Crocodile Dundee, is the next film on the Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time . This movie is a great pick for your next outdoor movie or backyard cinema screening, but before we get into any details, here’s the theatrical release trailer for the film:

Crocodile Dundee begins with Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), a Newsweek Reporter, who is on a search for the legendary man of the outback Micheal J. “Crocodile” Dundee (Paul Hogan). She has heard a number of fantastic stories about “Mick”, but soon finds out that many of them are exaggerated tall tales. However, Mick is afforded several opportunities to show off his outback skills, and saves Sue from a close encounter with a crocodile. As she wraps up her story, she invites Mick back to New York City, and he decides to go with her. He is soon in a a foreign landscape, and he awkwardly (and comically) shows his naiveté in relation to modern life when he asks his African American taxi driver what tribe he is from, washes his clothes in a bath, among several other hilarious experiences. The movie is a great comedy that will entertain the entire community, as well as bring back a bit of nostalgia from the mid 80′s.

The most important reason why this film deserves a spot on our Top 25 Outdoor Movies of All Time list is because this film is loved by so many people, that it is sure to be a success in every community. In fact, the movie was created at a budget of under $10 million, because it was only meant for American audiences, but it quickly became a worldwide phenomenon- and ultimately became the highest grossing box-office movie in 1986! Make sure however, to keep your audience in mind with Crocodile Dundee.

The film is not for young children, and is rated PG-13 for several suggestive scenes, and adult humor. It would make a really great pick as a date night or college film, or depending on your community, you may want to screen it to the entire community, but just make sure that your community members understand what their kids will be watching. All in all, Crocodile Dundee is a must for the perfect outdoor movie season.

Has anyone screened this film as an outdoor movie? Email us your story to community@openaircinema.us and we’ll share it on our blog!

Renowned short film festival Flickerfest will end its two month tour at local vineyard Rosnay, with its Best Of Australian Shorts Programme.

The Best of Australian Shorts Programme features recent multi-award winning Franswa Sharl, Oscar® nominated Miracle Fish, and crowd-pleaser Celestial Avenue, winner of the Flickerfest Madman Award for Best Australian Short Film.

Sam Statham, Rosnay, pointed out this is a chance to see an Oscar nominated Australia film, literally in a local backyard.

Miracle Fish has its own miracle – local boy William Ward, of the Ward family at nearby Swinging Bridge vineyard, worked on its sound production.

One of the highlights screening on Saturday night, Franswa Sharl, won a top prize at the Berlinale – the Crystal Bear for the Best Short Film, continuing it’s runaway success after winning the IF Media Award for most Popular Film at Flickerfest 2010.

Other highlights screening in this programme include Celestial Avenue – winner of the Madman Award for Best Australian Short Film at Flickerfest 2010, and IF Award-winning Ralph, directed by much loved Australian actress Deborah Mailman.

The movie program will screen under the stars on the front garden of Rosnay. Movie goers can either BYO picnic on the ground, or share an organic lamb curry.

The event is being screened by Pics in the Sticks, on their big outdoor inflatable screen which will hang from a large gum perfectly located on the edge of the lawn.

At a committee meeting on Tuesday, councillors backed a proposal for an outdoor cinema on the grassed area of the Old Mandurah Yacht Club in Halls Head.

Consultation with local residents will be sought before a decision is made.

Other venues considered were Hall Park, Rushton Park, Mandurah High School oval and the Peel Education Campus oval.

The yacht club location was chosen for its good grassed areas, parking and that it would provide a unique experience.

Movies by Burswood are proposing to run the cinema in spring 2010 and summer 2011 for an 84-day season from December 16 to March 12, 2011.

The cost to set up and run the cinema would be $100,000 and Movies by Burswood would run new release films after they have finished at Reading Cinemas.

Movies by Burswood would be responsible for all operating costs.

The Rosnay stop is part of a Flickerfest tour of 23 venues around Australia, and is a result of Rosnay securing the title of official wine supplier to the Bondi festival.

Flickerfest director, Bronwyn Kidd, said the festival is actively sourcing green and organic for all of its supplies, hence Rosnay’s appeal.

“For the last 19 years, Flickerfest has been a showcase of the inspirational and provocative Australian short film genre, and this year the organic wines and juices served in all of our bars will be a perfect match,” Ms Kidd said.

“We can’t wait to pop a cork of Rosnay’s delicious organic bubbly on the closing night.”

Rosnay wines are being served throughout the Festival at Bondi and on the National Tour, and now, at the home of the wines themselves.

Sam Statham, Rosnay, stressed Flickerfest is not two weeks of foreign language films.

It is one night of Australia’s leading short films that are the pick of the crop and specially curated for the Flickerfest national tour, appealing to all people who just like a good movie.

The films include Miracle Fish, recently nominated for an Academy award and Ralph, directed by Debboral Mailman, of Secret Life of Us fame.

“It’s a great event and the first time it’s been held out here and we are very excited,” Sam said.

“The event is being screened by Pics in the Sticks, on their big outdoor inflatable screen and we reckon we can easily fit 200 people on the front lawn at Richard and Florence’s house.

Instead of sheep, the preserved shearing shed will play host to a flock of film buffs, while the natural surroundings make for the perfect outdoor cinema.

“The ampitheatre is basically a beautiful undulating hill that looks down to the homestead,” Geordie says.

As a way of showing support to the film community, the festival will offer prizes to film makers.

The festival’s main prize is Roy’s Film, (named after the family’s rooster), and encourages locals to submit a film under 30-minutes long.

