Free Summer Events on the Hudson

The thermometer is rising and the local towns are inviting residents to enjoy activities throughout the summer months.

Whether singing along to “Mama Mia” in the park, competing in the “Sinatra Idol” contest, or watching open-air Shakespeare, there is something for everyone.

Movies at Pier A Park

Hoboken hosts free movies every Wednesday night in Pier A Park, First Street and Sinatra Drive, by the Hoboken Terminal.

The June schedule includes “Doubt” on June 17 and “Man on Wire” on June 24. July kicks off with “Get Smart” on July 8.

The movies begin at 9 p.m. in June and July and 8:30 in August, according to Hoboken Cultural Affairs Coordinator Geraldine Fallo.

The huge movie screen is set up at the end of Pier A, so movie-goers are treated to New York City skyline views from the grass of the park. Concession stands are on hand and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for their viewing convenience.

Shows will be cancelled due to heavy rain, Fallo said, and the schedule of viewings is subject to change.

Free Outdoor Movies for Kids

Summer is nearly here and that means free outdoor movies for kids! So mark your calendars…

Starting Fridays in June, the Outdoor French Film Festival will be screening several environmental themed movies that are appropriate for children (screenings are in English). Movies start at 8:30pm at Washington Square Park (9th Street Path is closest).

Starting on Fridays in July, RiverFlicks for Kids start at 8:30pm at Pier 46 at Charles St., just off the Christopher Street Path station. Free movie, free popcorn, and beverages and snacks are for sale (getting there before 7pm is highly recommended).

Starting Wednesday in August, Hoboken Movies Under the Stars start at 8:15 pm and feature kids movies. Here is the lineup:

July 10 – Wizard of Oz
July 17 – Kung Fu Panda
July 24 - Ghostbusters
July 31 – Star Wars: The Clone Wars
August 7 - Muppet Movie
August 14 – Madagascar 2

August 26 - Coraline in 3D with free 3D Glasses distributed to the first 1000 people

Hoboken’s “Movies Under the Stars” is back this summer. These FREE outdoor movie screenings take place at Pier A Park, overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Movies begin at 9:00 p.m. in June and July and around at 8:15 p.m. in August, unless otherwise noted below. For the best seating at the outdoor cinema, come early and bring a blanket or comfortable low-back chair.

Here’s the schedule:
June 10 — Frost/Nixon
June 17 — Doubt
June 24 — Man On Wire — Academy Award winner 2008 for Best Documentary; a look at tightrope walker Philippe Petit’s daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York City’s World Trade Center’s twin towers in 1974, what some consider, “the artistic crime of the century.”
July 8 — Get Smart
July 15 — Mamma Mia (sing-a-long version!)
July 22 — The Dark Knight
July 29 — Ironman
August 5 — Kung Fu Panda
August 12 — Horton Hears a Who
August 19 — Madagascar 2
August 26 — Coraline in 3D — free 3D Glasses to the first 1000 people

Schedules are subject to change.
