Cannes 2010 is just around the corner (will happen from 12-23 May), and we are really excited about the the films that will be screened as a part of the official selection. We have seen some really great art-house outdoor movie screenings, and this list will certainly add to the stockhold of amazing films to screen as outdoor movies in 2010. One film that doesn’t qualify as art-house, but is certainly a film that we are excited about for outdoor-movie-potential is Robin Hood by Ridley Scott. With this new film, “Robin Hood” is sure to become a new genre of film all on it’s own, as it adds to the canon of past Robin Hood flicks! The official trailer is below:

Aaron Russo, the producer of films like “Trading Places” and “The Rose,” promotes his new film, “America: From Freedom to Fascism,” which opened Friday, as having had its international premiere before a packed audience “during the Cannes Film Festival.”

The film was not on the program at Cannes, however, not even for screenings made under the festival’s aegis without being in the awards competition. Mr. Russo, the film’s director, writer and producer, just set up an inflatable screen on a beach. Photographs posted at one of Mr. Russo’s Web sites depict an audience of around 50 people spread out on a platform on the sand. The guerrilla cinema screening did get Russo’s film screened in Cannes, though not officially in the film festival. Nonetheless, the outdoor movie successfully gained the desired attention.

At free showings and outdoor film screenings, the film has drawn long lines of people eager to watch a documentary that feeds on the estrangement many Americans feel from their government, especially those who believe they played by the rules and yet see their finances strained or broken. Many of the reviews in major newspapers have accepted as having some factual basis the film’s main contention, that the government illegally extracts income taxes, even though every court that has ever ruled on these issues has upheld the constitutionality of the income tax.

The film’s appeal, Mr. Russo said during a phone interview last week, is not left or right, but concentrated among those who see the United States evolving into a police state ruled by an oligarchy that has tricked Americans into paying taxes.

Not mentioned in the film is that Mr. Russo has more than $2 million of tax liens filed against him by the Internal Revenue Service, California and New York for unpaid federal and state taxes. Mr. Russo declined to discuss the liens, saying they were not relevant to his film.

He’s also an independent film enthusiast, attending or working at several major film festivals annually, including Telluride and Cannes. On his blog (supported by Jeff Potter) you can read about his many cycling adventures worldwide, as well the outdoor movies he encounters on his way. While cycling through Paris, France, he found an outdoor film series featuring classic movies. The following is his account of the outdoor cinema screenings:

I arrived in Paris with hours to spare before the night’s outdoor movie at the park by the Museé de la Musique on the outskirts of the city off Avenue Jean Jaures on the way to the airport and my wild campsite. It wasn’t dark enough at the open air cinema until 10:30 to start the program. The movie was “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” from 2005 starring Johnny Deep. Of the 35 films on the eclectic summer schedule it was the most mainstream and one of only three movies from the last ten years. It wasn’t exactly a classic, as most on the schedule, but I didn’t mind at all watching Tim Burton’s fantasy extravaganza featuring song and dance numbers by Munchkin-type characters wearing suits. The French subtitles increased my vocabulary by a word or two.

George the Cyclist -Photo Credit: Jim Newberry, Chicago Reader

This was the 18th year of these outdoor movies in Paris, but a sign of the times was that for the first time admission was being charged–two euros. The lawn was still as packed as a year ago when I saw Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” before my return to Chicago. The only difference was that there were less than 100 bikes in the valet parking area, compared to a couple hundred last year. Could be more people are locking their bikes to avoid the long wait to get their bike back as the bike appeared to be as popular as a year ago when the much acclaimed rental bike program was inaugurated. There were considerably more available for rent this year, many of the new outlets taking up former car parking. Ben and Jerry’s is the chief sponsor of the outdoor movies. On three Friday nights of triple features they are giving away ice cream. One of the triple features is the Godfather series. Since each is nearly three hours long, the program will barely finish before dawn’s light. A trio of Eastwood pictures is another and three by Almodovar is the third of the Friday triple outdoor film feature.

Thirty-five years ago, French PR specialist Lionel Chouchan was asked by the city to help drum up some business. He came up with the idea of a film festival devoted to American films. The festival would take place along the beaches of Normandy, featuring outdoor movies under the stars.

Today, the Deauville Festival Du Cinema Americain is the laid-back opposite of Cannes, its Mediterranean peer – a reflection of its cooler region. A stroll along the boardwalk is rivaled by the stroll toward the English Channel; at low tide, it takes 20 minutes to walk from the beach to the water. Don’t be surprised to see a festival-goer strolling the sands barefoot.

In attendance this year were Kevin Spacey, Spike Lee, Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris, a bit of a downturn from 2007 when George Clooney and Brad Pitt were wandering the streets. If American cinema doesn’t suit your fancy, Chouchan’s company Public Système Cinéma also runs the Deauville Asian Film Festival in March.

This year, this itinerant and free cinema festival is participating in the European Cultural Season in France and is inviting the public for the first time to discover a dozen or so European capitals.

