We recently watched The North Face (Nordwand in German), a foreign German film based on the true story of the 1936 attempt to summit the Eiger North Face in the Swiss Alps, and thought we’d pass it along as a great pick for your next backyard movie! The film probably isn’t the best choice if you have small children, but would make a great date night outdoor movie or an opportunity to invite friends over who love foreign or independent films. North Face would look gorgeous on an Open Air Cinema 16′ Pro System with an HD audio-visual package. Here is the theatrical release trailer for North Face:

North Face follows Andreas Hinterstoisser (Florian Lukas) and Toni Kurz (Benno Fürmann), two Bavarian Nazi soldiers who are unsympathetic to the party, and are much more interested in mountain climbing than they are serving the interests of the party. Two other Bavarian climbers, Karl Mehringer and Max Sedlmeyer, attempted to climb the Eiger North Face in the Swiss Alps, the last unconquered challenge of the Alps, but died while attempting to summit. Being billed as an opportunity of national heroism, word quickly spread of Germany’s desire to ascend the North Face before any other nation.

However, Kurz and Hinterstoisser are weary of attempting the climb, as they know of the serious risks that it poses. Yet when the army becomes even less fulfilling, they decide to drop out and attempt the Eiger North Face, also known as the “death wall”. The film follows the duo as they travel to Switzerland by bike, and their attempt to reach the summit. They are not without competition however, as their Austrian counterparts Willy Angerer and Edi Rainer are hoping to declare victory for their homeland. But when events turn the climb into a deathly situation, the four work together to survive.

North Face is a well made film, and will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat! The actors deliver first-rate performances, and show a glimpse into a time of great unrest in Europe. At first we were uneasy of the film, and weren’t sure if it would transcend the vast groups of movies made about the era. But North Faceexceeded all our expectations, and we give it a five-star rating as a potential outdoor-movie!

t’s a great idea that worked out well once in Berlin last night but it will not likely be the start of a new trend  – open air cinema in the middle of the winter.

“Metropolis” is a magical film and well worth shivering along with 2,000 other hard-core fans of the 1927 classic in the middle of a snowstorm last night — an unforgettable experience.

But it’s hard to imagine open-air cinema in February becoming a winter-time rival to the drive-in.

The Berlin Film Festival came up with the splendid venue to give a very large public at large a chance to see the restored version of “Metropolis”, the mother of all sci-fi films that first flopped in 1927 before becoming one of the most famous movies ever made. The trade press has been gushing about the discovery in Argentina in 2008 of 30 minutes of the film that were cut and feared lost for good.

Organisers of the Berlinale gave the world premiere of the restored 83-year-old film the red carpet treatment with a special prime time screening at a sold-out 1,800-seat theatre. Because demand for the tickets greatly outstripped supply, Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick decided to beam a live stream of the screening of  ”Metropolis” and the live orchestra accompanying it simultaneously to a giant 312-metre square outdoor screen set up at the Brandenburg Gate in the heart of Berlin.

The 60th Berlin Film Festival kicks off Thursday with the world premiere of “Apart Together”, a lush period drama from China and one of 20 pictures vying for the coveted Golden Bear top prize.

“Apart Together” director Wang Quan’an, part of China’s so-called sixth generation of film-makers, captured Berlin’s best picture award in 2007 for the unconventional love story “Tuya’s Marriage” set in the grasslands of Mongolia.

Quan’an, 44, will compete with Roman Polanski, Britain’s Michael Winterbottom and rivals from across Asia, Europe and the Americas at cinema’s first major international showcase of the year.

And Martin Scorsese will premiere his latest thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, “Shutter Island” at the Berlinale, albeit out of competition.

A jury led by German director Werner Herzog (“Fitzcarraldo”, “Rescue Dawn”) and including Oscar-winning actress Renee Zellweger will hand out the prizes February 20 before the event wraps up the following day.

