Greer, South Carolina: Outdoor Movies Return to Greer City Park

Late-night Shock Theater, with all its classic horror and monster movies, will be relived on the big screen at City Park next month with “Thursday Thrillers,” a four-week movie series that ends the night before All Hallows’ Eve with a true cult classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“Fans of these movies have very likely only seen showings in movie theaters or on television. Bringing the thrillers in an open-air venue presents a completely new viewing experience,” said Laurie Campbell, City of Greer events coordinator.

Thursday Thrillers builds on the successful Moonlight Movies summer series, at which crowds topped out at more than 600 viewers in the 500-seat City Park amphitheater, Campbell said.

The Halloween series opens Oct. 8 with “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” the 1956 science-fiction horror film about a small-town doctor who discovers that townspeople are being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates that have killed and disposed of their human victims.

“The Birds,” a classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller, will be shown Oct. 15, followed by a double-feature monster marathon Oct. 22. “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” introduces audiences to a creature lurking in the deep, black waters of the Amazon, while “The Wolf Man” will have viewers wandering the forests of Wales when the full moon rises.

“Twilight Zone: The Movie,” a 1983 film based on tales from Rod Serling’s television series, will be shown Oct. 29. A costume contest will precede the show with prizes for the best dressed.

Concessions and beer sales will begin at 6 p.m., and movies will be shown at 8 p.m.

Thursday Thrillers concludes on a Friday, Oct. 30 to be exact, with a rare outdoor showing of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” restricted those who are 18 years old and older. Viewers will be swept into the bizarre world of Dr. Frank N Furter, the sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.

Concessions and beer sales will begin at 9 p.m. that evening, followed by preshow activities and an 11 p.m. show time.

The time to spread picnic blankets over the soft spring grass at Greer City Park will soon be near with two new programs that will entertain visitors of all ages. Greer citizens will be able to enjoy outdoor movies on an inflatable screen this summer, and live acoustic music will be presented every Wednesday afternoon.

“Lunchtime Live!” features free live acoustic performances from local artists 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. every Wednesday for ten weeks starting April 22. Box lunches from Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce restaurants will be available for purchase, or folks can bring their own picnic lunch, said Laurie Campbell and Karl Rogozenski, event coordinators. They’re hoping the concert series will attract business people and families — anyone who wants to enjoy lunch in a relaxed outdoor environment.

For those looking to enjoy a drive-in movie experience, the “Moonlight Movies” series May 7 to August 20 will offer outdoor films on a giant 20-foot inflatable screen in the middle of the City Park amphitheater.

The “Moonlight Movies” series debuts on May 7 with the first of four classics, “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The events staff has planned such themes as “Western Night,” “Date Night,” and “Musical Night,” before eight consecutive weeks of family films such as “E.T.” and “The Wizard of Oz” dominate the summer months. Additional classics such as “Casablanca” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” will close the series.
