Whistler, Canada: Outdoor Movies in the Snow at Whistler Film Festival

Outdoor Movies at the Whistler Film Festival in CanadaAfter an exhausting day on the slopes, the only dark venues with obvious appeal are a bar or a bedroom. Yet this industry-focused film festival has been expanding since its launch in 2002: This year Film Festival will feature 92 films, including outdoor movies in the snow. Guests include Donald Sutherland, who will head the jury, as well as Canadian filmmakers Patricia Rozema (I’ve Heard The Mermaids Singing) and Sturla Gunnarson.

The opening film is Michael McGowan’s One Week and the closing title is Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool.

The snow hits the celluloid at a celebrity ski challenge on Dec. 6. But don’t look for Rozema on the slopes; she says her specialty is luge.

Dec. 4-7; packages including two nights’ accommodation and two festival passes are $119 to $420, double occupancy. Filmmaker Forum packages are also available. For more information, visit http://www.whistlerfilmfestival.com.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada: The Calgary International Film Festival Kicks Off With Outdoor Movies in Alberta, Canada

Outdoor Movies at the Calgary International Film Festival, Alberta, CanadaThe International Film Festival kicked off with outdoor movie screenings last Friday, offering students discounted tickets. The CIFF presented Calgarians with a first look at some film producers with an outdoor festival last Thursday on Stephen Avenue downtown. Filmmakers were interviewed on scene for the public to take part in. Programs were also distributed throughout the afternoon in hopes to encourage students and Calgarians to attend.

Jacqueline Dupuis, executive director of the CIFF, is pleased with this year’s outdoor movie festival. Information about the festival is free of charge, as well as complimentary coffee provided by Starbucks and other giveaways from sponsors such as American Express and Volkswagen.

“Our goal is to create … a niche focus for the festival so that we can start to differentiate ourselves from the festivals across , but also around the world,” said Dupuis. “I think we’ve got a real opportunity to create a destination film festival for Calgary.” Their new addition of outdoor movies is just one way the festival is working toward differentiating themselves.

Students are encouraged to attend the films and learn something about the cultures around the world. Discounted tickets are provided for students at the Fido Box Office located in Eau Claire downtown Calgary.

“It’s a great place to learn to be inspired,” said Dupuis. “We scour the globe for the best films for [the Calgary] audience.” With over 100 films premiering at the film festival from countries such as , , Canada, and , the CIFF brings many diverse cultures to the city. Icelandic film producer Ragnar Bragason, who has two films in the CIFF, would like students to attend the festival for a new experience.

“I think it’s important to broaden their horizon instead of going to American Hollywood [films] which is kind of pushed down your throat everyday,” said Bragason.

He believes that young people are surprised when seeing independent films that deal with everyday life, instead of Hollywood films that deal with society’s heightened reality. “Cinema is a reflection of life,” said Bragason insisting that many American Hollywood films are not an accurate portrayal of real life.

The Icelandic producer has two films premiering at the CIFF. “Parents” premiered on Friday, Sept. 19 and “Children” on Saturday, Sept. 20, and they deal with the circumstances between higher and lower classes in Iceland.

Students who wish to attend the film festival can check out “Confessions of a Porn Addict” starring Spencer Rice, who is one of the stars of the popular comedy television show “Kenny vs. Spenny”. Showing Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Plaza Theatre in Kensington at 9:15 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 25 at Westhills theatre at 9:15 p.m. students are welcome to attend. The outdoor movies as well are expected to be a big draw for the student crowd.

Canada’s third largest film festival, the CIFF requires at least 40 staff and over 400 volunteers to make the festival a success.

Starting Friday night and running through to Sunday, the festival offers movie premieres, galas, parties, outdoor movie screenings and many other events for those who wish to attend. Tickets can be purchased online at www.calgaryfilm.com or at the Fido box office in Eau Claire Market downtown Calgary.