“Apart Together” (Tuan Yuan) tells the story of a soldier who fought Mao’s Communist forces until forced to retreat to Taiwan in 1949.

Decades later, the aged veteran returns to Shanghai to find the love of his life and their son. But she has since married an officer in the People’s Liberation Army and is torn between her present and her past.

The picture will screen for the press at 1130 GMT ahead of a gala red-carpet premiere later Thursday with Quan’an and his stars Lisa Lu and Ling Feng.

The selection of “The Ghost Writer”, a new film by Polanski about an embattled former British prime minister based closely on Tony Blair, was the source of some controversy in the run-up to the festival.

The French-Polish film-maker will not be in Berlin as he is under house arrest in Switzerland for charges dating from the 1970s that he had unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. He is awaiting possible extradition to the US.

The movie, based on the Robert Harris bestseller “The Ghost”, had been considered as the Berlinale opener until organisers got cold feet.

“It might have been understood as a statement about something that we didn’t want to get mixed up in,” festival director Dieter Kosslick said.

The Berlin Film Festival, a creation of the Americans during the Cold War in occupied West Berlin, has become a must on the European cinema calendar, ranking second only to Cannes.

It enjoys a reputation for promoting edgy, politically charged fare.

The last Golden Bear winner, “The Milk of Sorrow” about rape victims during the 1980 to 2000 war between the Peruvian army and Shining Path guerrillas, has been nominated for an Oscar for best foreign-language film.

This year’s programme shines the spotlight on Asia in particular.

Japanese master Yoji Yamada, the maker of more than 80 films in his four-decade-long career, will screen his latest picture, “About Her Brother”, out of competition as the last of nearly 400 films at the festival.

Chinese veteran Zhang Yimou, another Golden Bear laureate, will present “A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop” while Koji Wakamatsu of Japan will unveil “Caterpillar”.

And Bollywood heart-throb Shah Rukh Khan is due in town with “My Name is Khan”, a look at the treatment of Muslims around the world in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

This year’s 60th anniversary festival comes as Germany marks 20 years since its reunification. The Berlinale plans to pay tribute to the capital by staging screenings at beloved art-house cinemas throughout the city.

Another highlight will be an open-air projection at the Brandenburg Gate of the 1927 silent German classic “Metropolis” complete with lost footage unearthed in Argentina two years ago.

This February sees Berlin beautifying itself with an abandon that can only be described as unabashed. And understandably so as the city continues to give that last-minute touch to preparations for the 60th anniversary celebrations of Berlinale, the world’s most beloved festival of films.

Festival Director Dieter Kosslick promises to put the public centrestage. This year the city itself is transformed into one big playground in the hope of inspiring the imagination of audiences to run as wild as the artist.

Apart from the screening of more than 400 films, visitors will engage in The Curtain, an art installation unveiled in the heart of the city. The Curtain is a concept of Christina Kim, a Korean American artist who creates a 300-square meter symbolic curtain from recycled film, billboards and other film-related material. When the dynamic curtain dances in the wind, it is expected to reflect splinters of sunlight into surprise shapes. At night, the same surface vows to mirror a totally different tone of tales. The opening of The Curtain on February 12 will be followed by an open-air screening of Metropolis, the 1927 classic at the Brandenburg Gate.

To watch the restored version of Metropolis, a futuristic science fiction silent film will also pay homage to Berlin in the era of the golden 1920s when the city was at its creative best. Before fascism put an end to the party, Berlin was home to the performances of Marlene Dietrich, Bertolt Brecht and inspired The Berlin Stories that went to create Cabaret, the 1972 Hollywood unforgettable, starring Liza Minelli.

Parade of the Stars, an exhibition of star portraits, is not confined to a venue but splashed around town in city light poster display cabinets. The large format portraits of stars, including Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet and George Clooney, among others, are selected from the work of Berlinale’s own lensman, Gerhard Kassner.

