some of the biggest films of the year. Orizzonti aims to provide a platform for new trends in cinema; the Corto Cortissimo is a competition for short films.

The festival was established in 1932, and even in the prevailing cinematic climate of fascist propaganda films and imitations of Hollywood comedies (“white telephone” comedies, named after that undying symbol of elegance and opulence), it upheld the values of cinema d’auteur, transcending national boundaries.

After the Second World War, the event reflected the new climate of freedom of expression. Cinema makers of the Neo-realist school such as Rossellini and De Sica discovered more direct takes on reality which gave the lie to the glossy artificiality of much Hollywood cinema, opening the way for visionaries like Fellini whilst influencing American film of the 1960s.

In 1952, the characteristic “Leone d’Oro” (Golden Lion) prize was introduced. Recently, a new award has been added, the San Marco Award for the best film in the “controcorrente” section. To this day the Golden Lion remains, along with the Cannes Palme d’Or, one of the few trophies in the film world that comes anywhere near Hollywood’s little golden man, the Oscar. Although the festival has traditionally sponsored non-Hollywood cinema, there has recently been a rapprochement, making this one of the most glamorous end-of-summer venues in the world.

In recent years there has been criticism that the Venice Film Festival has become a launchpad for US films, interspersed with a smattering of secondary Italian movies for political reasons. However, the Italian film producer, Marco Mueller, who runs the festival, defends the strong presence of Hollywood fare in Venice as an attempt to honour America’s unique place in film history:

“Modern cinema was defined by a number of directors working within the Hollywood studio structure, so if modern cinema was born out of Hollywood, then why should we leave it outside the door?” he asks.

Biennale president Davide Croff adds: “The Venice festival has strong roots in its cultural history, and we cannot move away from that mission – but at the same time, there is a certain amount of glamour that is necessary to a festival, so we very much share Marco’s vision. The Hollywood presence is welcome and required to be part of what the film industry can present to the world.”

The place where they showed the movies was near a road they called “Highway 66,” which was heavily traveled by trucks carrying supplies to the front.

“I had seen the movie they were showing one night, so I walked out. About that time, a German Ju88 dove out of the night and strafed the highway,” Kullman said.”I wasn’t anywhere close to the road, but it scared me to death. I had never been under fire before.

“I suppose he saw the lights from the movie and thought there might be a convoy on the road.”

That Kullman had never been under fire is amazing, considering he was usually stationed with 10 to 15 miles of the front in the campaigns from French Morocco, across North Africa and up the Italian boot, helping man the early-warning radar units.

Regardless of such “unwanted attention”, outdoor movies were a popular form of entertainment for soldiers both abroad and at home. Outdoor movie events helped keep up the spirits of the soldiers and remind them of home. Today, many military bases show outdoor movies for soldiers and their families.

The outdoor movie projections start at 9.10 pm and last until full night; open air screenings rise in the Arena “Parco del Poggio” (Hill Park), the fabulous and picturesque site near Capodimonte Area in Naples / Napoli NA Italy.

It’s a special delight in order to enjoy cinema beneath the stars on warm summer nights in an amphiteatre equipped with one of the widest projection screens in Italy which rises having an artificial lake all around. These events really make people revive the movies each night of the Festival!

The admittance price is very cheap: Euro 3.50 per day. In order to see the program go to the official website: http://www.accordiedisaccordi.com