Community Comes Together with an Inflatable Screen to Show Movies Under the Stars in Toronto, Canada

Outdoor Movies at Kipling Plaza in Toronto, CanadaKipling Plaza is set to transform its entire parking lot into a drive-in theater for a family friendly event next weekend.

John Delguidice, store manager of the Giant Tiger store at 2141 Kipling Ave., said plaza management has shelled out $2,000 to rent a 25-foot inflatable movie screen for a community viewing of a top-secret kids release that is not yet out on DVD.

“We’re not supposed to tell anyone what the movie is, but I can give you a hint: if you like Pandas and you like martial arts, you’ll like this movie,” he said with a laugh, noting that the movie will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Planned in partnership between Kipling Plaza, Giant Tiger, and the nearby Salvation Army and Fire Department Station 415, the event is being billed as a community-builder and aims to become an annual event, Delguidice said. The Salvation Army band will play until the movie begins and firefighters will be on hand to collect toy and food donations in lieu of an admission fee.

“We’re looking to change the face of the community; to bring kids out to a fun event so that instead of breaking windows, playing with guns and doing drugs, they can do something more productive,” he said, noting organizers expect anywhere between 200 to 1,000 people to show up. “This is a low income neighborhood, and for the price of a can of beans, families can come out and watch a movie with their neighbors. It’s a good fit for the community.”

The entire parking lot will be closed to vehicles for the event, but the Salvation Army lot across the street will be open for those opting to drive, Delguidice added.

Giant Tiger will also be handing out free giveaways (glow chains, etc.) to the kids. Neighbors wishing to attend are advised to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

“We wanted to make this an adventurous event; to pull the community together for a fun night and also support a good cause,” Delguidice said. “It’s a total win-win situation all around, and we hope people take advantage and come out.”

Port Alberni, British Columbia: Outdoor Movie Nights in Port Alberni

Outdoor Movies in Port Alberni, British ColumbiaThere’s something about watching a movie at a drive-in – the crackly feel of the grass below the big screen where kids romp before the previews; the smell of salty popcorn drenched in butter; freshly-bathed kids in jammies preparing to hunker down in the back seat of the minivan to watch the evening’s offering.

Alas, doesn’t have a drive-in theatre anymore – in fact, there are precious few of them left in the province.

That, however, is a minor point for Karen Freethy and other members of Port Alberni’s Parks and Recreation Department.

On Thursday, Aug. 21, Parks and Rec is going to be bringing the drive-in experience to Port Alberni.

A movie supply company will bring in a movie-theatre-sized inflatable screen and its own projection and sound systems to play a movie.

The whole idea began when Freethy was on a family holiday in Hawaii six years ago.

“My husband and I…were walking along Waikiki Beach and came upon a large screen and vendors selling popcorn,” she says.

She thought it would be a great idea to bring back to Port Alberni.

She searched for a supplier for a few months, but had no success finding one and the idea died.

A few months ago though, she was contacted by a company that had been running outdoor movies in other Island communities.

She quickly approached several community sponsors to help bring the theatre here.

“We have our Our Town events…it’s along the same lines,” Freethy said.

“It’s a great way for families to get out together.”

The screen will be set up inside the running track, closest to the AV Multiplex.

People are free to sit in the grandstands at Bob Dailey Stadium, or set up lawn chairs or blankets on the grass inside the oval.

Freethy anticipates 600 to 700 people to show up at the movie, but says she wouldn’t be surprised if there were more.

Powell River, for example, drew 2,500 to an outdoor movie held last year in that community.

The movie will be suitable for all ages. Unfortunately, due to strict rules from the movie company, Freethy is not permitted to release information about what movie will be showing.

Events kick off at 7 p.m. with a concession, bouncy tent and other kid-oriented events.

The movie starts at dusk, around 8:45 p.m. and will run for about 90 minutes.

Parks and Rec will provide popcorn, candy, chips, etc. The Shriners will have a concession stand with hotdogs, drinks and other items.

Admission is free. The event will be held according to the weather.