Without doubt, Venice is the oldest, Edinburgh the longest, Cannes the most glamorous – but the Berlinale tops the list of film festivals that is the most audience-friendly. This festival opens its arms out widest to visitors; last year there were nearly 5,00,000 participants.
Launched in 1951 to provide entertainment to American soldiers occupying parts of the city after World War II and in an effort to revive the beauty and excitement of Berlin of the golden 1920s, Rebecca, Alfred Hitchcock’s psycho thriller from 1940, was chosen to inaugurate the first Berlinale. Joan Fontaine, the star of the film, was the main attraction. Soon, Berlinale blossomed into an event that was feted for ardent and genuine admirers and promotion of world cinema and fresh talent.

Satyajit Ray was on the jury in 1961. In 1973, his Ashani Sanket came home with the Golden Bear, the top prize of the festival.
Kosslick is the director since 2001 and now the backbone of the festival. Without discriminating between politics and entertainment, Kosslick has seduced politicians, businessmen and big name directors to look at the world through the eye of the artiste. With the goodwill and patronage that he has earned, Kosslick has added exciting activities to the festival like the World Cinema Fund and the Talent Campus that serve young filmmakers, particularly from developing countries.

Rezwan Shahriar Sumit, a Dacca filmmaker, was one of those rare participants from Bangladesh in 2008. Invited by the Berlinale Talent Campus with a short film called Citylife, Rezwan cites the time spent in Berlin as one of the most exciting in his life. In the forum Berlinale Flashback, open to participants to recall their memory, Rezwan says that he experienced an authentic sense of freedom after having submitted his film to the Berlinale.

This birthday special also has European fans of Indian cinema jumping with joy. Apart from the big budget, star-studded and limelight hogging My Name is Khan, the Generation 14 plus competition opens with Dev Benegal’s Road, Movie. Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni’s Vihir is participating together with Laxmikant Shetgaonkar’s The Man Beyond the Bridge that sees its European premiere at the Berlinale Forum.

The parallel cinema classic, Manthan, has made it to the Culinary Cinema section and under the motto In the Food for Love. The Shyam Benegal manna from 1976 completes a menu that promises to be as mouth watering as life itself.

OPEN-AIR-KINO Der Film “Mamma mia” lockt in diesem Jahr wieder zahlreiche Besucher ins Schwimmbad.

Eine Leinwand von sechs Metern Breite und 3,50 Metern Höhe wurde für die Kinoaktion auf der Liegewiese im Bad Sobernheimer Freibad aufgestellt. Bereits im vergangenen Jahr waren zwischen 300 und 400 Besucher gekommen, um sich Til Schweigers Kinofilm “Keinohrhasen” anzusehen, und auch in diesem Jahr wollte man mit “Mamma mia” so viele Zuschauer erreichen. Das Wetter spielte mit und man musste nicht in den Kaisersaal ausweichen.

“Das Interessante ist ja das Open-Air, in stickigen Räumen, da kann man auch ins Kino gehen”, freute sich Besucherin Jutta Scheliga-Landmann. “Solche Events müssten viel mehr gemacht werden, weil das auch den Stadtzusammenhalt fördert, diese städtische Gemeinschaft”, wünschte sie sich. Sie begrüßte die Aktion sehr und stellte auch fest, dass viele aus den Nachbarorten gekommen waren.

Über das Wetter freute sich auch die stellvertretende Leiterin der Verbandsgemeindewerke, Hiltrud Holzem-Vetter, die die Planungen von Vorgänger Marc Lamek übernommen hatte. Es sei ein “relatives Risiko damit verbunden, aber wir haben bisher immer Glück gehabt”, dass das Wetter hielt, betonte Holzem-Vetter erleichtert. Neben der Kirmes sei diese Veranstaltung etwas Besonderes. “Das Ganze soll dazu dienen, das Schwimmbad ein bisschen attraktiver zu machen”, so Holzem-Vetter. Dies sei auch die Intention von Bürgermeister Rolf Kehl.