Famous film directors such as Luigi Comencini, Milos Forman, Pedro Almodovar, Ingmar Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock, etc. will plunge spectators in to the heart of the cities of Rome, Madrid, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna… Not to be missed!

Cinéma au Clair de Lune invites visitors to combine the discovery of Paris with the love of cinema and outdoor movies. For seven years, a venue has been chosen for spectators to come and see it through the eyes of a filmmaker. Free screenings of films are shown, both past and present masterpieces, most of them with Paris featured as the subject or background. And so, if Paris were Europe, each of its districts becomes a European country, like a piece in a puzzle, a mosaic of communities. Held this year under the auspices of the European cultural season, the Forum des images invites us to see Europe by moonlight like a festival of capitals: a programme of travels that explores the territories of our European neighbours, so close yet so far, and which, without leaving Paris, invites us to discover other towns and other cinema.

Programme available online: www.forumdesimages.fr

Every night except Monday, Frenchies and foreigners alike gather at the massive park/ music/ cultural complex La Villette around nightfall (movies start at 10:30 but get there early) to lounge on a manicured lawn that has the cleanliness and consistency of a new shag carpet to watch a movie pertaining to this summer’s theme: Man and Beast. From now to August 13th, classics such as Hitchcock’s The Birds, Truffaut’s L”Enfant Sauvage and Schaffner’s Planet of the Apes with a leathery Charleton Heston are mixed in with more contemporary flicks such as The Life Aquatic, A Fish Called Wanda and Burton’s Batman. A night at La Villette isn’t just a movie; it’s community bonding. The French pique-nique everywhere. Join in with a blanket, a quiche, and a bottle of rosé to enjoy, or, as many do, just some cigarettes and cheap beer. This is how cinema was before screens shrunk enough to fit in your pocket. The whole crowd cheers when the guy finally kisses the girl, and you too can join in the booing when the villain enters.

This year’s theme, Ava, Rita, Gina… Les Stars et Leurs Pygmalions looks at Hollywood’s greatest stars, what it was that made them shine so brightly on the silver screen, and the directors who launched their stellar careers.

The Parc de la Villette was built as an urban renewal project for one of Paris’ more destitute areas, and the modern architecture of its buildings and layout make it an ideal place to relax and watch a couple of your favourite films. These are either shown in “VO” (original language) or dubbed in French.

An annual Parisian summer tradition started this week, the Cinema en
Plein Air, or “Open Air Cinema” festival. For 18 years people have been coming to the La Villette park in the northern nineteenth arrondisement to watch movies projected on a giant inflatable screen every night from mid-July to mid-August. Until this year, it was free.

This year tickets are two euros each, which has raised the ire of moviegoers. At a recent showing of Ninotchka, starring Greta Garbo, people had a mixed reaction about having to pay for tickets. Some said
they expected outdoor festivals to be free, and others remembered previous years with regret. Some wondered if they shouldn’t be paying for movies, though recognizing that two euros is a symbolic
amount.

Adiren Quenette of La Villette says the organisers felt pressured into charging by the Centre national de la cinématographie, the national cinematography centre, which regulates the movie industry in France.

“The CNC asked us to charge, because they considered that it was unfair competition towards the cinemas around the Parc de la Villette,” said Quenette. “They wanted us to charge. Then we could decide the amount of money. They didn’t ask us to give them money. They asked us to charge so that people would not only decide to go see movies because it’s free. It’s a symbolic two euros that was foisted on us by the CNC.”

A spokesperson for the CNC said they had not forced La Villette into anything. Rather, they recently clarified the rules for non-commercial movie festivals, and those that wanted to continue to be free needed to remove their advertising before the screenings.

La Villette continues to have advertising, so the CNC did not allow them to have a free festival.

Quenette says the price is symbolic and doesn’t even cover the extra costs involved, like hiring security and ticket sellers.

Spectators are not the only ones who are unhappy. A community group formed a few weeks ago to fight against the entry fee. Before Ninotchka, four were handing out fliers to people going in, which included the phrase “culture is not a commodity”.

Emmanuel Chanial, who is part of the group, says the problem is with the CNC but rather with the organizers themselves who, he says, did not consult spectators about the issue:

“It is the public that loses out,” he said. “The public was not alerted, and we were told it just was going to be that way.”

What he and his group are calling for is an exception for this year—for the festival to become free again – and then an open, roundtable discussion over the status for next year’s festival.

All of this disagreement, though, is about free festivals causing undue competition for theatres in the neighbourhood. Chanial says it doesn’t actually make a difference.

“When [local theatres] show classic movies, it’s late at night,” he said. “And people don’t picnic.”

Spectators had a similar reaction, saying the outdoor movie experience is a unique one, not to be compared with going to see a movie in a theatre.

The two euros do not seem to have discouraged too many people so far. According to the organizers, opening night drew a crowd of 2,000 people.

The festival runs every night, except Mondays, through 17 August. On the program are three nights of trilogies, where they show three movies from one director all through the night, with breakfast the next morning.

For those used to the festival being free, the two euros is a bit of a disappointment. But for others, two euros might seem like a bargain.