Tsawwassen, British Columbia: Outdoor Movies Auctions Harrison Ford Items

A little bit of Hollywood will be up for bids prior to the Aug. 2 Outdoor Movie Night in .

Thanks to some local connections, a movie poster and DVD autographed by Harrison Ford will be auctioned with the proceeds going to the Earthwise Gardens’ Eco Tours.

“We have an autographed poster from the current Indiana Jones movie (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and an autographed Raiders of the Lost Ark DVD on their way from L.A.,” said Ana Arciniega, executive director of the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association BIA’s executive director. “Tsawwassen has six degrees of separation with Hollywood as we know from the Cars movie experience.”

Cars was the first of three outdoor movies the TBIA is showing this summer. Its screening was made possible by the help of Tsawwassen residents Jack and Steve McQueen. Their son Glenn was involved with digital movie producers Pixar and worked on several landmark movies such as Cars, Toy Story and Finding Nemo, which was dedicated in his memory after he died of cancer in late 2002.

The Aug. 2 outdoor movie night at Winskill Park features Ford in his first turn at the role of Indiana Jones.

Promotional rules prevent titles for free outdoor movie screenings to be published.

Arcineiga said the local connection and the driving force for securing the items autographed by Ford is owed to Franco and Heide Amurri from Tsawwassen. Franco is a movie director and Heide is a writer and they have temporarily made Tsawwassen their headquarters.

“The Amurri’s are simply wonderful,” Arciniega said. “They are extremely generous people and love to help in any way they can.”

Getting Ford to sign the items was quite a coup since he is known to be quite private and does not readily autograph items.

But the combination of the Amurri’s Hollywood connection and the fundraising effort for a cause that is among Ford’s interests tipped the scales.

“Harrison Ford likes to support conservation projects and this Earthwise Gardens’ Eco Tours) is a grass roots program, so it was a perfect fit,” Arciniega said.

The Earthwise program is a hands-on environmental education program for school aged children in the areas of habitat and water conservation, pollution prevention and climate change.

The details on how the items will be offered to the public are being determined this weekend. For information please visit the TBIA website at www.shoptsawwassen.com” www.shoptsawwassen.com.

Victoria, British Columbia: Outdoor Movies Makes a Comeback

Dining alfresco has long been one of the pleasures of summer in the city, but moonlit patios and terraces aren’t the only places to enjoy culture or cuisine in the great outdoors this season.

With the demise of the drive-in, moviegoing alfresco has become the rage this summer.

Outdoor options began with the wildly successful Mayfair Drive-In which transformed the Mayfair Shopping Centre’s parking lot into a drive-in for three consecutive Wednesdays in July. If you missed that flashback, no worries. There are more opportunities to watch outdoor movies elsewhere for little or no cost.

Next Friday marks the start of the eighth annual Free-B Film Festival, with a series of family-friendly popcorn classics to be screened for free throughout August at Beacon Hill Park’s Cameron Bandshell. They include Labyrinth, Teenagers From Outer Space, The Princess Bride, Forbidden Planet, The Goonies and the Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello classic Bikini Beach.

A series of themed outdoor movie nights — part of arts entrepreneur Alec Wheeler’s Showcase in the Square series at Market Square — continues Aug. 10 with Casablanca and Aug. 24 with a screening of Grease.

It premiered June 29 with Hook, to coincide with the Tall Ships Festival, followed by an “’80s night” July 13 that featured Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. (Trivia: Former prime minister Brian Mulroney once told me that was his and Mila’s favourite movie.)

“We’re almost seeing a renaissance of outside theatres,” said Ken Kelly, manager of the Downtown Business Association. “People enjoy the common experience, if you will, and the excitement and fun of sharing a movie is never replaced, whether it’s in a theatre or the open air.”

Still to come is Cinema Under the Stars, Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s outdoor movie fundraiser (for the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation) on Aug. 22 at Centennial Park in Central Saanich. Admission is by donation to the revival of a 1981 Hollywood blockbuster about the escapades of a certain fedora-wearing adventurer.