Im Spaßbecken waren am Kinoabend auch Schwimmreifen anzutreffen, was besonders die jüngeren Besucher freute. Während solcher Veranstaltungen ist es in anderen Schwimmbädern möglich, die Leinwand auch von den Ringen aus zu sehen. Dies war in Bad Sobernheim jedoch nicht umsetzbar. Doch auch so hatten die Jugendlichen Spaß. “Die Ringe sind besser, letztes Jahr hatten wir noch kleinere”, erzählte Konstantin Meissner, der zusammen mit Schulfreund Jan-Luca Bergmann viel Spaß an den Ringen hatte, auch wenn sein Freund betonte: “Ich bin ja eigentlich wegen dem Kinofilm hier.”

Auch die Freundinnen Lea Seiß und Geraldine Buchhorn, die nach den Ferien in die sechste Klasse auf dem Emanuel-Felke-Gymnasium kommen, waren gerne zum Open-Air-Kino gekommen. Für sie war es eine Premiere, im letzten Jahr hatten sie sich den Film nicht angeschaut. “Ich freue mich total, weil der Film auch gut ist”, zeigte sich Geraldine Buchhorn zufrieden. Und Freundin Lea Seiß aus Staudernheim freute sich besonders, weil man während der Kinoaktion ins Wasser durfte. Dass so viele Freunde der beiden gekommen waren, gefiel ihnen auch.

Damit die Aktion überhaupt durchgeführt werden konnte, hatte man die professionelle Firma “Outdoor-Cine” engagiert, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Universal Films häufig solche Veranstaltungen durchführt. Sie brachte das benötigte Equipment mit. Und damit auch alle Zuschauer gut gestärkt zuschauen konnten, übernahm Saunapächter Michael Langelage auch an diesem Abend die Bewirtung.

In einer lauen Sommernacht im Freien sitzen, einen Cocktail in der Hand, und einen Film genießen – das macht das Open-Air-Kino aus. Doch in diesem Sommer müssen die Heidelberger auf den Filmgenuss unter freiem Himmel verzichten. Weil sich kein großer Sponsor fand, sagten die Organisatoren die Veranstaltung ab – zumindest für dieses Jahr.

“Die letzten beiden Jahre waren alles andere als befriedigend”, sagt Ralf Stegmann, der das Open-Air-Kino seit 2007 mit seiner Agentur veranstaltete. Damals übernahm er die Organisation von Heidelbergs “Kino-Königin” Inge Mauerer-Klesel. Doch gleich bei der Premiere spielte das Wetter nicht mit, viele Vorstellungen im Tiergartenschwimmbad fielen aus. Und im letzten Jahr lief es auch nicht gerade blendend. Aber auch wenn Filme gezeigt wurden, war das Publikum zurückhaltend. Das hätte Stegmann nicht gedacht, denn schließlich gibt es in Mannheim seit zwei Jahren kein Freiluftkino mehr. “Die Mannheimer gehen wohl nicht gerne nach Heidelberg”, vermutet er. Trotzdem wollte er mit seinem Team auch 2009 das Open-Air-Kino nach Heidelberg bringen. Doch als Mitte Juni immer noch kein Hauptsponsor gefunden war, zog Stegmann die Reißleine. “Bis zum letzten Moment zu warten, ob sich doch noch ein Unternehmen findet, wäre ein zu großes Risiko gewesen.” Wie so oft sei es die Wirtschaftskrise, die potenzielle Sponsoren Zurückhaltung üben lasse. Die Eichbaum-Brauerei etwa, die das Kino im letzten Jahr noch unterstützt hatte, kam in wirtschaftliche Schwierigkeiten und hat ihre Sponsoring-Tätigkeit deutlich zurückgefahren.

