Rosslyn Park, in Arlington, Virginia screens classic and other older films that everyone can enjoy, such as Karate Kid, Top Gun, ET, and more. The outdoor films are screened each Friday until Sept. 4. The screenings have been officially dubbed the “I Love the 80′s” film series as all the films are from that decade. The screenings are just two blocks from the Rosslyn Metro and parking is available across the street from Gateway Park at the Atlantic Parking Garage for $3 at 1901 and 1911 N. Ft. Myer Drive after 6 pm. Enter the garage on N. Moore Street. Movies show rain or shine, except in the case of extreme weather when they will be shown indoors at the former Newseum space in Rosslyn at 1101 Wilson Blvd. We all know that 80′s movies are everybody’s favorite, so don’t miss these great outdoor movie screenings. Bring friends, family, and neighbors to see your favorite movies under the stars. Click here to read a first-hand account of the Karate Kid screening at Rosslyn Park.

Now that the decade has been deemed nostalgia, ’80s film festivals are catching on. AFI has one coming later this summer, but in the meantime, enjoy the I (Heart) the ’80s Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival every Friday at dusk through Labor Day. (Leg warmers not required, unless there’s a cold snap.) The outdoor movies are screened in a public space, so expect teen comedies such as “Meatballs” (Aug. 28) and blockbusters like “Footloose” (June 26).

Aside from their popcorn value (it’s BYOP), it’s possible to enjoy these outdoor films as cultural touchstones, particularly now that the John Hughes/Gen-X crowd is approaching middle age. Instead of goodbye, “Big Chill,” hello, “Breakfast Club” (June 12) it’s goodbye, “Sixteen Candles” (May 22), hello, “Superbad.”

Not that the boomers are forgotten in these films: Most of “Back to the Future” (July 17) takes place in 1955, and the musical highlight of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (Sept. 4) is the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout.” Also expect fashion atrocities, cheesy synth music and pre-show ’80s-themed games.

The “I <3 the 80s” Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival celebrates a variety of 80s cinema including adventure, romance, comedy, sci-fi and even fantasy. Highlights include The Breakfast Club, Back to the Future, Dirty Dancing, E.T., Ghostbusters, The Goonies, and many more.

The outdoor movie festival returns to beautiful Gateway Park at Lee Highway near Key Bridge with an even larger outdoor movie screen every Friday night at dusk beginning May 1 and ending September 4. People are encouraged to bring blankets and low chairs to picnic in the park before the show. Show up early for the pre-show 80s-themed games and prizes. The movies play rain or shine, but in extreme weather will be shown at an indoor location for the comfort of our moviegoers.

The “I <3 the 80s” Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival builds on the success of the Rosslyn James Bond Film Festival which attracted more than 5,000 attendees during its 16-week run last year,” says Cecilia Cassidy, Executive Director of the Rosslyn BID.

The 2009 outdoor cinema season will begin with the Spider-Man trilogy followed by movies featuring the Hulk, Superman, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and culminate with the Batman movies, including the last year’s blockbuster hit, Batman: The Dark Knight.

Crystal Screen can be seen every Monday evening at sundown starting May 4, 2009 through September 21, 2009 in the courtyard along S. Bell Street between 18th and 20th Streets, across from Arena Stage and the Crystal City Metro Station. Free garage parking is also available at designated Crystal City garages after 4:00 PM. Movies are held rain or shine, except in cases of severe, inclement weather.

Other NOVA BID’s are also in on the movie night thing, I’m personally planning on being a regular at the Friday night Rosslyn BID’s I Love the 80’s movie nights.