“It brings the community together,” executive director Eileen Leddy said.

The retro charity event, sponsored by Peninsula Co-Op, will be preceded by an old-fashioned country fair.

A classic success story was the Mayfair Drive-In.

More than 450 cars cruised in for the first Wednesday’s showing of Grease, with other patrons parking nearby and bringing lawn chairs. Although the film didn’t unspool until 10 p.m., the crowd started showing up at 4:30 p.m.

“We shut down four city blocks. It was a zoo. We weren’t ready for that,” marketing executive Karina Perkins recalled. “The chaos of that first week was unfortunate, but we sorted things out.”

She said the first three Wednesdays in August have been booked for next year’s event “because it will be darker earlier.”

The Victoria Film Festival’s Free-B showcase is one of the most popular outdoor events.

“It’s fun and it brings people out,” programmer Donovan Aikman said.

These days, many movies are shown on large inflatable screens rented by companies that specialize in outdoor movies. (In the U.S., Open Air Cinema manufactures screen packages for sale to consumers such as the CineBox Home, a backyard theatre kit that includes a 10 or 12 foot movie screen, DVD player, sound mixer and digital projector.)

Aikman attributed the Free-B Festival’s success to its fun factor, free admission and creative programming.

“We focus on finding the unusual,” he said, noting the fantasy Labyrinth, starring David Bowie and a young Jennifer Connelly and featuring creatures from Jim Henson’s Muppet Workshop, hasn’t been available for public screenings until now.

Both The Goonies and The Princess Bride were booked, he says, because they have such a cult following.

“A lot of the B movies we show aren’t chosen because they’re so bad they’re laughable,” he said. “We go for something where there’s a level of art. Forbidden Planet has similarities to Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Teenagers From Outer Space is like a cheesy sci-fi Rebel Without a Cause. The Goonies has great art direction.”

For her Market Square films, Wheeler is inviting moviegoers to dress up in movie-themed costumes. Admission is by donation, with proceeds going to Artists Scene in Action, a non-profit arts society.

Vancouver, Canada: Vancouver Enjoys Opening Ceremony of Beijing Olympics on Inflatable Movie Screen

Beijing Olympic Opening Ceremony on Inflatable Movie ScreenMore than a thousand people gathered at Richmond’s Aberdeen Mall this morning to watch the Opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games – and eat pancakes.

As the ceremonies began and the mall doors opened, hundreds of people rushed from the parkade to catch the event on a giant inflatable TV screen.

Cheers and clapping came from enthusiastic locals as the Chinese flag was carried across the Birds Nest Stadium, as the ten volunteers tasked with preparing a pancake breakfast looked entirely spooked by the size of the crowd.

Richmond Councilor Bill McNulty said, “I’m pretty sure there will not be enough pancakes for the crowd,” as he poured batter furiously.

McNulty said the event, which included nearly 300 volunteers, was the perfect opportunity for the city and local corporations to mobilize for the Winter Olympics in 2010.

“Children are coming out, families. This shows us what we can do,” he said.

Mandy Lee, a spectator, wasn’t looking forward to starting a long day of work at 9a.m., but the accountant says that it was worth it to be around other Chinese people for the Opening Ceremony.

“It was great and amazing. I didn’t expect such a good performance,” she said, adding, “This community is great. They share in everything.”

Dave Semple, Director of Public Works for City of Richmond has lived in Richmond his whole life and says he loves all the changes that have happened over the years.

Semple, a 2010 Olympic volunteer, said events like this help integrate the city’s large Asian population into the rest of the community.

“There are so many events going on all the time. I’ve developed relationships with lots of cool people.”

Helen Fung moved to Richmond 10 years ago from and was surprised to see the mixed crowd.

“There’s not only Chinese people but many Caucasians,” she said.

With the athletes making their way around the track to introductions in English and Cantonese, the crowd chowed down on their pancakes as dozens left for work. The majority of the crowd, however, would be sticking it out to the end, and happily so.