Doch Stegmann macht den Open-Air-Kino-Fans Hoffnung auf das nächste Jahr. “Wenn es mit den Sponsoren läuft, sind wir 2010 wieder dabei.” Schließlich sei Heidelberg als Veranstaltungsstadt sehr interessant. Nur mit dem Tiergartenschwimmbad als Standort ist er nicht so zufrieden: “Es ist eben etwas abgelegen. Da fehlt uns die Laufkundschaft, die mittags vorbeifährt, die Werbung sieht und dann abends ins Kino kommt.”

Doch viele andere Optionen gibt es nicht in der Stadt. Die Neckarwiese wäre als Veranstaltungsort überlegenswert, doch die notwendige Logistik würde den finanziellen Rahmen sprengen. “Der Marstallhof wäre auch eine tolle Location”, findet Stegmann. Dort sei es ein leichtes, eine Kasse einzurichten, die Mensa im Zeughaus könnte die Verpflegung der Kinobesucher übernehmen. Er habe auch schon Gespräche mit dem Studentenwerk und der Universität geführt, allerdings ohne Ergebnis. Denn schließlich ist die Essensausgabe auch in den Semesterferien geöffnet, und was geschieht dann mit den Studenten, die zwar etwas essen wollen, aber nicht den Film anschauen?

So wird es wahrscheinlich wieder auf das Tiergartenschwimmbad hinauslaufen. Geplant wird bei Stegmann auf jeden Fall wieder für den Sommer 2010: “Wir geben Heidelberg nicht auf.”

Das war ein Auftakt nach Maß: Gestern begann das alljährliche Filmfestival auf der Esslinger Burg – und die Macher des Kommunalen Kinos konnten sich zum Auftakt entspannt zurücklehnen: Strahlender Sonnenschein hatte schon den ganzen Tag lang Lust auf Kinogenuss unter freiem Himmel gemacht. Entsprechend groß war denn auch am Abend der Andrang im Filmpalast unter dem Sternenzelt.

Präsentiert von der EZ und freundlich unterstützt von der Volksbank Esslingen, Sony Ericsson und der Stadt bietet das Festival zehn Aben-de lang großes Kino im einmaligen Ambiente der Burg – zum Auftakt lief gestern Danny Boons hinreißende Komödie „Willkommen bei den Sch ‘ tis“. Und wie es sich fürs Kino auf der Burg gehört, begann das Programm schon lange vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit mit der Göppinger Coverband Bandbreite, die ihr Publikum mitnahm auf eine musikalische Reise durch die Rock-Historie. Kein Wunder, dass zahlreiche Filmfans den lauen Sommerabend nicht nur zum Kinogucken nutzten.

St. Georgen (fue) Das Open-Air-Kino lockt wieder in den Klosterhof. Am Wochenende wird der Platz in St. Georgens Mitte wieder zum Freiluft-Kino, wenn die Stadt in Zusammenarbeit mit den Kronenlichtspielen Triberg zu drei unterhaltsamen Abenden einlädt, an denen für jedermann etwas geboten wird.

Das Interesse an dem Spektakel ist groß. „Immer wieder fragen mich die Leute danach“, stellt Kinobetreiber Anton Retzbach bei der Vorstellung des Programms fest. Aus diesem Grund lässt er sich auch von den Wetterkapriolen vergangener Jahre nicht davon abbringen. Dennoch steht und fällt natürlich die Veranstaltung mit dem zumindest trockenen Wetter. Ansonsten sind die Besucher ja schon fast auf alles vorbereitet und rücken oft mit Campingstühlen und Decken zu dem Ereignis an, das damit auch so etwas wie Kultcharakter erworben hat.

Den Auftakt macht am Donnerstag, 30. Juli, die französische Komödie „Willkommen bei den Sch’tis“, der erfolgreichste Film aus dem Nachbarland in der jüngsten Vergangenheit. „So eine Komödie kriegen nur die Franzosen hin“, schwärmt Retzbach von dem Film über einen Beamten, der in die französische Provinz verschlagen wird und sich allen Unkenrufen zum Trotz dort alsbald sehr wohl fühlt. Nur seiner daheimgebliebenen Familie jammert er vor, wie schlecht es ihm geht, bis diese ihn besucht….