“We want it to re-tell or to be based on a local story,” Geordie says.

After working on the festival for six months without payment, Geordie and Pascal would love to see profits from their first year. However, the money generated from the festival will be re-invested into next year’s event.

“But you can’t put a price on community, can you?” Geordie says.

This $400 million movie has been chosen to close the open air cinema at Centennial Park’s Belvedere Amphitheatre, off Oxford Street.

There is no better location to experience the magic of Avatar than under the stars as the film delivers a harmonious balance between fantasy, social commentary, romance, action and state of the art CGI technology.

Avatar is an experience not to be missed as it is lifted to even greater heights against the lush outdoor backdrop.

Set in a distant future where humans have pillaged the Earth and are now turning to other planets to bolster their supply of natural resources, James Cameron’s Avatar transports us to the savagely beautiful planet of Pandora.

In an attempt to build a more harmonious relationship with the native Navi, Jake Scully (Sam Worthington) is recruited to remotely operate a human-Navi hybrid avatar.

But as Jake grows closer to the natives he was ordered to infiltrate, his loyalties become tested as the threat of war between the two groups escalates.

So this year, Blaylock has introduced a new late-night venue: SoCo Cargo, a 2am venue built from shipping containers. Blaylock, in fact, discussed the possibility of bringing the Famous Spiegeltent to Darwin, but decided it was too European (and too costly to freight). SoCo has been a hit, with more than 1000 patrons on each of its two first nights.

So who, so far, is the festival’s most popular artist? Believe it or not, Bizet. On Thursday night, OzOpera’s Carmen, which will play to 1000 people this Saturday night, became the festival’s first sell-out event. Does that make Blaylock rethink his approach? “No no, not in the least. Without those two elements (indigenous and Asian) being really strong, the rest won’t feature,” he says.

“You can’t build a festival around one performance of the opera, but you can build a really strong festival around those two concepts. That’s what the place is about and unless you reflect that, it ain’t gonna work.”

Blaylock is the former artistic director of the St Kilda Festival and St Kilda Film Festival. So his Darwin Festival also features, not surprisingly, an outdoor cinema. On Saturday night, the Deckchair Cinema offered the world premiere of the new feature thriller shot in the Top End, Rogue, about a giant crocodile (and featuring a promo shot of big teeth yawning up from the deep towards unsuspecting legs that was more than a little reminiscent of that of Jaws).

A large tourist contingent — about a quarter of the 59,000-plus attendees — comprise festival audiences, keeping the city air thick with an exotic mix of accents, many European; cashed-up retirees, families and thriftier young backpackers.

There’s no better venue in Sydney to show overseas guests than the St George open air cinema at Mrs Macquarie’s chair in the Botanic gardens. As you enjoy a glass of wine and some food with friends , there is simply no better experience in Sydney. Open Air started way back in 1997 after Swiss Founder Peter Hürlimann who staged the first event in Lake Zurich which attracted 50,000 people. Since 1998 Rob Bryant [MD] of St George Open Air Cinema has been running the event and key it its success is “keeping it fresh” Bryant says.

After a trip to Australia Hürlimann decided the obvious location was having the screen in the water and the seating in the Botanic Gardens. Despite being told it couldn’t be done, Open Air is now a must every year for Sydneysiders. Leo Schofield was one of the key people instrumental in getting the Open Air in its current location today.

Hürlimann background in hydraulics is evident from the incredible screen that rises up from the water for the film, but it’s the hydraulics that helps dampen the effects of wind on the screen.

The it’s not about going to see a film at Open Air said Rob Bryant ,” it’s all about the event of being there with friends and the hours before hand enjoying an incredible backdrop with a wine and good company ,the film is the bonus.”

Its been a hard slog since Bryant first season in 1998 when 38,000 people came to watch films, when the schedule included couple of Independent Art House films to today where the location is a must for any new film premiers.

The operation is extremely capital expensive with investment of $2.5 million each year including the screens being shipped from Zurich, the platform erected in the harbour and the grandstands being erected over the Park.

“It was very tough in the first few years” said Bryant “and most of our sponsors have been with us since the beginning which is great and they have enjoyed the journey and exposure that has come with that.” Bryant said 2004 was the tipping point for the business in terms of ticket sales and film companies getting on board with film premiers.

Keeping it fresh every year is the biggest challenge that Bryant enjoys and he is determined to keep the event not to becoming the same old same old. The audience is 25-45 year old professionals and the movies that do best aren’t the old classics anymore its I want a new release and I want to say “I was there”

So what makes this place so special? Bryant says “it really gives you aspect of Sydney” meeting friends and looking over to many iconic views that make say I’m making the most of summer in Sydney. You need distance to get perspective, and sitting with 1800 other people gives it an atmosphere like no other cimena.”

“Things just happen at Open Air that make you feel grounded and proud to be an Aussie” said Bryant. “We were showing Master and Commander and we get a call that Peter Weir [Director]would like to come along and bring some cast and crew as a thank you to them. When I spotted Peter he was four deep at the bar waiting to buy a beer for his friends like anyone else, despite winning BAFTA the night before.” Bryant said “after some prompting from Gail Kelly, Peter Weir introduces the film the unsuspecting audience, which a memory they will remember forever.”

Next step is the United States where Bryant has the rights and plans to bring the Open Air format to Denver and San Deigo and would love to have an Open Air in New York one day.

If ticket sales are a measure of success each year the tickets sell out faster, this year the event was sold out in 12 hours.

StreetCorner