Dramatisch großes Kino im Stil Hollywoods steht am Freitag auf dem Programm, wenn „Australia“ mit den Weltstars Nicole Kidmann und Hugh Jackmann lockt. Kurz vor Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs übernimmt die englische Aristokratin Lady Sarah Ashley eine Farm in Australien. Über die Runden bringen kann sie sie nur mit Hilfe des raubeinigen Viehtreibers, in den sie sich – wenn wundert es – am Ende verliebt. Als moderne Mixtur aus Romantik, Abenteuer, Action und Drama wurde der Film gefeiert und zum Nationalepos des fünften Kontinents erklärt, der neben den Schauspielern eine Hauptrolle spielt.

Familienkino schließlich zum Schluss am Samstag, 1. August, und damit vielleicht der richtige gemeinsame Start in den Urlaub. „Ice Age 3 – Die Dinosaurier sind los“, heißt es dann im Klosterhof und in diesem Fall sei die Fortsetzung „noch besser und witziger“ als die ersten beiden Filme.

Die Bewirtung übernimmt wieder der Fußballverein, die Filme starten bei ausreichender Dunkelheit.

Wo steht die Leinwand?
Das Open-Air-Kino in Reutlingen findet im Spitalhof statt. Bewirtet werden die Gäste vom Café Nepomuk. Die Stadt Reutlingen setzt als Veranstalter auf heimische Filmproduktionen. Auf große Hollywood-Produktionen wird verzichtet. Stattdessen werden täglich zwischen dem 19. August und dem 2. September unter anderem Werke von Studenten der Filmakademie Ludwigsburg oder von Reutlinger Filmemachern gezeigt. Filmbeginn ist jeweils gegen 21.15 Uhr.

Wo steht die Leinwand?
Romantische Kulisse für das mittlerweile 22. Sommerfilmfestival ist das Areal vor dem Burgschloss. Nach zuletzt etlichen Problemen mit dem Wetter hoffen die Veranstalter vom Stadtmarketingverein Schorndorf Centro und vom Kino Traumpalast, “dass Petrus in diesem Jahr dem Filmfestival wohlgesonnen ist”.

Was kostet der Spaß
500 Plastikstühle mit Rückenlehnen stehen zur Verfügung. Einlass 19.30 Uhr. Filmbeginn 21 Uhr. Eintritt sieben Euro (kein Vorverkauf). Der Film wird bei jedem Wetter gezeigt, Besucher sollen “entsprechenden Regenschutz mitbringen”. Informationen unter Telefon 0 71 81 / 6 05 94 72.

Wo steht die Leinwand?
Der Schauplatz ist unübersehbar. Das Sommernachtskino findet auf dem Schlossberg statt, dem höchsten Punkt der Stadt Herrenberg. Das Auto muss allerdings unten bleiben. An den Kinotagen ist die Zufahrt gesperrt. Zu Fuß gehen ist also angesagt, die Routen führen über die Stiftskirche und vom Wengertweg (Hasenplatz) nach oben. Entlang der Altstadt gibt es etliche Parkplätze, der größte ist beim Nufringer Tor (242). Wenn wider Erwarten alles belegt sein sollte, bietet sich der Stadthallenparkplatz (331) an.

Was kostet der Spaß?
Das Gelände auf dem Schlossbergplateau ist ab 20 Uhr geöffnet und bewirtschaftet. Filmstart ist um 21.45 Uhr. Es gibt 1200 Plätze. Der Eintritt an der Abendkasse kostet sieben Euro, im Vorverkauf bei der Geschäftsstelle Bronntor des “Gäuboten” 6,50 Euro (Telefon: 0 70 32 / 9 52 51 03).
